Photoluminescent liquid crystals (PLLCs) have attracted significant attention owing to their broad applicability in thermosensing and PL switching. Extensive efforts have been made to develop bistolane-based PLLCs containing flexible units at both molecular terminals, and it has been revealed that their PL behavior can switch with the phase transition between the crystalline and LC phases. Although slight modulation of the flexible unit structure dramatically alters the LC and PL behaviors, few studies into the modification of the flexible units have been conducted. With the aim of achieving dynamic changes in their physical behaviors, we developed a family of bistolane derivatives containing a simple alkyl or a fluoroalkyl flexible chain and carried out a detailed systematic evaluation of their physical behaviors. Bistolanes containing a simple alkyl chain showed a nematic LC phase, whereas switching the flexible chain in the bistolane to a fluoroalkyl moiety significantly altered the LC phase to generate a smectic phase. The fluoroalkyl-containing bistolanes displayed a stronger deep blue PL than their corresponding non-fluorinated counterparts, even in the crystalline phase, which was attributed to the construction of rigid molecular aggregates through intermolecular F···H and F···F interactions to suppress non-radiative deactivation.

AbstractSuperconductivity is significantly enhanced in monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO3, but not for multilayer films, in which large strength of nematicity develops. However, the link between the high-transition temperature superconductivity in monolayer and the correlation related nematicity in multilayer FeSe films is not well understood. Here, we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to study few-layer FeSe thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We observe an incommensurate long-range smectic phase, which solely appears in bilayer FeSe films. The smectic order still locally exists and gradually fades away with increasing film thickness, while it suddenly vanishes in monolayer FeSe, indicative of an abrupt smectic phase transition. Surface alkali-metal doping can suppress the smectic phase and induce high-Tc superconductivity in bilayer FeSe. Our observations provide evidence that the monolayer FeSe is in close proximity to the smectic phase, and its superconductivity is likely enhanced by this electronic instability as well.

AbstractIonic liquids crystals belong to a special class of ionic liquids that exhibit thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior. Recently, dicationic ionic liquid crystals have been reported with a cation containing two single-charged ions covalently linked by a spacer. In ionic liquid crystals, electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions in ionic sublayer and van der Waals interaction in hydrophobic domains are the main forces contributing to the mesophase stabilization and determining the molecular orientational order and conformation. How these properties in dicationic materials are compared to those in conventional monocationic analogs? We address this question using a combination of advanced NMR methods and DFT analysis. Dicationic salt 3,3′-(1,6-hexanediyl)bis(1-dodecylimidazolium)dibromide was studied. Local bond order parameters of flexible alkyl side chains, linker chain, and alignment of rigid polar groups were analyzed. The dynamic spacer effectively “decouples” the motion of two ionic moieties. Hence, local order and alignment in dicationic mesophase were similar to those in analogous single-chain monocationic salts. Bond order parameters in the side chains in the dicationic smectic phase were found consistently lower compared to double-chain monocationic analogs, suggesting decreasing contribution of van der Waals forces. Overall dication reorientation in the smectic phase was characterized by low values of orientational order parameter S. With increased interaction energy in the polar domain the layered structure is stabilized despite less ordered dications. The results emphasized the trends in the orientational order in ionic liquid crystals and contributed to a better understanding of interparticle interactions driving smectic assembly in this and analogous ionic mesogens.

In sulfur containing liquid crystal dimers we find that at the transition to the NTB phase the positional correlation length drops. The nanoscale periodicity was also observed in the upper range of a smectic phase that forms below the NTB state.
