The National Mission on Oilseed and Oil Palm (NMOOP) in India aims to increase oilseed and oil palm production and productivity by converting fallow lands to oilseed cropsand diversifying regions away from low-yielding cereals. It plans to improve vegetable oilavailability and reduce edible oil imports by increasing oilseed production and productivityfrom 29.79 million tons and 1122 kg/ha in the 12th plan period to 36.10 million tons and1290 kg/ha by the end of 2019-20. The study, aimed to explore respondents’ opinionstowards groundnut cultivation was conducted on 80 beneficiary farmers of NMOOP and80 non-beneficiaries. Groundnut growers, accounting for 11.24 percent, had a less favorableattitude toward groundnut cultivation whereas, 69.38 per cent of respondents fell into themoderately favorable category. It was noted that the both category of respondents hadfavorable attitude towards the interventions of groundnut cultivation.

Pakistan imports edible oil to meet the national demands posing burden on national exchequer. She is trying to grow edible oil crops to overcome this expense. Area under Sunflower cultivation is continuously increasing in Pakistan. But, insect pest infestation is a major concern for the growers. There is a need to develop hybrids which are less susceptible to the insect pests. Present study was conducted to find the most less susceptible Sunflower hybrids. Promising sunflower hybrids were grown and relevant data were recorded. All the hybrids were found moderately resistant to Resistant. This response is subject to the availability of insect population in the field and environment plays an integral role in it. There is dire need to explore the potential further of these hybrids. Keywords: Sunflower, Hybrid, Screening, Whitefly, Jassid, capitulum borer

There is an increasing interest of food scientists in finding new alternatives to PUFA rich edible oil. Perilla seed oil (CPSO), an underutilized oilseed, can be used as an edible oil source. Oil extracted by the cold-pressed method from perilla seeds gives a yield of 36.50%. This study reports the physicochemical properties, the oxidative and thermal stability of the cold-pressed perilla seed oil. The viscosity, specific gravity, refractive index, and smoke point of CPSO were 28 m.Pa.s, 0.92, 1.43, and 241 ℃, respectively. The peroxide, acid, iodine, saponification value, and unsaponified matter of CPSO were 4.81 meq O2/kg oil, 1.61 g KOH/kg oil, 132 g KOH/kg oil, 180 g I2/kg oil, and 0.64%, respectively. It consists of high α -linolenic acid (55.80% of total oil) followed by oleic acid (20.54%). The extracted oil is analyzed for its thermal stability (peroxide value, free fatty acids, p- anisidine value, totox value, and total polar compounds) and storage stability for 120 days in two different storage conditions (refrigerated and room temperature). Despite having high nutritional benefits, the oil stability index (0.50 h) of the perilla seed oil is low, limiting its utilization as a frying oil. Therefore, perilla seed oil requires process optimization to increase its stability during heating.

Phenolic compounds from mango (M. indica) seed kernels (MSK) var. Sugar were obtained using supercritical CO2 and EtOH as an extraction solvent. For this purpose, a central composite design was carried out to evaluate the effect of extraction pressure (11–21 MPa), temperature (40–60 °C), and co-solvent contribution (5–15% w/w EtOH) on (i) extraction yield, (ii) oxidative stability (OS) of sunflower edible oil (SEO) with added extract using the Rancimat method, (iii) total phenolics content, (iv) total flavonoids content, and (v) DPPH radical assay. The most influential variable of the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) process was the concentration of the co-solvent. The best OS of SEO was reached with the extract obtained at 21.0 MPa, 60 °C and 15% EtOH. Under these conditions, the extract increased the OS of SEO by up to 6.1 ± 0.2 h (OS of SEO without antioxidant, Control, was 3.5 h). The composition of the extract influenced the oxidative stability of the sunflower edible oil. By SFE it was possible to obtain extracts from mango seed kernels (MSK) var. Sugar that transfer OS to the SEO. These promissory extracts could be applied to foods and other products.

Moringa [Moringa oleifera (Lam.) Moringaceae] is a fast growing, deciduous, drought tolerant and tropical perennial tree. Moringa oleifera is called as a “Miracle Tree” due to not only its nutritional and pharmacological properties but also utilized as biofuel, water purifier and cosmetic industry. Every part of Moringa oleifera is a storehouse of essential nutrients. Edible parts of the plant includes the whole leaves, immature green fruits or seed pods, flowers and roots. Mature seeds yield 38-40 per cent edible oil called ben oil. Cosmetics such as anti-ageing creams, hair care products, face creams, aromatherapy oils and massage oils use moringa oil. Fresh Moringa leaves was collected from Department of vegetable science, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur. The KAU Moringa variety Anupama was selected for the study during the period of 2018-2020. Moringa is indeed a miracle tree with enormous potential which is yet to be explored for therapeutic and commercial applications.

Abstract Composites of a biodegradable thermoplastic aliphatic polyester, polybutylene succinate (PBS), with bentonite were investigated for morphological and mechanical properties. The bentonite was modified with soybean oil (SBO) and lard oil (LO) (2:98 clay:oil % by weight) by mechanical stirring and ultrasonication. The PBS/modified bentonite composite was prepared by using an internal mixer and processed by compression molding. Under bentonite modification conditions, XRD and SEM showed that the bentonite layers were broken into small layers, and the d-spacing between the layers was increased by edible oil molecules. A small plate like structure of modified bentonite composite was observed by SEM micrograph, which revealed short and long layer silicate structure non-directionally throughout the matrix phase. The mechanical properties of PBS were reinforced by this structure. The tensile modulus and elongation at break seem to depend on its directional bentonite. Interestingly, considerable improvement in impact strength was observed at over 2 wt% of clay. The impact strengths of PBS, PBS/modified BTN with SBO composite, and PBS/modified BTN with LO composite were increased from 1 to 1.5 and 2 kJ/m2, respectively. Comparatively, using LO modified bentonite had a better performance for increased interlayer and resulted in higher impact strength of the composite than that of SBO composite. The results demonstrated that PBS/modified bentonite using edible oil could be a potential alternative low cost, eco-friendly material with superior impact properties useful for further applications.
