This study aimed to compare four standard deviational ellipse models to assess directional behavior and player activity area in four small-sided games (SSG) of soccer played on pitches with the same width (40 m) and different lengths (30, 40, 50, and 60 m). Fourteen participants played four 7-a-side SSGs on each of the four pitch sizes. Based on GPS data, four ellipse models were calculated for each outfield player and pitch size: major ranges (MR) measuring standard deviation in fixed length and width directions, linear regression assuming length (LR LvsW) or width (LR WvsL) as the independent variable, and principal component analysis (PCA) assuming both length and width as independent variables. Slope, area, semi-major and semi-minor axes, and eccentricity were calculated for each ellipse model. The PCA and LR LvsW models showed similar and valid results for each variable, especially for larger pitch sizes. LR WvsL showed unreliable results. The length axis should be considered as the independent axis when assessing the main direction of players’ movements and playing area through a standard deviational ellipse in soccer. This methodology could also be applied to evaluate a team’s labor distribution and spatial distribution of its players.

This study describes spatiotemporal distribution and geospatial diffusion patterns of dengue outbreak of 2013 in Jhapa district, Nepal. Laboratory-confirmed dengue cases were collected from the District Public Health Office, Government of Nepal. Choropleth mapping technique, Global Moran’s Index, SaTScan, and standard deviational ellipse were used to map and quantify the outbreak dynamics. The results revealed heterogeneous distribution and globally autocorrelated patterns. Local clusters were observed in 3 major urban centers. The standard deviational ellipse demonstrated the outbreak occurred from the east and diffused to the west along the east-west highway in different weeks. The results of this study could be useful to public health authorities to plan and execute dengue control strategies.

Analysing spatiotemporal distribution patterns and its dynamics of different industries can help us learn the macro-level developing trends of those industries, and in turn provides references for industrial spatial planning. However, the analysis process is challenging task which requires an easy-to-understand information presentation mechanism and a powerful computational technology to support the visual analytics of big data on the fly. Due to this reason, this research proposes a web-based framework to enable such a visual analytics requirement. The framework uses standard deviational ellipse (SDE) and shifting route of gravity centers to show the spatial distribution and yearly developing trends of different enterprise types according to their industry categories. The calculation of gravity centers and ellipses is paralleled using Apache Spark to accelerate the processing. In the experiments, we use the enterprise registration dataset in Mainland China from year 1960 to 2015 that contains fine-grain location information (i.e., coordinates of each individual enterprise) to demonstrate the feasibility of this framework. The experiment result shows that the developed visual analytics method is helpful to understand the multi-level patterns and developing trends of different industries in China. Moreover, the proposed framework can be used to analyse any nature and social spatiotemporal point process with large data volume, such as crime and disease.

The study was conducted within the actual area of Lutoviska commune in Bieszczady district, Podkarpackie voivodeship in Eastern Poland. The dynamics of settlements in Lutoviska commune from the 2nd half of the 18th century was discussed. Maps and historical data were analyzed in the ArcGIS 10.3 program. In the study there were presented possibilities of applying the ArcGIS for Desktop 10.3 program. We analyzed the Lutoviska commune in terms of the changes of settlements and used maps for the analysis of changes in its structure. The first of these was the historical map, namely the tactical map of “WIG” in scale 1:100 000 from 1936. Next we analyzed maps from 1965 and 2014, which were prepared applying the “WMS” server. The changes in the number of villages and households were presented. Population dynamics for Greek-Catholics, “Latynnykys” and Jews for the year 1785 and Ukrainians in comparison with the number of Poles and Jews for the year 1939 were shown. Ethnic and religious composition from the 2nd half of the 18th century was evaluated. Based on the study of spatial placement of settlements with the use of Spatial Statistics (Spatial Autocorrelation Global Moran’s test, Standard Deviational Ellipse and Mean Centre) the character of settlements distribution in Lutoviska commune was presented. There was confirmed a similar configuration of Standard Deviation Ellipse and Mean Center for Greek-Catholics-Ukrainians in 1785 and Ukrainians in 1939 in Lutoviska commune. The scale and results of such changes are interesting for future research, mainly in terms of the change of traditional village system infrastructure and culture.
