Echoing Canada's historical treatment of immigrants, the post- 9/11 era has brought terrorism and national security issues to the forefront of the political agenda by dividing immigrants based on race, colour, religion and country of origin (Kruger, Mulder and Korenic, 2004). The research critically examines the major security legislation employed by the Canadian government since the events of September 11, 2001, in order to highlight the impact on marginalized communitites, in particular "Muslims" and "Arabs". The paper will examine through key informant interviews, the affect the new security agenda has had on targeted individuals and on the advocacy efforts of social movements and social activists. The paper takes the position that this new era of national security undertaken by the state has resulted in a two-tiered justice system, where certain groups are now being targeted by government and security agencies, while there is an erosion of democratic rights of all Canadians.

Reporting on Race in a Digital Era, by Carolyn Nielsen. Cham, Switzerland: Palgrave Macmillan. xiii, 236 pages. ISBN 978-3-030-35220-2/ISBN 978-3-030-35221-9 (eBook) CAROLYN NIELSEN has proposed a role for journalism in resolving political oppression, offering a case study on the crisis surrounding street killings of African Americans by police. This United States journalism academic provides a review of prominent work since the 1970s on journalism theory and principles. She gives an historical treatment of news media coverage in race relations and criticises ‘traditional’ journalism—as a central point kicking into the corpse of ‘objectivity’ as a key value. This is late, with objectivity and a moral neutrality, as the adopted trait of journalists, already forsaken.

Today it is generally accepted that a child is an actively self-determining subject in human culture, and not an object of pedagogical influences. At the same time, the tendency that the development of a infants, toddlers and preschoolers children is a controlled and effective process is becoming more clear. This gives relevance to search and analyze various methods that make possible to determine the standart criteria for the development of a child at various stages of his childhood. Purpose. This work analyzes and compares four different approaches that differentially assess the development of a preschooler. The approaches are studied in the context of the compliance of the child’s normative characteristics with modern requirements for the content of preschool education and the realistic implementation of the methodology in mass pedagogical practice. Methodology and research methods. The research, was based on the principles of the cultural-historical treatment, the theory of activity and the principles of individualization of preschool education. The empirical part of the research is based on descriptive statistics of a survey of 25,462 teachers (upbringers) from 77 regions of the Russian Federation. Results. On the basis of the analysis of the approaches, the authors conclude that the «development maps» by N.А. Korotkova is the most appropriate method for observing the development of the children. In «development maps» the child is assessed on the basis of the level of initiative in the implementation of cultural practices typical of childhood - play, productive and cognitive-research activities and communication with peers implemented against their background. The chosen methodology is subjected to empirical verification for compliance with one of the most important criteria for practical implementation – availability for use without special training of teachers. Conclusion. “Development maps” can be used to solve a number of urgent problems: individualization of preschool education; fair assessment of the work of teachers; involving the parents of children in the educational process; building continuity between kindergarten and primary school.

Edmund T. Whittaker’s second edition of his A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity is famous for his treatment of Einstein as an almost irrelevant character in the emergence of what he called “the relativity theory of Poincaré and Lorentz.” Historians of science have given a number of explanations, which include Whittaker’s scientific conservatism as an old classical physicist, his commitment to the ether, the pre-eminent role he attributed to mathematics over physics, and foundational philosophical disagreements, to name a few. And in the background, often more implicit than forthright, the accusation of antisemitism looms over Whittaker. In this paper I intend to shed new light on this controversy by taking into consideration the abundant correspondence between Whittaker and his son preserved in the archives of the Fisher Library, University of Toronto. With it, we will get a more complex and personal view of the context in which his attempt at dethroning Einstein took place. Together with the abovementioned reasons, this correspondence shows that the problematic status quo of general relativity in the early 1950s, a period that has been described as the low-mark of general relativity, was very influential in the historical treatment he gave to Einstein. This is an aspect hardly mentioned in the historical work on this controversy and, from this correspondence, it appears to be central to understanding Whittaker at the time of drafting the new History. His possible antisemitic bias will also be addressed, though with the insufficient information on this subject the matter cannot be settled.

India bears the highest burden of global dog-mediated human rabies deaths. Despite this, rabies is not notifiable in India and continues to be underprioritised in public health discussions. This review examines the historical treatment of rabies in British India, a disease which has received relatively less attention in the literature on Indian medical history. Human and animal rabies was widespread in British India, and treatment of bite victims imposed a major financial burden on the colonial Government of India. It subsequently became a driver of Pasteurism in India and globally and a key component of British colonial scientific enterprise. Efforts to combat rabies led to the establishment of a wide network of research institutes in India and important breakthroughs in development of rabies vaccines. As a result of these efforts, rabies no longer posed a significant threat to the British, and it declined in administrative and public health priorities in India towards the end of colonial rule—a decline that has yet to be reversed in modern-day India. The review also highlights features of the administrative, scientific and societal approaches to dealing with this disease in British India that persist to this day.

AbstractThe analysis of physics textbooks focused on basic education has been a research subject for decades, relying on several methodological approaches and focused on various specific contents present in such books. In line with this research tradition and provided with five evaluation criteria developed by us, in this article we present the analysis of four collections approved by PNLD 2018, concerning the historical treatment contained in such collections in the presentation of the topic 'speed of light', which consists of an important section of the history of classical optics that runs through 20th century physics and its epistemological developments in the wave-particle duality of light. We emphasize that, far from exhausting such cut, we hope that our contribution can strengthen future Physics textbooks, providing a less illustrative and eurocentric story, as well as more contextualized and motivating. Keywords: History of light velocity; Classical optics; Textbooks.
