The human locus FNDC5 rs16835198 contributes positively to anthropometric phenotypes in children and adolescents. However, the role of specific components of physical fitness in this relationship is not known. The present study aimed to verify the moderator role of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and muscular strength in the relationship between rs16835198 polymorphism FNDC5 and adiposity in children and adolescents. This cross-sectional study was carried out by genotyping the rs16835198 FNDC5 polymorphism in 1701 children and adolescents (mean age 11.73 ± 2.75 years). Obesity was assessed using waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) z-scores. To evaluate CRF and muscular strength, the 6 min run/walk test and lower limb strength (LLS) were used. Linear regression models were applied, and all analyses were adjusted for age, sex, skin color, living area, and school type. A significant interaction term for CRF (p = 0.038) and LLS (p = 0.040) × rs16835198 FNDC5 with WC was identified. Regarding BMI, a significant interaction term for CRF (p = 0.007) and LLS (p = 0.044) × rs16835198 FNDC5 was observed. Moreover, medium and high CRF and LLS levels protected against higher WC and BMI. In conclusion, adiposity levels of children and adolescents with a genetic predisposition to obesity might be modified by improving CRF and muscular strength.

This study examined branch diameter, number of whorls, and number of branches in the lower 2 m of the stems of white spruce growing in pure stands and in mixture with a range of densities of trembling aspen. Data were collected from two study sites located north of Big River Saskatchewan, which were regenerated following clearcutting in 1992 and thinned in 1996 to five aspen densities and two spruce densities. Results show significant decreases in spruce diameter at breast height (DBH), height, live crown ratio, maximum branch diameter in the lower 2 m, average branch diameter in the whorl closest to 1 m, and increases in tree slenderness with increases in aspen density. Increasing spruce density reduced the number of live branches and number of live branch whorls in the lower 2 m. Maximum branch diameter in the whorl closest to 1 m was influenced by both aspen and spruce density, with a significant interaction term resulting from effects of intraspecific competition being evident for aspen densities of 1500 stems ha−1 or lower. DBH and slenderness explained more than 49% of the variation in spruce crown width, maximum branch diameter in the lower 2 m, maximum live branch diameter in the whorl closest to 1 m, and average live branch diameter in the whorl closest to 1 m. DBH explained more variation in crown width and branch diameter than slenderness. This study demonstrates that growing spruce in mixture with aspen can lead to reductions in branch size and that early thinning to low aspen densities could lead to increases in size of knots and associated reductions in wood quality, particularly when spruce densities are low.

Abstract The objective of this study was to establish the relationships between when a cow was born within the calving season and the performance of her offspring. Data from the Virginia Department of Corrections beef cattle herds were collated for 7 locations over 7 years (2010 to 2017), with 2 calving seasons per year. Data from Spring of 2011 were missing. The full dataset contained 19,253 individual animal observations. Within each location, year, and calving season combination, the calving season was defined as starting when the first calf was born and terminating when the final calf was born. The relative calving date (RCD) within each calving season was defined by calculating the number of days between when the calving occurred and when the calving season started, divided by the length of the season in days. For heifer calves that were retained as replacement heifers (n = 2,800), the RCD and birth weight of their calves were used as response variables of a mixed-effect model with fixed effects of dam RCD, season (fall vs spring), and calf sex. All 2 and 3 way interactions were also included as fixed effects. Both calving year and sire were used as random effects. Fixed effects were iteratively removed from the model when non-significant; however, non-significant linear terms were retained if involved in a significant interaction term. The final calf RCD model included significant effects of dam RCD (P = 0.006), season (P < 0.001), calf sex (P = 0.0737), and the interaction between dam RCD and calf sex (P = 0.055). The final calf birth weight model included only linear terms for calf sex (P < 0.001) and dam RCD (P = 0.029). Least square means for these relationships are depicted in Table 1.

This study examines the associations between four types of peer-reported bullying and peer-reported victimization (mocking, physical bullying, negative gossip, cyberbullying), and students’ ethnicity and academic achievement among sixth-grade Hungarian primary school students. For data analysis, multilevel regression models are used. Based on the analysis of 27 classes, it was found that students’ self-declared ethnicity is not significantly related to bullying and victimization among students with higher socio-economic status. In some models, however, a significant interaction term between ethnicity and low socio-economic status has been found, showing that among low status students, Roma ethnicity is more strongly associated with bullying and victimization than among high status students. Furthermore, there is no sign of the acting white phenomenon among the students in the study in general and among the Roma students in particular. In contrast, students having higher grades are less likely to be nominated as victims of any form of bullying except for mocking.

The objective of this study is to assess the impact of electronic commerce (EC) assurance on earnings forecasts and stock price estimates of financial analysts. The theoretical foundation of the current study is based on the information hypothesis (Fama and Laffer 1971; Wallace 1980), which supports the notion that EC assurance is a means of reducing information asymmetry and uncertainty for financial market participants. In the first phase of this study, a survey of 37 financial analysts indicates the importance of vendor- and outcome-based risk factors when forecasting the financial performance of firms engaged in EC. In the second phase, 87 analysts participate in a 2(high and low vendor-based risk)×2(high and low outcome-based risk) experiment. As hypothesized, EC assurance significantly increases earnings forecasts and stock price estimates in the high-risk, as compared to the low-risk, condition. In addition, a significant interaction term is obtained such that EC assurance yields a pronounced impact when both vendor- and outcome-based risks are high. The findings suggest that EC assurance reduces risk for market participants, thereby generating higher expectations of firm performance and value.

The appropriate interpretation of interaction terms in studies employing moderated multiple regression ( MMR) analysis is considered. It is argued that given a theory-based, a priori hypothesis, an MMR analysis is analogous to a planned statistical comparison and, thus, a significant overall F value is not a prerequisite for interpreting a significant interaction term.
