Pasture-based dairy systems rely on the accurate allocation of pasture to both meet livestock requirements and maintain the growth of herbage. Currently, physical fences are used to contain livestock however they can be labor-intensive to shift and maintain. Alternatively, virtual fence (VF) systems offer flexibility and real-time control of livestock location. Pre-commercial neckbands (eShepherd®, Agersens, Melbourne, VIC) emit a warning audio tone (AT) when a cow approaches a VF boundary, paired with an electrical pulse (EP) if the cow continues forward into the exclusion zone (EZ). However, the ability of VF technology to control animal location when pasture is restricted to the previous day's residual, remains unknown. Ten non-lactating Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were trained to use a VF system for 6 days before strip grazing a 1.2 ha paddock of annual ryegrass. Over 10 days the cows grazed eight pasture allocations at a pre-grazing pasture mass of 2,324 ± 81 kg DM/ha (mean ± SE) and post-grazing pasture-mass (post-grazing residual) of 1,649 ± 48 kg/DM/ha with a front VF. The allocations had a physical backing fence that included the fresh allocation and a small area of residual to cater for any GPS drift of the front VF. On each day, with the exception of days 5 and 10, the VF was moved forward, and the cows were provided a new pasture allocation. On days 5 and 10, the VF was not shifted, and cows were only offered the previous allocation's residual pasture. The location of each animal (inclusion, buffer, and exclusion zones) and number of stimuli (AT and EP) delivered were recorded. The number of stimuli delivered between the grazing and hold-off days was similar. Cows spent 89% of time within the inclusion zone (IZ), with significant peaks observed on day 5 and 10. Distance that cows traveled into the EZ reduced across time. There was also evidence of individual variation in the number of stimuli and thus time spent in each zone. Overall, the VF system was successful in containing the dairy cows during strip grazing even when only offered the previous days post-grazing residual.

In the current study, the nozzle clogging behavior and inclusion composition in Al-killed Ca-treated steels were observed to investigate the relationship between the liquid fraction of non-metallic inclusions and the clogging possibility of the submerged entry nozzle. Clogging materials were mainly MgO-Al2O3 with less than 20% liquid phases, while most of the inclusions were full liquid CaO-Al2O3-MgO in tundish at the casting temperature. Thus, it was proposed that the nozzle clogging can be effectively avoided by modification of solid inclusions to partial liquid ones rather than full liquid ones. There was a critical value of liquid fraction of inclusions causing the nozzle clogging. A critical condition of the inclusion attachment on the nozzle wall was a function of cosθN−S+cosθI−S<0. With the increase of T.Ca content in steel, the evolution route of inclusions was solid MgO-Al2O3→liquid CaO-Al2O3-MgO→solid CaS and CaO. To avoid the clogging of the submerged entry nozzle (SEN) under the current casting condition, the appropriate T.Ca concentration range in Al-killed Ca-treated steels can be enlarged from the 100% liquid inclusion zone of 10–14 ppm to the 20% liquid inclusion zone of 4–38 ppm.

The importance of society in shaping spatial order is increasingly emphasized in research as well as in the creation of local politics. Social potential and its importance in development is the subject of research of both sociologists and geographers. The article addresses issues related to the relationship between the level of social potential and the degree of involvement of local communities in development. An analysis of ventures indicated by local communities to solve the diagnosed problems was also conducted. Data was used for municipalities indicated as problem areas and qualified for the so-called Special Inclusion Zone of Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship from revitalization programs. The analysis also used statistical data from the Central Statistical Office to calculate the synthetic indicator of social potential. The results show that in areas with low social potential, residents show more revitalization initiatives, but are limited to infrastructural needs.

Grazing cattle can both negatively and positively impact riparian zones, dependent on controlled grazing management. Virtual fencing technology, using collar devices that operate via GPS can provide audio cues and electrical stimuli to temporarily exclude cattle from specified areas as desired. An early experimental prototype automated virtual fencing system was tested in excluding ten cattle from a riparian zone in Australia. Animals were given free access to an 11.33-hectare area for three weeks, excluded from river access by a virtual fence for ten days (2.86-hectare inclusion zone), followed by free access again for six days. Animals were almost exclusively contained by the virtual fence. All animals received audio cues and electrical stimuli with daily fence interactions, but there was high individual variation with some animals first approaching the fence more often than others. Overall, there was an approximately 25% probability that animals would receive an electrical stimulus following an audio cue. Individual associative learning may have been socially-facilitated by the group’s behaviour. Following fence deactivation, all animals re-entered the previously excluded area. Further research with more groups and longer periods of exclusion using updated collar devices would determine the scope of virtual fencing technology for cattle grazing control.

Point-to-tree distance sampling designs, sometimes also referred to as k-tree sampling or fixed-count sampling, are practical response design options for field sampling in forest inventories and ecological surveys. While practitioners accept and use several approaches to estimate stem density and other stand attributes, a major concern from a statistical point of view is the lack of a general unbiased estimator for this class of sampling strategies. In this paper we analyse point-to-tree distance sampling in the framework of design-based probabilistic sampling and present an unbiased estimator valid for estimation of any stand attribute. This estimator draws upon the idea of defining an inclusion zone around each tree. A tree is taken as a sample tree if a selected sample point falls into its inclusion zone. The size of the inclusion zone is therefore a measure of the individual tree's inclusion probability when sampling is done with random sample points. Once the inclusion probabilities are known for all sampled trees, the Horwitz-Thompson estimator can be used as an unbiased estimator for any stand variable. In point-to-tree distance sampling, the inclusion zone of a particular tree depends exclusively on the spatial arrangement of the neighbouring trees. Such inclusion zones are determined by k-order Voronoi polygons, where k is the number of trees being sampled per sample point. The approach, however, requires the positions of the k sample trees and a number of surrounding trees to be mapped. Field application is therefore difficult, but a comparison of plot designs by simulation studies in fully mapped stands can now also be done with an unbiased estimator for k-tree sampling.
