A brief encounter with the Maori people during April 1824, inspired Dumont d'Urville to write a novel set in New Zealand. This work is the first novel set in New Zealand and the first fictional treatment of the Maori people, written by someone who had had first hand experience of their country. Les Zélandais Histoire Australienne is a unique combination of fact and fiction and as such has a considerable contribution to make to the history and literature of the Pacific region and of New Zealand in particular. The work was never published and the reasons for this are discussed in the final chapter of the thesis. After an interval of more than one hundred and sixty years spent in obscurity, Les Zélandais Histoire Australienne emerges from this study as a valuable historical and literary document. We have described it as an ethnographic novel with ethno-historical notes. The work is comprised of two sections of equal size and importance. There is the novel and the accompanying notes which cover a wide range of subjects, reflecting Dumont d'Urville's wide ranging interests, including Pacific history, geography, languages and cultures. The Notes are a primary source of information, containing Dumont d'Urville's observations which reappeared in later publications. In addition, the vivid experiences of Burns the stowaway and ex-convict, are invaluable as early eye-witness accounts. This is the first complete transcription of the manuscripts. It was a major undertaking because of the length, age and condition of the manuscripts and the almost illegible handwriting. The exercise is discussed in Chapter I In the literary study, several writers admired by Dumont d'Urville, or by whom he was influenced, are discussed. In the first paragraph of the Story, Dumont d'Urville mentions in particular Fénelon, Florian and Rousseau. We have examined some aspects of their work which are relevant to Les Zélandais Histoire Australienne. There is, for example, a discussion on the opposing view points held by Rousseau and some of the French explorers with regard to the legend of the Noble Savage. In addition, we have chosen two works, Paul et Virginie by Bernardin de Saint Pierre and Atala by Chateaubriand, in order to consider Les Zélandais Histoire Australienne from the point of view of exoticism and poetic prose in French literature. This section concludes with an appreciation of the literary style of the novel, which contrasts with the style of Dumont d'Urville's later popular work, Voyage pittoresque autour du monde. The navigator had an abiding interest in the peoples of the South Pacific. Through les Zélandais Histoire Australienne, Dumont d'Urville communicates the enthusiasm with which he made his contribution to the study of mankind. Others before him had recorded ethnographic information but Dumont d'Urville's concern for the cultural predicament of the Maori people sets this explorer apart. The author of this work is a pioneer in modern anthropology.

Nowadays, we can observe the applications of machine learning in every field, ranging from the quality testing of materials to the building of powerful computer vision tools. One such recent application is the recommendation system, which is a method that suggests products to users based on their preferences. In this paper, our focus is on a specific recommendation system called movie recommendation. Here, we make use of user reviews of movies in order to establish a general outlook about the movie and then use that outlook to recommend that movie to other users. However, a huge number of available reviews has baffled sophisticated review systems. Consequently, there is a need to find a method of extracting meaningful information from the available reviews and use that in classifying a movie review and predicting the sentiment in each one. In a typical scenario, a review can either be positive, negative, or indifferent about a movie. However, the available research articles in the field mainly consider this as a two-class classification problem—positive and negative. The most popular work in this field was performed on Stanford and Rotten Tomatoes datasets, which are somewhat outdated. Our work is based on self-scraped reviews from the IMDB website, and we have annotated the reviews into one of the three classes—positive, negative, and neutral. Our dataset is called JUMRv1—Jadavpur University Movie Recommendation dataset version 1. For the evaluation of JUMRv1, we took an exhaustive approach by testing various combinations of word embeddings, feature selection methods, and classifiers. We also analysed the performance trends, if there were any, and attempted to explain them. Our work sets a benchmark for movie recommendation systems that is based on the newly developed dataset using a three-class sentiment classification.

The article presents a little-known Bulgarian literary work, the play "Balkan Comedy" by Boris Rumenov (Boryu Zevzeka). It was written during the Balkan Wars (1912-1918) and presents the relations between the Balkan states at that time in an allegorical way. The play is the most popular work of Boris Rumenov, who, before and after the wars, was the editor-in-chief of one of the most successful humorous newspapers in Bulgaria called "Drum". He and Stoyan Shakle, one of Rumenov’s closest friends, who wrote for the newspaper, founded a touring theater. They performed all over the country for years and the most popular play was "Balkan Comedy". During the First World War, the play was performed on all fronts of the Bulgarian army, usually by amateur actors, and it generated incredible enthusiasm and patriotic inspiration, thus enjoying a huge success. "Balkan Comedy" was an essential part of the theatrical performances, which also included songs, sketches, recitations and other popular forms of entertainment. As it reflected the actual historical events, the play was presented in its first three acts until 1918, and after the end of the war, the author added a fourth act, which, however, had a different emphasis from the end of the third one.

Azerbaijan became acquainted with opera at the beginning of the twentieth century thanks to the tours organized by Russian and European operas to Baku. The intense admiration of the Azerbaijani people led Azerbaijani composers to produce works in opera style. In that period, Üzeyir Hacıbeyli combined his knowledge of authorship, historiography, scientists, education, journalism and musicians in the art of opera, based on the impact of the strong and aesthetic touch of art on people, and laid the foundations of opera in the East by composing the mugam opera "Leyli and Mecnun". The author’s version of the reason for the intellectual and moral degradation of the personality in general is reduced to the rejection of rationality. In particular - in the rejection of the rationality of Rene Descartes. It is argued that oblivion of the Cartesian attitude towards the obviousness of the idea of perfection to a thinking subject, inevitably leads to the fact of the elimination of representing thinking, and hence consciousness as a genetic and constructive source of values. The consequence, illustration, and at the same time the result and evidence of this oblivion, according to the author, is the popular work of E. Fromm «To have or to be»?

Background. The origin, popularity and importance of high fiction in English literature are directly linked to Tolkien's work. Tolkien’s novels were the reasons for the critical rise of English fiction to some extent. His “Hobbit” achieved great success at that time and it was the most popular work among readers. When L. Baum created examples of the fantasy genre, detailed historical events, settings and landscapes were considered as the part of the such genre. On the contrary, Tolkien, refined and elevated these concepts. Tolkien set out to associate the roots of his ideas, which embodied location and time, in the field of fiction. Methods. In this article there have been drawn some views related to the analysis of stylistic devices in the novel of “Hobbit”.

This short chapter examines Mark Twain’s novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and its relationship to “classical” Arthurian legend. Twain blends time periods in a more sustained way than either T. H. White’s or even Monty Python’s Arthurian world, both of which already are rife with anachronisms and modern intrusions. In “transporting” a contemporary character into ancient Camelot, Twain uses the tale to comment on society and technology in very obvious ways. As an opening prelude to the first section of this book, an examination of Twain’s approach and characterization form a foundation for later retellings. Indeed this overt melding of time periods has made the novel a popular work to adapt.
