Musical Storytelling and Revision in Rodgers and Hart’s A Connecticut Yankee

This short chapter examines Mark Twain’s novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and its relationship to “classical” Arthurian legend. Twain blends time periods in a more sustained way than either T. H. White’s or even Monty Python’s Arthurian world, both of which already are rife with anachronisms and modern intrusions. In “transporting” a contemporary character into ancient Camelot, Twain uses the tale to comment on society and technology in very obvious ways. As an opening prelude to the first section of this book, an examination of Twain’s approach and characterization form a foundation for later retellings. Indeed this overt melding of time periods has made the novel a popular work to adapt.

The Squirrels Dancing is considered a social novel in all its details because their temporal movements and personal relationships vary with them, making them an ideal model for tracking these terms. The study of social expressions in a novel that represents a diverse period to give a clear view of the terms development used in these different time periods, the change of their significance, their discursive requirements, and the depth of social relations according to the terms used in the novel. Accordingly, the novel's enriching with many social terms will identify the research in general human relations and family in particular. From the secondary title of the novel (Tales of the Shahbandar's Grove of Mustafa Khan, from which the memory is not lost), the importance of relations is evident in telling the stories and mentioning the orchard, and that the Shahbandar is one of the well-known and prestigious figures in society. So we find the father, mother, grandfather, friend, and some characters featured in the details of the novel.

Profiling the genetic evolution and dynamic spreading of viruses is a crucial task when responding to epidemic outbreaks. We aim to devise novel ways to model, visualise and analyse the temporal dynamics of epidemic outbreaks in order to help researchers and other people involved in crisis response to make well-informed and targeted decisions about from which geographical locations and time periods more genetic samples may be required to fully understand the outbreak. Our approach relies on the application of Transcendental Information Cascades to a set of temporally ordered nucleotide sequences and we apply it to real-world data that was collected during the currently ongoing outbreak of the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus. We assess information-theoretic and network-theoretic measures that characterise the resulting complex network and suggest touching points and temporal pathways that are of interest for deeper investigation by geneticists and epidemiologists.

Background. The origin, popularity and importance of high fiction in English literature are directly linked to Tolkien's work. Tolkien’s novels were the reasons for the critical rise of English fiction to some extent. His “Hobbit” achieved great success at that time and it was the most popular work among readers. When L. Baum created examples of the fantasy genre, detailed historical events, settings and landscapes were considered as the part of the such genre. On the contrary, Tolkien, refined and elevated these concepts. Tolkien set out to associate the roots of his ideas, which embodied location and time, in the field of fiction. Methods. In this article there have been drawn some views related to the analysis of stylistic devices in the novel of “Hobbit”.

<p>A brief encounter with the Maori people during April 1824, inspired Dumont d'Urville to write a novel set in New Zealand. This work is the first novel set in New Zealand and the first fictional treatment of the Maori people, written by someone who had had first hand experience of their country. Les Zélandais Histoire Australienne is a unique combination of fact and fiction and as such has a considerable contribution to make to the history and literature of the Pacific region and of New Zealand in particular. The work was never published and the reasons for this are discussed in the final chapter of the thesis. After an interval of more than one hundred and sixty years spent in obscurity, Les Zélandais Histoire Australienne emerges from this study as a valuable historical and literary document. We have described it as an ethnographic novel with ethno-historical notes. The work is comprised of two sections of equal size and importance. There is the novel and the accompanying notes which cover a wide range of subjects, reflecting Dumont d'Urville's wide ranging interests, including Pacific history, geography, languages and cultures. The Notes are a primary source of information, containing Dumont d'Urville's observations which reappeared in later publications. In addition, the vivid experiences of Burns the stowaway and ex-convict, are invaluable as early eye-witness accounts. This is the first complete transcription of the manuscripts. It was a major undertaking because of the length, age and condition of the manuscripts and the almost illegible handwriting. The exercise is discussed in Chapter I In the literary study, several writers admired by Dumont d'Urville, or by whom he was influenced, are discussed. In the first paragraph of the Story, Dumont d'Urville mentions in particular Fénelon, Florian and Rousseau. We have examined some aspects of their work which are relevant to Les Zélandais Histoire Australienne. There is, for example, a discussion on the opposing view points held by Rousseau and some of the French explorers with regard to the legend of the Noble Savage. In addition, we have chosen two works, Paul et Virginie by Bernardin de Saint Pierre and Atala by Chateaubriand, in order to consider Les Zélandais Histoire Australienne from the point of view of exoticism and poetic prose in French literature. This section concludes with an appreciation of the literary style of the novel, which contrasts with the style of Dumont d'Urville's later popular work, Voyage pittoresque autour du monde. The navigator had an abiding interest in the peoples of the South Pacific. Through les Zélandais Histoire Australienne, Dumont d'Urville communicates the enthusiasm with which he made his contribution to the study of mankind. Others before him had recorded ethnographic information but Dumont d'Urville's concern for the cultural predicament of the Maori people sets this explorer apart. The author of this work is a pioneer in modern anthropology.</p>

One implication of the results is for translators in the sense that they become aware of the translation strategies used in the Persian translation of the English novel 'Whatever after, Fairest of all' written by 'Sarah Mlynowski'. To be more particular, they become informed of the efficiency of the used strategies and therefore, can decide to use these strategies in their translations or try the other strategies. The other implication is that translation students become familiar with Klingberg‟s model and the strategies proposed in the model and how this model is applied in the Persian translation of the novel 'Whatever after, Fairest of all' written by 'Sarah Mlynowski'. To be more specific, since Klingberg‟s model is a popular and detailed model in the area of translation of children‟s literature, this awareness can help them as future translators in translating children‟s literature. The other implication of the results is that those involved in the industry of children literature take new insights about the strategies used in translation of a popular work of this genre.

In the article, for the first time in the diachronic aspect, the dynamics of the relationship of Ossetian literature with the mythoepic tradition, the degree and nature of its relevance at certain stages of the development of artistic consciousness. The purpose of the work is to study the specifics of the reproduction of the "theme of the Narts" by Ossetian writers, the synthesis of the mythical-epic and individual-author's principles in works of different eras, styles and genre forms. Descriptive-functional and mythopoetic methods were applied with the use of hermeneutic techniques in the analysis of texts on which there were lively discussions. The experience of recreating epic motifs and images in the work of the classic of Ossetian literature K.L. Khetagurov (poems "Vsati", "In the shepherds", "At the cemetery") is reflected. Special emphasis is placed on the reflection of the epic constants of the national world in the literary process of the second half of the twentieth century. New approaches of writers to the understanding of the phenomen that make up a significant layer in the cultural space of the Ossetians (fandyr, Atsamaz's flute, Uatsamonga bowl, Kadag- Saga, etc.) are analyzed. The mythoepic layer in the structure of the modern story is outlined (K. Dzesov, N. Dzhusoyty, G. Agnaev). The characteristic features are highlighted, such as: incorporation of mythological reminiscences into the artistic fabric of works; the character's two-naturedness caused by implicit comparisons (plot-motive and subjective levels); posing and solving in the “Nart spirit” the problem of the righteous and sinful path, the antinomy “life after death” – “death during life”. The next stage in the development of the theme of the Narts (the last third of the XX – the beginning of the XXI century), positioned in the article as the pinnacle of the synthesis of mythical-epic and literary principles, is correlated with the emergence in Ossetian literature of a new genre variety – the novel-myth. It is concluded that the Nartiada is a continuous fundamental source of the development of Ossetian literary literature, despite the heterogeneity of causal relations between the two aesthetic systems in different time periods.

SummaryThe effects of the novel benzimidazole, triclabendazole (TCBZ) (‘Fasinex’, Ciba-Geigy), in its active sulphoxide metabolite form (TCBZ-SX), on the tegumental ultrastructure of Fasciola hepatica were determined in vitro by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), using both intact flukes and tissue-slice material. At a concentration of 15 µ/ml, the tegument of the whole adult fluke showed ultrastructural changes only after prolonged time-periods, with vacuolation at the base of the syncytium and accumulation of T2 secretory bodies in the tegumental cells. At a concentration of 50 µ/ml, with both whole flukes and tissue-slices, the tegument appeared extremely abnormal with accumulation of secretory bodies towards the base of the syncytium. With longer incubation times, the tegument was completely sloughed away and the tegumental cells became synthetically inactive. The tegument of the 3-week-old juvenile became progressively convoluted at the apex, while in the basal regions there was severe vacuolation. In the tegumental cells, there were accumulations of T1 secretory bodies. These results confirm TCBZ as a potent fasciolicide, being very effective in disrupting the fluke tegument. They may go some way to explain the mode of action of this important fasciolicide.

Setting the novel in different time-periods (Rana regime, Panchayat System and Maoist movement), Sheeba Shah’s Facing my Phantoms has depicted the condition of Nepali males and is considered a historical document. This article aims to examine the factors that constrain the male characters to traditional and anti-traditional gender roles. It also studies the consequences faced by the characters while performing and defying gender stereotypes. To address this objective, Butler’s and Connell’s ideas have been used as they have claimed that masculinity and femininity like any other human attributes are fluid; in fact, it is constantly reconstructed in response to socio-political changes under the pressure of social norms. According to Butler, gender is something that is not a corporeal thing, but it is reproducing, changing, and moving. The significance of this article is to find insights in understanding the condition of males in the Nepali society. It concludes that the male characters of Shah’s novel oscillate between traditional and anti-traditional gender roles. Under the social pressure, they perform the roles of an assertive and authoritative father, aggressive and ruthless lover/husband, and rational and responsible son. Likewise, when they get influenced by socio-political changes, they fail to stick to stereotypical gender roles. Consequently, they appear in the emotional, docile, dependent, confused, and unassertive roles.
