This chapter considers some of the essential features of ethnography as a qualitative method. The main theoretical foundations of ethnographic approach are explained; however, the emphasis is mainly on how ethnography is done. Thus, the techniques for collecting data used by ethnographers take the central part of this chapter with some special attention to the methodology of observation. Through many examples, the authors describe the various forms of observation as a social research method. It is useful to illustrate the approach of the ethnographer through the metaphor of the “stranger” because “reflexivity” is an important part of the qualitative approach of ethnography. The practicalities of recording the field research and writing memos are fully considered in conjunction with practical suggestions and conceptual discussion, including the writing up of the final text which should be the conclusion of a consequential process, rather than a separate entity.

Indian democracy was constituted after a long struggle for self- determination, which ultimately culminated in the making of a constitution for independent India. This article seeks to revisit gender discourses during the constituent assembly debates when women members were seeking for complete gender equality to be written into the constitution. The nationalist discourses on ‘Indian womanhood’ prevalent during the years of the freedom struggle were articulated and reflected in the debates and impacted the writing of the text of the constitution. The final text contains gender progressive provisions on which consensus had been achieved during the nationalist struggle but excludes explicit provisions that would have challenged the roots of patriarchal structures. Thus, while the nationalist movement provided a platform for women to organise for their rights, it also constrained the agenda of transformation.

The report examines the peculiarities of bilingualism of the outstanding Russian-American sociologist Pitirim Sorokin (1898–1968) based on his archival working materials from the University of Saskatchewan (Canada). The purpose of the study is to identify and explain the linguistic features of his scientific thinking in connection with the conditions of translinguism. Based on the material of Pitirim Sorokin’s working notes, the features of his work on the creation of the book “Contemporary Sociological Theories” (1928) are considered. Correspondences between the preparatory notes and the final text of the book are established. The specifics of translingual practices in the scientific activity of a scientist are revealed. Archival manuscripts and notes allow you to trace not only the process of changing the language and switching codes. The use of a mixed meta-language by Pitirim Sorokin in the work on the preparatory materials of the book has been established. At the same time, a functional distribution of language codes is revealed. Russian language is a working tool of scientific thinking, planning and management of research activities.

BackgroundPrevious research has outlined transnational tobacco company (TTC) efforts to undermine implementation of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products (Protocol) and evidence of ongoing TTC complicity in the illicit tobacco trade (ITT). However, the industry’s views on the Protocol and role in its development are not well understood.MethodsSystematic searching and analysis of leaked documents—approximately 15 000 from British American Tobacco (BAT) and 35 from Philip Morris International, triangulated via searches of online resources and interviews with five stakeholders across academia, international organisations, governments, civil society and the private sector.FindingsEvidence indicates that after privately viewing the Protocol as a significant threat (2003), BAT worked to influence its content, while publicly signalling support for it (2007–2012), and was largely satisfied with the final text. BAT successfully pushed for a non-prescriptive text which enabled further country-level TTC influence during the Protocol’s implementation phase. The final text also reflected other BAT policy preferences, including preventing outright bans on duty-free sales and intermingling, and making it difficult to sanction and hold tobacco companies accountable for ongoing involvement in the ITT. TTC representatives were present during early Protocol negotiations, despite rules against this, and BAT obtained draft texts before they were public and paid at least one delegate to support its position.ConclusionsBAT’s primary interest in shaping the Protocol was to minimise its financial and legal costs for BAT while maximising potential costs to small competitors. These findings raise concern about the Protocol’s ability to control the ITT, particularly given TTCs’ intention to influence ongoing national implementation. An effective Protocol is vital to controlling both the ITT and ongoing tobacco industry involvement in it and, in turn, governments’ ability to increase tobacco taxes and thereby save lives.

The article analyses the symbolic correspondences between the image of the priest in the epic poems “Who Is Happy in Russia?” by Nikolay Nekrasov and “The Land of the Fathers” by Sergey Gusev-Orenburgsky. The author of the work turns to the process of creating the image of the priest by Nikolay Nekrasov and shows the duality of this figure, which arose due to the fact that at first the poet used to take a dislike to the priest, but gradually Nikolay Nekrasov approached the assessment of the environment precisely from the position of religious consciousness in his best works. In the final text, the poet, as it were, combined two views: the impression of the priest’s well-fed and contented life, expressed by Luka the peasant, and the peculiar ideal of the life of a priest as the spiritual father of the people. Creatively mastering many of Nikolay Nekrasov's finds and achievements, his images of fighters and truth-lovers, at the turn of the 19th century, Sergey Gusev-Orenburgsky created an example of an autobiographical hero breaking with his environment, embodying in the artistic world of the story, but this time in relation to different heroes, the dual assessment of Nikolay Nekrasov’s priests. Following Nikolay Nekrasov, Sergey Gusev-Orenburgsky looked for real figures among the people who acted in accordance with Christian ethics, who could not isolate themselves from the world and who thought about the happiness of the people.

The article considers the role and functions of artistic detail in the contemporary short stories. The investigation involved the flash fiction stories by the American writers written after the year 2020 and several short stories by the outstanding Canadian writer Alice Munro. The aim of the research is determining the major devices of prose poeticalness in these texts and revealing the role of artistic detail in creating poeticalness.Prose poeticalness is defined as such property of a prose text which involves the priority of poetic function and envisages the introduction of poetical features into prose – stylistic convergence, phonetical repetitions, parallelism, rhythm. Stylistic convergence can be considered the most foregrounded device of poeticalness as it involves the accumulation of different stylistic devices which add expressiveness to each other (M.Riffaterre). Our investigation shows that convergences function in strong positions of texts- the initial or final text fragments. Artistic detail is the object or some feature of the object which acquires special importance in the literary text (V.A.Kukharenko). Artistic detail is usually associated with metonymy or synecdoche, but unlike these tropes, it embraces the whole text. In the flash fiction stories and the short stories by A.Munro the major artistic details are objects like a coin (L.Wilson), a brooch (A.Munro), a glove (D.Shea) or a feature of appearance like a bruise (S.Dybek). These details characterize people’s behavior, their dreams and aspirations. Therefore, they symbolize love, friendship, sympathy and give polysemantic character to the narration. Another result of our investigation is determining the metaphoric detail (G.Paley) in the description of the woman, the mother of the defendant. Thus, the emotional effect of the artistic detail is realized in the metaphoric similes comparing the woman to the faded flower. These artistic details in combination with stylistic convergence create the impression of the texts as modern parables. The theoretical novelty of our research lies in the analysis of artistic details from the viewpoint of poeticalnees as well as in revealing the significance of emotional effect for prose poeticalness. The prospects of further research lie in the investigation of poeticalness in other genres of modern prose.

This paper was written in response to a request by the editors of the AP: Online Journal of Public Archaeology, Jaime Almansa Sánchez and Elena Papagiannopoulou, for Claire Smith to write on the future of public archaeology in Australia. In Australia, public archaeology focusses on high profile colonial sites such as The Rocks in Sydney (Karskens 1999) and Port Arthur in Tasmania (Steele et al. 2007; Frew 2012), tourism (e.g. Cole and Wallis 2019) or enhancing school curricula (Nichols et al. 2005; Owens and Steele 2005). However, given her decades-long relationships with Jawoyn and Ngadjuri people (Smith 1999; Smith et al. 2016; Smith et al. 2020), Claire Smith decided that a useful way of approaching this topic would be to obtain Indigenous views on the subject. Accordingly, she contacted the Aboriginal co-authors of this article and invited them to co-author the paper. The possibility to write in free form was a boon. The ‘conversation’ format we settled on was designed to facilitate the voices of individuals, to present a range of Indigenous views, to allow people to express their views frankly, and to deal with the constraints of people being located in different parts of Australia as well as occasional lock-downs due to COVID-19. We decided on five topics/questions that would be the basis of the conversation. Each Aboriginal author gave their views either by email or by phone. These views were interwoven into a ‘conversation’. The language has been edited lightly for clarity and to simulate a real-life conversation. The final text was approved by all authors.

On the basis of the sources, Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann writes the main book of his life - «The Eucharist. The Mystery of the Kingdom». The purpose of the analysis is to trace the change in individual views and judgments of Father Alexander and the history of the formation of the final text of his main theological work. For this, the «Diaries» of Father Alexander and his publications on the pages of the «Bulletin of the Russian Student Christian Movement» were analyzed. These two sources (one personal and the other open) made it possible to imagine how the work on the text of the book was going on, how many of its aspects were rethought and rewritten almost until the last days of the author’s life. Many thoughts on the Eucharist were published by Father Alexander in the «Bulletin». One of the difficult chapters, which Schmemann rewrote many times, was the chapter «The Sacrament of the Holy Spirit». This is largely due to the author’s attempt to consider the problem of East and West, Orthodoxy and Catholicism on the pages of this chapter.

Critical literacy practices have moved their interest from Freirean binary analyses (e.g. oppressor versus oppressed) to more complex perspectives, where in a text the author/speaker is (dis) aligned with different discourse communities. Despite the fact that these teaching practices that are based in multiple discources are gaining attention, little work has been done on the assessment of the teaching practices. During the last decades, the literacy activities researches have focused on the teacher-student interactions and the teacher talks (asking questions, types of questions), neglecting the final text production, which is also a significant factor in the evaluation of literacy practices. In this paper, after the implementation of polyphonic literacy practices in a rural junior high school in Crete, Greece, the teacher-researcher assessed the final student written products using the Appraisal Theory. Further qualitative methodological data gathering sources enhanced the identification of the contextual factors that can explain in depth the discourses the students (re)produced in their texts. These findings suggest that Appraisal Theory combined with such methodological choices, where the context is identified, is more supportive in the evaluation of these complex critical literacy practices and provides the teacher and students fruitful feedback concerning critical literacy awareness.
