Abstract In this paper the influence of the angle between the applied external magnetic field and the mechanical shear direction on the measured elasticity of a magnetorheological (MR) elastomer is addressed. The whole range of magnetic field angles from 0○ to 90○ is analyzed in steps of 5○. Though this dependence is of highest importance for practical applications this issue is rather neglected in previous studies. The work uses MR elastomer specimens based on a silicone rubber matrix containing iron powder in weight fractions of 82 wt.% and 89 wt.%. It has been shown that the measured modulus of elasticity of such composites decreases as the angle between an external magnetic field and applied shear deformation increases. As the framework for the discussion of the findings a macroscopic explanation associated with the magneto-deformation effect as well as an influence of the demagnetizing factor are considered.

Ultrasonic imaging of ferrogels (FGs) filled with magnetic nanoparticles does not reflect the inner structure of FGs due to the small size of particles. To determine whether larger particle size would improve the acoustic properties of FGs, biocompatible hydrogels filled with 100–400 nm iron oxide magnetic sub-microparticles with weight fraction up to 23.3% were synthesized and studied. Polymeric networks of synthesized FGs were comprised of chemically cross-linked polyacrylamide with interpenetrating physical network of natural polysaccharide—Guar or Xanthan. Cylindrical samples approximately 10 mm in height and 13 mm in diameter were immersed in a water bath and examined using medical ultrasound (8.5 MHz). The acoustic properties of FGs were characterized by the intensity of reflected echo signal. It was found that the echogenicity of sub-microparticles provides visualization not only of the outer geometry of the gel sample but of its inner structure as well. In particular, the echogenicity of FGs interior depended on the concentration of magnetic particles in the FGs network. The ultrasound monitoring of the shape, dimensions, and inner structure of FGs in the applied external magnetic field is demonstrated. It is especially valuable for the application of FGs in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

A series of heterometallic carboxylate 1D polymers of the general formula [LnIIICd2(piv)7(H2O)2]n·nMeCN (LnIII = Sm (1), Eu (2), Tb (3), Dy (4), Ho (5), Er (6), Yb (7); piv = anion of trimethylacetic acid) was synthesized and structurally characterized. The use of CdII instead of ZnII under similar synthetic conditions resulted in the formation of 1D polymers, in contrast to molecular trinuclear complexes with LnIIIZn2 cores. All complexes 1–7 are isostructural. The luminescent emission and excitation spectra for 2–4 have been studied, the luminescence decay kinetics for 2 and 3 was measured. Magnetic properties of the complexes 3–5 and 7 have been studied; 4 and 7 exhibited the properties of field-induced single-molecule magnets in an applied external magnetic field. Magnetic properties of 4 and 7 were modelled using results of SA-CASSCF/SO-RASSI calculations and SINGLE_ANISO procedure. Based on the analysis of the magnetization relaxation and the results of ab initio calculations, it was found that relaxation in 4 predominantly occurred by the sum of the Raman and QTM mechanisms, and by the sum of the direct and Raman mechanisms in the case of 7.

The present work theoretically investigates the natural convection blood flow as a Brinkman-type fluid with uniformly distributed magnetic particles in a circular cylindrical tube with the applied external magnetic field. The classical model for the blood flow is generalized by using the definition of Caputo time-fractional derivative. The exact solutions are obtained by using the Laplace and Henkel transforms. Unlike the classical model, the obtained general results are expressed in the form of “Lorenzo and Hartley’s” and “Robotnov and Hartley’s” functions. Graphs are plotted to show the effects of different parameters on the blood flow. Furthermore, the velocity and temperature distributions are discussed in terms of memory. The effect of fractional parameter α for a long and short time has also been observed. It is noticed that blood velocity can be controlled using the fractional parameter. It is also found that, for τ > 0 , fluid and particles motion increased, and reverse behavior is observed for τ < 0 . It has been noticed that increasing values of particle mass parameter P m and magnetic parameter M slow down the motion of blood and magnetic particles. These results are helpful for effective drug delivery and regulating blood flow.

This study focuses on the influence of an applied external magnetic field on the electrodeposition process and capacitive performances of MnO2, as pseudo-capacitive active material for supercapacitors electrodes. MnO2 was electrochemically deposited on Si/Au substrates in the presence and in the absence of a 0.5 T magnet, and its capacitive performance was tested via electrochemical characterization. The samples obtained in the presence of the magnetic field show a positive influence on the deposition process: the increase in deposition efficiency leads to more compact and uniform MnO2 coatings, with a decrease in capacitance values for the samples produced with the magnetic field.

The application of magnetic nano-photocatalysts in clean water technologies, has been widely studied due to their improved chemical and physical properties. Due to the incorporation of magnetic materials into the nano-photocatalysts, the separation of the resultant nanocomposite can be facilitated via an applied external magnetic field, leading to more economic and also more ecologically friendly water refinement procedure. This paper presents a short review of magnetic nanomaterials in the purification of contaminated water/wastewater.

In the paper we present an implementation of resonance coupling between a unidirectional air waveguide and two cavities with one-way rotating state in a two-dimensional dielectric photonic crystal and a magneto-optical photonic crystal. We theoretically calculate the dispersion curves of the line defect waveguide and the dispersion curves of waveguide-cavity interaction, respectively. Numerical simulations show that, via waveguide-cavity coupling, a series of interesting resonance phenomena can be generated in the system. By modifying direction of the applied external magnetic field, storing and discharging of photonic energy can be realized. Our work may provide a practical and useful guidance for optical communications.
