Background: The United Nations Program on HIV or AIDS has committed to eliminating the vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus. However, significant number of newborn and children are acquiring HIV every year. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess knowledge of mother on vertical transmission of HIV and associated factors among non-pregnant women receiving antiretroviral therapy in the West Wollega, Western Ethiopia. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study design was used on a sample of 422 non-pregnant women attending antiretroviral therapy clinic in West Wollega from 26 February to 26 March 2019. Systematic sampling was used to select the study participants. Pretested and structured interviewer-administered questionnaires and telephone interview were used to collect the data. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify factors associated with the knowledge of mother on vertical transmission of HIV. Odds ratio along with 95% confidence interval were estimated to measure the strength of the association. Level of statistical significance was declared at p-value less than 0.05. Result: Out of total participants, 94.1% (95% confidence interval: (91.7%, 96.2%)) of them were knowledgeable about vertical transmission of HIV. Urban resident (adjusted odds ratio: 2.36, 95% confidence interval: (1.27, 4.39)), primary school (adjusted odds ratio: 2.94, 95% confidence interval: (1.11, 7.83)), secondary school (adjusted odds ratio: 3.39, 95% confidence interval: (1.53, 7.55)), being on antiretroviral therapy for greater than 2 years (adjusted odds ratio: 2.67, 95% confidence interval: 1.02, 6.99)), and having child living with HIV (adjusted odds ratio: 1.54, 95% confidence interval: (1.07, 3 .83)) were significantly associated with the knowledge of mother on vertical transmission of HIV. Conclusion: The study indicated that 5.9% of the women lack knowledge about vertical transmission of HIV. This knowledge associated with sociodemographic factors, such as residence, educational status, experiences of having child living with HIV, and being on antiretroviral therapy for greater than 2 years. Thus, interventions toward the elimination of new newborn HIV infections should consider these factors.

Background: Global migration is increasingly driven by socioeconomic and political unrest, raising a potentially challenging burden for healthcare systems. A significant group of non-South African citizens present in the country are undocumented migrants and have not restricted access to healthcare services. Objectives: This study explored the behaviour and socioeconomic factors of undocumented migrants missing Antiretroviral Therapy clinic appointments. Methods: A qualitative cross-sectional approach was used. Semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis of 17 undocumented migrants, who missed more than four appointments in the first 12 months since antiretroviral therapy initiation, were conducted. Thematic analysis and coding categorised the findings into themes. Reliability and validity were ensured through intercoder agreement, audio recording, triangulation, bracketing, and member checking. Results: The finding revealed that registering to more than one healthcare facility, self-transfer to another facility, and job hunting resulted in clients missing their scheduled appointments. Conclusion: The conclusion drawn from this study is that the Electronic Patient Management System must improve to control the number of clients missing clinic appointments.

The book you’ve been reading can only be a vignette, a brief description of an evolving field; life goes on. Most happily, so too has Nancy’s life. Her kidney transplant was in May 2016, and she was able to come back quickly to her old job as full-time office manager at a thriving physical therapy clinic where she’s highly esteemed by both staff and patients. She told me,...

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is rising globally. Dietetic intervention, as part of a multidisciplinary team approach, is increasingly being recommended for the effective management of patients with MetS. This study was designed to assess the impact of a dietetic intervention on MetS characteristics of patients attending the Diet Therapy Clinic at Tema General Hospital, Ghana. METHODOLOGY: A prospective pre-post single-arm intervention study was conducted among 168 participants who had been diagnosed with MetS and were referred to the Diet Therapy Clinic for dietetic intervention. Data on body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), fasting blood glucose (FBG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), serum triglyceride (TG), and blood pressure (BP) were collected at baseline and after three months of receiving a dietetic intervention. RESULTS: The MetS measures (BMI, WC, FBG, HDL and TG) of the patients improved at the end of the three months period (32.9 kg/m2 vs 31.7 kg/m2, p = 0.001; 101.2 cm vs 98.9 cm, p = 0.001; 11.0 mmol/L vs 7.7 mmol/L, p = 0.001; 1.1 mmol/L vs 1.2 mmol/L, p = 0.001; 2.0 mmol/L vs 1.9 mmol/L, p = 0.001 respectively). There were improvements in the mean systolic and diastolic BP values recorded after the three months (153 mmHg vs 131 mmHg, p = 0.001 and 98 mmHg vs 85 mmHg, p = 0.001 respectively). CONCLUSION: Dietetic intervention was found to have improved the MetS characteristics of patients.
