An accurate model for vibration of a porous magneto-electro-thermo-elastic functionally graded (METE-FG) cylindrical shell made of barium titanate (BaTiO3) and cobalt diiron tetraoxide (CoFe2O4) with magneto-electro-thermal loadings is proposed within the framework of Hamiltonian system. Four types of porosity distribution profiles in the thickness direction are considered. By introducing a new total eigenvector, the higher-order governing differential equations are transformed into a set of lower-order equations. The exact solution for free vibration of METE-FG shells can be expanded in terms of specific symplectic eigenfunctions having seven possible explicit forms. Subsequently, analytical frequency equations and vibration mode shapes for METE-FG shells with various boundary conditions are derived simultaneously. A comparison study is presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed model and very good agreement is observed. The effects of material properties and magneto-electro-thermal loadings on free vibration characteristics of METE-FG cylindrical shells are analyzed and discussed in detail.

AbstractThe primary concern for HIV-infected pregnant women is the vertical transmission that can occur during pregnancy, in the intrauterine period, during labour or even breastfeeding. The risk of vertical transmission can be reduced by early diagnosis. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new methods to detect this virus in a quick and low-cost fashion, as colorimetric assays for HIV detection tend to be laborious and costly. Herein, attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis was employed to distinguish HIV-infected patients from healthy uninfected controls in a total of 120 blood plasma samples. The best sensitivity (83%) and specificity (92%) values were obtained using the genetic algorithm with linear discriminant analysis (GA-LDA). These good classification results in addition to the potential for high analytical frequency, the low cost and reagent-free nature of this method demonstrate its potential as an alternative tool for HIV screening during pregnancy.

In this work, the Duffing’s type analytical frequency–amplitude relationship for nonlinear oscillators is derived by using Hés formulation and Jacobi elliptic functions. Comparison of the numerical results obtained from the derived analytical expression using Jacobi elliptic functions with respect to the exact ones is performed by considering weak and strong Duffing’s nonlinear oscillators.

The vibrational characteristics of multilayer magnetic nanocomposite beams reinforced by graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) are analytically investigated in this paper. The effects of an elastic foundation are also studied. The material properties of piece-wise GPL-reinforced nanocomposites (GPLRCs) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction of the beams and can be estimated by using the modified Halpin–Tsai model and rules of mixtures. The two-dimensional elasticity theory is adopted to derive the governing equation combined with the state space method, and the analytical frequency equations for simply supported beams are obtained. In addition, the effects of a magnetic field are involved via Maxwell’s equation, and the corresponding Lorentz forces are considered in this work. Numerical examples are carried out to examine the effects of magnetic fields in various directions, the GPL distribution pattern, the scale parameter and weight function of GPLs, as well as an elastic foundation, on the vibration behaviors of functionally graded (FG)-GPLRC beams.

This article evaluates the use of experimental frequency response functions for damage detection and quantification of a concrete beam with the help of model updating theory. The approach is formulated as an optimization problem that intends to adjust the analytical frequency response functions from a benchmark finite element model to match with the experimental frequency response functions from the damaged structure. Neither model expansion nor reduction is needed because the individual analytical frequency response function formulation is derived. Unlike the commonly used approaches that assume zero damping or viscous damping for simplicity, a more realistic hysteretic damping model is considered in the analytical frequency response function formulation. The accuracy and anti-noise ability of the proposed approach are first verified by the numerical simulations. Next, a laboratory reinforced concrete beam with different levels of damage is utilized to investigate the applicability in an actual test. The results show successful damage quantification and damping updating of the beam by matching the analytical frequency response functions with the experimental frequency response functions in each damage scenario.

Abstract This study proposed a method to determine the sum of the concentrations of inosine 5’-monophosphate (IMP) and guanosine 5’-monophosphate (GMP) in final and intermediate products through a combination of UV spectroscopy and multivariate calibration. Partial Least Squares regression (PLS regression) was used for the data analysis and the proposed methods presented errors of around 4 mg/L. In addition, the analysis cost is 10 times lower than the reference chromatographic method and the analytical frequency is 20 samples/hour.
