This paper explores the thermochemical treatment of cemented carbides (CC), specifically the boriding process. Six different types of CCs with different size of tungsten carbide (TC) grains were chosen as experimental materials. They contained binders of different chemical compositions. In five CCs, the binders were pure metals: cobalt (four of them) and nickel (one of them). In the six one, the binder was a complex Ni-Co-Cr-based alloy. Samples of the different types of CCs were prepared by grinding and polishing and then half of them underwent boriding process. The experiment aimed to find how boriding affects the final properties of CCs and their structure. Microstructural changes in the materials were examined using X-ray diffraction and optical and electron microscopy. Changes in mechanical properties and wear resistance were evaluated using hardness testing and the Ball on Disk test. The experimental results, for example, shown that CC with nickel binder had lowest wear resistance from all tested sorts of CC.

The effects of granulation of reactive mixtures Ti-Cr-C and Ti-Cr-C-Ni on the combustion temperature and velocity, as well as phase composition and mechanical properties (crushing ability) of combustion products, were studied. Granulation was associated with a 1.5-fold increase in combustion velocity, caused by a nearly 10-fold increase in gas permeability. Secondary reactions between TiC, Cr7C3, and molten Ni led to the formation of (Ti,Cr)C FCC solid solution and Ni2.88Cr1.12 intermetallics. After the combustion of Ti-Cr-C-Ni mixtures, prolonged fluorescence was registered, suggesting the exothermic nature of secondary phase formation reactions. The introduction of the nickel binder decreased the content of Cr in the solid solution (Ti,Cr)C owing to the formation of the Ni2.88Cr1.12 phase. To prevent the Cr depletion from the carbide solid solution, Ni-20%Cr binder was added to the granulated 80%(Ti + C)/20%(3Cr + 2C) mixture. Combustion of granulated mixture yielded brittle porous sinter cake, which was easy to crush and mill, whereas the combustion products from the powdered mixtures were more ductile and harder to crush.

This study aims to highlight the grains growth of tungsten carbide in the nickel binder phase, in function of sintering temperature of a hot isostatic pressed - HIP (at 60 bar) material, targeting the morphological behavior of the grain size and densification of the composite WC-8Ni. Cylindrical samples 25 mm x 15 mm were sintered in compression at temperatures ranging from 1380 °C to 1460 °C. The results showed that increasing the sintering temperature, there is an increase in WC grain size, the hardness decreases and the porosity is reduced increasing the specific gravity.

At present, cobalt is the most commonly used binder material in tungsten carbide based hardmetals. Current research on sliding wear performance of these cemented carbides, however, reveals promising results for nickel binder as well. Test samples of WC-Co and WC-Ni hardmetals have been machined and surface finished by wire-EDM and grinding. From comparative dry sliding pin-on-plate experiments on wire-EDM’ed, ground and polished grades, correlations are derived between wear volume loss and friction on the one hand and contact pressure, sliding distance, binder phase and microstructure on the other hand. The lowest wear levels are encountered with polished cemented carbides. The EDM induced surface modification turns out to deteriorate wear resistance, especially during the running-in stage of sliding. These findings are in agreement with Xray diffraction measurements of the residual stress level in the WC phase.
