Daggers discovered at Tserovani cemetery of the Bronze Age - prominent specimens of decorative-applied art selected for the new exhibition of the Museum of Archaeology of the State Museum-Reserve of Greater Mtskheta – were submitted to the restoration-research laboratory of archaeological and ethnographic objects of S. Janashia Museum of Georgia of the Georgian National Museum because of repeated corrosion in some areas. Dagger N7232 is composed and its handle is abundantly incrusted with vitreous mass. Most of the incrustation is produced with the method of melting vitreous mass inside a metal cutting. A strange exception is white circular inlay against blue background situated in three triangular cuttings. One of incrustations is damaged. The remnants were found in the cut of damaged incrustation were the vitreous mass and small grey, tubular rods made of 94% tin and 4% copper alloy (pewter) fitted in a wooden remnant. Research allowed us to interpret presumable methods and prominence of producing incrustation: white glass embedded in circular silver partitions against the background of blue glass. The analyses showed that the dagger was made from the typical for the late bronze period alloy- tin bronze. The artefacts, with all signs of historical development (technology, decoration methods, and ornamental motives) belong to the Colchian culture and can date in frame of this culture. Based on the presently available data it can be stated that we are dealing with a completely new technology unknown up to present and that it can be regarded as predecessor of the cloisonne incrustation.

In the prologue to Walid Raad’s Hostage: The Bachar Tapes (2001), the speaker asks that his words appear against a grey background. Or, he continues after a pause, ‘use a blue background . . . blue just like the Mediterranean’. Beginning with this colourful riddle, this article investigates the work of the monochrome in the Atlas Group Archive. With this attention to the monochrome as a format, the author’s goal is to move away from the categories of documentary and fiction that dominate discussions of Raad and parafictional work more generally, towards the formal infrastructure through which such works command belief and emotion. This attention to the aesthetic form of the archive not only brings into focus the constituent role of design in the construction of knowledge, but it also reveals the transformation of the monochrome in its encounters with the archive, technical media, and the chromatics of affective capitalism.

Background: Diagnosis of extrapulmonary histoplasmosis in HIV seronegative and immunocompetent patients is often challenging, so a high index of suspicion is required. Cutaneous manifestation of infection shows a wide spectrum of lesions including erythematous plaques; maculopapules; crusted, verrucous, or desquamative papules and nodules; abscesses; and mucocutaneous ulcers among others. Due to the variations in its clinical presentation, histopathology plays a very important role in the detection of spores and the confirmation of diagnosis. Objectives: The aim of our study was to analyze clinicopathological characteristics of cutaneous manifestations of biopsy-proven histoplasmosis in HIV seronegative individuals. We also examined the utility of Fite stain for the diagnosis of Histoplasma capsulatum on tissue biopsy sections. Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study on 7 patients who were HIV seronegative and clinically manifested with isolated cutaneous lesions or disseminated disease. Skin biopsy from the lesions was performed on all 7 patients. In addition to H&E staining and special stains for detecting fungus, Fite staining was performed on all of the cases to study its utility in detecting H. capsulatum spores. Results: The skin lesions were widely disseminated in all patients and the most common cutaneous lesions were papules, present in all 7 patients. On review of the H&E-stained slides, the most common pattern was histiocytic lobular panniculitis-like infiltrate observed in 4 cases. Fite stain highlighted the yeast as magenta-colored spores on a blue background in all cases, except for 1 with a granulomatous pattern. Conclusion: A primary cutaneous manifestation of H. capsulatum infection in non-HIV-infected individuals is extremely rare. Fite stain could aid in differentiating the spores of H. capsulatum from those of other fungi, Cryptococcus and Candida in particular.

This study investigated the influence of white vs. 12 background and overlay colors on the reading process in twenty-four school-age children. Previous research reported that colors could affect reading skills as an important factor in the emotional and physiological state of the body. The aim of the study was to assess developmental differences between second and third grade students of an elementary school, and to evaluate differences in electroencephalography (EEG), ocular, electrodermal activities (EDA) and heart rate variability (HRV). Our findings showed a decreasing trend with age regarding EEG power bands (Alpha, Beta, Delta, Theta) and lower scores of reading duration and eye-tracking measures in younger children compared to older children. As shown in the results, HRV parameters showed higher scores in 12 background and overlay colors among second than third grade students, which is linearly correlated to the level of stress and is readable from EDA measures as well. Our study showed the calming effect on second graders of turquoise and blue background colors. Considering other colors separately for each parameter, we assumed that there are no systematic differences in reading duration, EEG power band, eye-tracking and EDA measures.

<p style='text-indent:20px;'>Industries that use fruits as raw materials must, at some point in the process, classify them to discard the unsuitable ones and thus ensure the quality of the final product. To produce mango nectar, it is necessary to ensure that the mango is mature enough to start the extraction of the nectar; however, sorting thousands of mangoes may require many people, who can easily lose attention and reduce the accuracy of the result. Such kind of decision can be supported by current Artificial Intelligence techniques. The theoretical details of the processing are presented, as well as the programming code of the neural network using SCILAB as a computer language; the code includes the color extraction from mango images. SCILAB programming is simple, efficient and does not require computers with large processing capacity. The classification was validated with 30 images (TIF format) of Manila variety mango; the mangoes were placed on a blue background to easily separate the background from the object of interest. Four and six mangoes were used to train the neural network. This application of neural networks is part of an undergraduate course on artificial intelligence, which shows the potential of these techniques for solving real and concrete problems.</p>

Although campaigns promoting organ donation have proved their effectiveness, increasing the number of people who explicitly agree to become donors is still difficult. Based on the social marketing notion of persuasive technology, we reasoned that it was timely to focus on the design of this persuasive technology and to analyze its contribution in particularly challenging contexts such as organ donation. More specifically, the originality of the present study lay in the way we linked the field of persuasive technology to the theory of social representations, and combined them with an analysis of the ergonomic aspects of interface layout. This study had two complementary goals. The first was to determine whether the sociocognitive salience of the central elements of social representations (i.e., the most frequent and important themes related to the subject—here, organ donation—for individuals), can be used to achieve persuasive outcomes. The second was to determine whether interface layout, in terms of information location and background characteristics (color and contrast), can strengthen the persuasive impact. University students (N > 200) were exposed to a computer screen displaying a message involving either central or peripheral elements of the social representations of organ donation (status), placed either in the middle or on one side of the screen (location), and shown against either a white or a blue background (background). Eye-tracking data were recorded, in addition to self-reported data. In line with the elaboration likelihood model, results showed that participants who were exposed to central (vs. peripheral) elements of the social representations of organ donation followed the central route in processing information. Moreover, they had stronger attitudes, and more of them stated that they were actual organ donors. Importantly, however, at least for some variables, these status-related effects were not independent of the interface layout. More specifically, the persuasive impact of the central elements was enhanced when the information was displayed in the middle (vs. the side) of the screen and when it was displayed on a white (vs. blue) background. We discuss the theoretical and practical issues raised by these results.

Purpose: To evaluate the possibility of registration of the photopic negative response (PhNR) without pupil dilatation in healthy individuals to determine the dysfunction of neurons of the inner retina.Methods: 12 healthy persons (23 eyes) aged 24 to 40 years were examined. Refraction anomalies did not exceed 0.5 diopters. A PhNR was evaluated in photopic ERGs recorded on a blue background with red flashes of four intensities (0.375, 0.75, 1.5, 3.0 cd·s/m2) using the RETIport/scan21 (Roland Consult). First, ERG was recorded with the natural pupil (3.5 ± 0.2 mm). Then, the recording was repeated after drug mydriasis (average pupil size 8.7 ± 0.1 mm).Results. In eyes with natural pupil width, in comparison with drug mydriasis, PhNR amplitudes in responses to weakest stimuli (0.375 cd·s/m2) were significantly reduced. The effect of pupil size on the PhNR amplitude from a baseline was virtually absent in responses to higher strength flashes. This phenomenon can be associated with an irregular distribution of light over the retina with small pupil size, the effect of which is maximal in responses to weak flashes. For the maximal brightness stimuli (3.0 cd·s/m2), differences were found between groups of non-dilated and dilated pupils in the amplitudes of the b-wave and PhNR from the b-peak, which may reflect a decrease in the number of stimulated photoreceptors during ganzfeld stimulation when the pupil is not dilated.Conclusion. The effect of pupil size on the parameters of the PhNR was most significant in the ERG with minimal flash strength and it decreases in responses to flashes of higher brightness. If it is necessary to record the ERG without drug mydriasis, especially in screening studies, it is recommended to limit the protocol to estimate the PhNR from a baseline in responses to maximal flashes, and use the relative parameter — the amplitude ratio of PhNR/b. Zymography is a widely used electrophoretic method to determine proteolytic activities in samples from various sources. The method is based on copolymerizing a suitable protein substrate within a sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel. Following electrophoretic separation of the protease containing samples and a suitable incubation period, degradation of the substrate can be visualized through staining with Coomassie blue. Sites of proteolysis become visible as white bands on a dark blue background. However, this staining protocol requires considerable amounts of ethanol and acetic acid to remove unbound dye molecules. In this report, we describe a new staining protocol using Ponceau S which offers substantial advantages in terms of assay usability and cost reduction, especially when performing large quantities of zymograms or in resource-limited settings. Fast and reproducible staining of zymograms with our protocol is demonstrated, and reliable quantitation of proteolytic activity in comparison to the standard Coomassie staining procedure is shown.
