Background: Recent studies have shown the increased risk of mortality in cases with acute leukemia and iron overload. We aimed to determine the status of iron overload in patients with acute leukemia. Materials & Methods: Patients diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) between January 2015 and December 2019 were included in the study. Results: At 6 months, there were statistically more patients with serum ferritin >1000 in the AML group compared to the ALL group (p = 0,011). Conclusion: Iron overload occurs earlier in patients with AML; the difference disappears after 6 months of treatment. It is the correct point to emphasize that iron overload is an important factor of pretransplant morbidity, especially in AML cases.

One of the key distinguishing aspects of underwater manipulation tasks is the perception challenges of the ocean environment, including turbidity, backscatter, and lighting effects. Consequently, underwater perception often relies on sonar-based measurements to estimate the vehicle’s state and surroundings, either standalone or in concert with other sensing modalities, to support the perception necessary to plan and control manipulation tasks. Simulation of the multibeam echosounder, while not a substitute for in-water testing, is a critical capability for developing manipulation strategies in the complex and variable ocean environment. Although several approaches exist in the literature to simulate synthetic sonar images, the methods in the robotics community typically use image processing and video rendering software to comply with real-time execution requirements. In addition to a lack of physics-based interaction model between sound and the scene of interest, several basic properties are absent in these rendered sonar images–notably the coherent imaging system and coherent speckle that cause distortion of the object geometry in the sonar image. To address this deficiency, we present a physics-based multibeam echosounder simulation method to capture these fundamental aspects of sonar perception. A point-based scattering model is implemented to calculate the acoustic interaction between the target and the environment. This is a simplified representation of target scattering but can produce realistic coherent image speckle and the correct point spread function. The results demonstrate that this multibeam echosounder simulator generates qualitatively realistic images with high efficiency to provide the sonar image and the physical time series signal data. This synthetic sonar data is a key enabler for developing, testing, and evaluating autonomous underwater manipulation strategies that use sonar as a component of perception.

The effect of geological modeling largely depends on the normal estimation results of geological sampling points. However, due to the sparse and uneven characteristics of geological sampling points, the results of normal estimation have great uncertainty. This paper proposes a geological modeling method based on the dynamic normal estimation of sparse point clouds. The improved method consists of three stages: (1) using an improved local plane fitting method to estimate the normals of the point clouds; (2) using an improved minimum spanning tree method to redirect the normals of the point clouds; (3) using an implicit function to construct a geological model. The innovation of this method is an iterative estimation of the point cloud normal. The geological engineer adjusts the normal direction of some point clouds according to the geological law, and then the method uses these correct point cloud normals as a reference to estimate the normals of all point clouds. By continuously repeating the iterative process, the normal estimation result will be more accurate. Experimental results show that compared with the original method, the improved method is more suitable for the normal estimation of sparse point clouds by adjusting normals, according to prior knowledge, dynamically.

Recently, it was shown that the solution of the Helmholtz equation can be approximated by a series over the solutions of iterative parabolic equations (IPEs). An expansion of the fundamental solution of the Helmholtz equation over solutions of IPEs is considered. It is shown that the resulting Taylor-like series can be easily transformed into a Padé-type approximation. In practical propagation problems such iterative Padé approximations exhibit improved wide-angle capabilities and faster convergence to the solution of the Helmholtz equation in comparison to Taylor-like expansion over IPEs solutions. A Gaussian smoothing of the expansion terms gives insight into the derivation of initial conditions consistent for IPEs, which can be used for point source simulation. A correct point source model consistent with the wide-angle one-way propagation equations is important in many practical applications of the parabolic equations theory.

This research is a comparative jurisprudential study that focuses on Imam Al-Bayhaqi’s preferred opinions in his book Al-Khilafiyat (The Disagreements), the part of Al-Rida’a (Breastfeeding). It is considered one of the most important familial topics that is concerned with organizing the social relations in Islam, strengthens the family ties and that prevents the family disintegration due to the ignorance and lack in comprehending Sharia laws (Islam law) in all aspects. The study follows the inductive and descriptive method. It aims at examining the prohibition of marriage when breastfeeding takes place at the time of woman’s conversion to Islam or during her infidelity period. It further aims at verifying the prohibition that helps to know the most correct point of view among jurists. That is; to know whether or not the preference of Imam Al-Bayhaqi’s opinion or other jurists is the correct issue in his book, Al-Khilafat. This preference depends on the strength of the transmission evidence inferred by each doctrine. The study has found that five times of separate breastfeeding leads to sense of prohibition, and that the period that a mother should wean her child in infancy is that of two years only.

AbstractDeaminase base editing has emerged as a tool to install or correct point mutations in the genomes of living cells in a wide range of organisms. However, the genome-wide off-target effects introduced by base editors in the mammalian genome have been examined in only one study. Here, we have investigated the fidelity of cytosine base editor 4 (BE4) and adenine base editors (ABE) in mouse embryos using unbiased whole-genome sequencing of a family-based trio cohort. The same sgRNA was used for BE4 and ABE. We demonstrate that BE4-edited mice carry an excess of single-nucleotide variants and deletions compared to ABE-edited mice and controls. Therefore, an optimization of cytosine base editors is required to improve its fidelity. While the remarkable fidelity of ABE has implications for a wide range of applications, the occurrence of rare aberrant C-to-T conversions at specific target sites needs to be addressed.

One of the most contested arguments in contemporary just war thinking has been the question of the right starting point of analysis. On one side of the argument, one finds Catholic Church officials who argue for a ‘presumption against war’ as jumping-off point. On the other, one encounters critics of that position, led by James Turner Johnson, who defend a ‘presumption against injustice’ as the correct point of entry. Interestingly, both sides refer to St Thomas Aquinas, the key figure in the systematisation of the classical just war, as giving support to their respective position. While Johnson was vindicated as far as Aquinas’s historical starting point is concerned, debate about the contemporary purchase of the presumption against war has continued until the present day. Historical just war thinkers like Johnson have criticised the Church not only for turning the logic of the just war tradition on its head by reversing the inherited hierarchy between the so-called deontological and prudential criteria, but have also questioned the empirical evidence that has put the Church on this trajectory. In this article, I explain how the debate about the presumption against war continues to be relevant by engaging with the general direction the Catholic Church has taken up until Pope Francis and by investigating the particular example of its position on drone warfare. I point out that while the presumption against war runs counter to what Aquinas wrote during his days, Thomistic virtue ethics is generally open to development. The Church may thus claim a Thomistic patrimony in advocating for a presumption against war, but, as I demonstrate, the just war thinking that results, often referred to as modern-war pacifism, struggles to address important moral issues raised by contemporary warfare.
