Background/Aim. Chronic venous ulcer (CVU), a disease of high incidence, is one of the most serious chronic venous insufficiency complications. It has been estimated that there are 1%-2% of adults with CVU deriving a high social significance. The aim of this study was to, using the clinical experience, determine the influence of subcutaneous paratibial fasciotomy (SPF) on the course and the treatment outcome of CVU. Methods. From February 2006 to September 2009 SPF was applied in a group of 43 patients treated for CVU along with other standard methods of treatment, and its influence on the course of ulcus cruris was followed up regarding the control group of another 43 patients treated with standard methods with no paratibial fasciotomy. Results. In the group of patients treated with SPF there was a significantly better clinical course of ulcus cruris closing as compared with the group of patients in which this method was not applied. In the group with paratibial fasaciotomy there was no Thiersch skin transplant rejection recorded nor ulcus recurrence within a 6-month after-surgery period, while in the control group there was Thiersch skeen transplant rejection in 11 patients, and ulcus recurrence in 9 patients within the same period. Conclusion. SPF is a useful method with a favorable influence on better clinical course of ulcus cruris closing, reducing recurrence rate and improving local microcirculation in the affected region. Operation act itself is safe, requires no specific equipment nor special training of the team of surgeons, thus being applicable to the majority of patients with ulcus cruris indicated for surgery.

Kin substitutes present a heterogenous group of substances that aid in temporary or permanent covering of wounds of various types. Although they can not replace surgical debridement or standard methods of treatment they proffer an alternative to standard methods of treatment whenever the latter are ineffective. Skin substitutes require less wound vascularization, they increase the wound’s cutaneous component, decrease or eliminate inhibitory factors, decrease inflammatory process and grant quick and safe wound closing. Mast cells besides regulating vascular reactions in trauma zone also boost immune, defensive and reparative processes in the wound. Stimulatory influence of mast cells upon fibrosis depend on activation of fibroblasts rather than direct collagen production by mast cells. Attention is focused at studies of autologous adult stem-cells’ stimulation in various organs and tissues as well as at intercellular matrix (ICM). ICM besides being cells’ fastening substrate also controls proliferation, differentiation, migration, apoptosis cells’ functions. Collagen, fibronectin, laminin, proteoglycanes, cytokines and chemokynes are important ICM components. Microcirculation plays a substantial role in wound healing process. Cultivated fibroblasts due to their ability for long-term synthesis of ICM components can effectively correct wound healing process. Allogenic fibroblasts can be successfully used as skin substitutes’ components in the treatment of skin wounds and burns. Unlike autologous fibroblasts the allogenic cells may be obtained in advance and freeze-stored in large quantities.

This study aims at concluding the current evidence on the therapeutic effects of acupoints stimulation for cancer patients with anxiety and depression. Randomized controlled trials using acupoints stimulation for relieving anxiety and/or depression in cancer patients were searched, and 11 studies were finally included, of which eight trials compared acupoints stimulation with standard methods of treatment/care, and acupoints stimulation showed significantly better effects in improving depression than using standard methods of treatment/care. Four studies compared true acupoints stimulation with sham methods, and no significant differences can be found between groups for either depression or anxiety, although the pooled effects still favored true intervention. For the five studies that evaluated sleep quality, the results were conflicting, with three supporting the superiority of acupoints stimulation in improving sleep quality and two demonstrating no differences across groups. Acupoints stimulation seems to be an effective approach in relieving depression and anxiety in cancer patients, and placebo effects may partially contribute to the benefits. However, the evidence is not conclusive due to the limited number of included studies and the clinical heterogeneity identified among trials. More rigorous designed randomized, sham-controlled studies are necessary in future research.

Objective. To improve the results of treatment of the ulcer-necrotic affections of the foot soft tissues in patients, suffering an ischemic form of diabetic foot syndrome (DFS). Маterials and methods. The investigated group have consisted of 48 patients, to whom necrectomy was performed, because a tendency for the wounds healing under the influence of standard methods of treatment through two weeks was absent. Results. After application of the tactics elaborated a complete healing of the wounds was registered in 89.6%, and a partial one - in 10.4% patients. Of 38 patients of a control group, to whom a standard treatment was conducted, the wounds have healed completely in 11 (28.9%), and partially - in 12 (31.6%) patients. Conclusion. Plastic coverage of the foot wounds after necrectomy and early performed revascularization operation for the ischemic form of DFS is indicated to patients, in whom the wounds are lacking a tendency towards healing under the influence of standard methods of treatment through two weeks.

Cancer remains one of the major challenges of the 21st century. The increasing numbers of cases are not accompanied by adequate progress in therapy. The standard methods of treatment often do not lead to the expected effects. Therefore, it is extremely important to find new, more effective treatments. One of the most promising research directions is immunotherapy, including the use of specific types of microorganisms. This type of treatment is expected to stimulate the immune system for the selective elimination of cancer cells. The research results seem to be promising and show the intensive activation of the immune response as a result of bacterial stimulation. In addition, it is possible to use microorganisms in many different ways, based on their specific properties, that is, toxin production, anaerobic lifestyle, or binding substances that can be delivered to a specific location (vectors). This paper provides an overview of selected microorganisms which are already in use or that are in the experimental phase. Just like any other therapy, the use of microbes for cancer treatment also has some disadvantages. Nevertheless, this kind of treatment can supplement conventional anticancer therapy, giving cancer patients a chance and hope of recovery.

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary intracranial tumor of the central nervous system, and the prognosis of GBM remains a challenge using the standard methods of treatment—TMZ, radiation, and surgical resection. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a helpful complementary and alternative medicine. However, there are relatively few studies on TCM for GBM.Purpose: We aimed to find the connection between TCM and anti-GBM.Study design: Network pharmacology and inflammatory microenvironment strategy were used to predict Siraitia grosvenorii (Luo Han Guo) target for treating glioblastoma.Methods: We mainly used network pharmacology and bioinformatics.Results: CCL5 was significantly highly expressed in GBM with poor prognostics. Uni-cox and randomForest were used to determine that CCL5 was especially a biomarker in GBM. CCL5 was also the target for SG and TMZ. The active ingredient of Luo Han Guo — squalene and CCL5 —showed high binding efficiency. CCL5, a chemotactic ligand, was enriched and positively correlated in eosinophils. CCL5 was also the target of Luo Han Guo, and its effective active integrate compound –— squalene — might act on CCL5.Conclusion: SG might be a new complementary therapy of the same medicine and food, working on the target CCL5 and playing an anti-GBM effect. CCL5 might affect the immune microenvironment of GBM.

Three-dimensional reconstruction techniques using electron microscopy have been principally developed for application to 2-D arrays (i.e. monolayers) of biological molecules and symmetrical single particles (e.g. helical viruses). However many biological molecules that crystallise form multilayered microcrystals which are unsuitable for study by either the standard methods of 3-D reconstruction or, because of their size, by X-ray crystallography. The grid sectioning technique enables a number of different projections of such microcrystals to be obtained in well defined directions (e.g. parallel to crystal axes) and poses the problem of how best these projections can be used to reconstruct the packing and shape of the molecules forming the microcrystal.Given sufficient projections there may be enough information to do a crystallographic reconstruction in Fourier space. We however have considered the situation where only a limited number of projections are available, as for example in the case of catalase platelets where three orthogonal and two diagonal projections have been obtained (Fig. 1).

Although the general ultrastructure of Cyanidium caldarium, an acidophilic, thermophilic alga of questionable taxonomic rank, has been extensively studied (see review of literature in reference 1), some peculiar ultrastructural features of the chloroplast of this alga have not been noted by other investigators.Cells were collected and prepared for thin sections at the Yellowstone National Park and were also grown in laboratory cultures (45-52°C; pH 2-5). Fixation (glutaraldehyde-osmium), dehydration (ethanol), and embedding (Epon 812) were accomplished by standard methods. Replicas of frozenfracture d- etched cells were obtained in a Balzers apparatus. In addition, cells were examined after disruption in a French Press.

The measurement of magnification in the electron microscope is always troublesome especially when a goniometer stage is in use, since there can be wide variations from calibrated values. One elegant method (L.M.Brown, private communication) of avoiding the difficulties of standard methods would be to fit a device which displaces the specimen a small but known distance and recording the displacement by a double exposure. Such a device would obviate the need for changing the specimen and guarantee that the magnification was measured under precisely the conditions used.Such a small displacement could be produced by any suitable transducer mounted in one of the specimen translation mechanisms. In the present case a piezoelectric crystal was used. Modern synthetic piezo electric ceramics readily give reproducible displacements in the right range for quite modest voltages (for example: Joyce and Wilson, 1969).
