Cities and nations worldwide are pledging to energy and carbon neutral objectives that imply a huge contribution from buildings. High-performance targets, either zero energy or zero carbon, are typically difficult to be reached by single buildings, but groups of properly-managed buildings might reach these ambitious goals. For this purpose we need tools and experiences to model, monitor, manage and optimize buildings and their neighborhood-level systems. The paper describes the activities pursued for the deployment of an advanced energy management system for a multi-carrier energy grid of an existing neighborhood in the area of Milan. The activities included: (i) development of a detailed monitoring plan, (ii) deployment of the monitoring plan, (iii) development of a virtual model of the neighborhood and simulation of the energy performance. Comparisons against early-stage energy monitoring data proved promising and the generation system showed high efficiency (EER equal to 5.84), to be further exploited.

A solar cooling system with an optimized air-cooled double-effect water/LiBr absorption machine is proposed as a sustainable alternative to meet cooling demands in dry hot climates. This system allows eliminating the cooling towers in those regions of the planet where water is scarce. This work analyses the environmental benefits of this air-cooled system, as well as its environmental foot-prints, compared to a solar water-cooled single effect. In this regard, a methodology has been applied to calculate the annual saving in water consumption produced in a case study: a hospital located in Almer?a, in South of Spain. Further-more, the reduction in energy consumption and CO2 emissions is also quantified since this machine can be driven by solar energy and with higher efficiency than those of single effect.

Rapid population migration has been viewed as a critical factor impacting urban network construction and regional sustainable development. The supervision and analysis of population migration are necessary for guiding the optimal allocation of urban resources and for attaining the high efficiency development of region. Currently, the explorations of population migration are often restricted by the limitation of data. In the information era, search engines widely collect public attention, implying potential individual actions, and freely provide open, timelier, and large-scope search query data for helping explore regional phenomena and problems. In this paper, we endeavor to explore the possibility of adopting such data to depict population migration. Based on the search query from Baidu search engine, three migration attention indexes (MAIs) are constructed to capture public migration attention in cyber space. Taking three major urban agglomerations in China as case study, we conduct the correlation analysis among the cyber MAIs and population migration in geographical space. Results have shown that external-MAI and local-MAI can positively reflect the population migration inner regions and across regions from a holistic lens and that intercity-MAI can be a helpful supplement for the delineation of specific population flow. Along with the accumulation of cyber search query data, its potential in exploring population migration can be further reinforced.

Information acquisition plays an important role on the production operation of modern job shop to achieve the goals of high efficiency, good quality, low cost, little resource consumption and low environmental impacts. This paper proposes the equipment integrated information acquisition system, the objective of which is to sense or collect the on-site information related with production operation in order to support managers’ decision-making or other application systems as basic data. The system architecture is constructed with five layer components. Furthermore, the two supporting technologies of the system are presented including the adapter definition in the adapter level and the establishment of template repository in the service level. Finally, the case study of the system is demonstrated by the application of acquiring production progress information in machining job shop.

Compared with conventional airborne remote sensing application to engineering geological investigation, High precision Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Remote Sensing (UAV-RS) technology can improve work condition with advantages of high flexibility, low cost, high efficiency and up-to-date situation acquisition. Especially, it has very important engineering significance for quick and urgent geological disaster reconnaissance along transportation lines. In the paper, some aspects of application to transportation-line (pipeline, highway and railway) engineering geological investigation were discussed. The concerned key points, including components of UAV-RS system, data processing workflow and image interpretation were analyzed. As a case study, a UAV-RS application project for transportation-line geological disaster investigation was given. The utilization of this new remote sensing technology successfully collected and discovered potential geological disasters and provided scientific data for timely decision-making.
