Revealing gas-liquid permeable flow phenomena in the porous media is helpful for the environmental impact assessment of geological disposal of radioactive waste and purification of radioactive contamination water. This paper aims to investigate the liquid phase dispersion inside co-current downward gas-liquid flow in the bed packed with spherical particle as basic model. Water and air are injected from the top center of column, and water is spreading to the entire cross-section flowing down along the column. Radial dispersion of water is captured by electrical resistance tomography on several axial positions. The results indicated that liquid flow rate have impact on radial dispersion of water.

Two-phase swirling flow through a pipe is a complex turbulent flow and its prediction is still challenging. The present paper describes the experimental investigation of the air-water two phase swirling flow in vertical co-current flow. Swirling flow is induced by a twisted tape in a 20 mm inner diameter pipe. The flow is investigated using Ultrasonic Velocity Profiler (UVP), which allows the measurement of liquid and gas velocities simultaneously. Furthermore, simultaneous measurement of void fraction is performed using Wire Mesh Sensor (WMS). The experimental results reveal that swirling flow has significant impact on bubbles’ distribution. In low liquid flow rate, the average bubble velocity is fairly uniform along the radial position and void fraction increases in the near wall region. However, increasing liquid flow rate at constant gas flow rate leads to increase in void fraction in the core region, this is mainly due to drift velocity which is affected by centrifugal force. Experimental findings and parametric trends based on the effects of swirling flow are summarized and discussed.

Experiments were carried out to determine the pressure drop through an annular conduit filled with a plain square wire-mesh woven-screen matrix. The tests involved turbulent fully developed flow of air at steady-state conditions, with the modified Reynolds number (M(1−ε)/Re), based on the hydraulic radius of the packed bed, ranging from 5 × 10−4 to 5 × 10−3. The test section was built according to the geometry of a Stirling engine, simulating an annular regenerator with a radius ratio of 1.369 and a screen of mesh size 10. A corrected Ergun equation was used to correlate the experimental data, considering the wall effects. Comparisons with results obtained by other authors extended the validation of the correlation obtained to a wider range of modified Reynolds numbers (1 × 10−4 ≤ M(1 − ε)/Re ≤ 1) and to different screen mesh sizes. The correlation has been found to work for annular and circular cross-section beds.

Solar energy is an economical alternative to the today's energy demand. Solar air heater is used for heating the air economically but produces low thermal efficiency. In this paper, an attempt has been made to study the design of solar heaters to increase the thermal efficiency. The matrix solar air heater with a wire mesh produces higher thermal efficiency over the conventional flat plate solar air heater. The evaluation of different methods for increasing efficiency of packed bed solar air heater has been done . Effect of different parameters on thermal efficiency of solar heater has also been studied.
