Sudden oak death, caused by Phytophthora ramorum (1,2), has been found for the first time in Oregon, killing tanoak, Lithocarpus densiflorus, trees. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the disease outside of the San Francisco to Monterey area in California, (300 km to the south). Nine areas of infestation, all within a 24-km2 area, were discovered on forest lands near Brookings, in southwest Oregon. Mortality centers ranged in size from 0.2 to 4.5 ha and included 5 to approximately 40 diseased trees. P. ramorum was isolated from stem cankers using Phytophthora-selective medium. Isolates had distinctive morphological features characteristic of P. ramorum, including abundant production of chlamydospores and caducous, semipapillate sporangia on solid media. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of isolates of P. ramorum from Oregon were identical to ITS sequences of isolates from California (1). The pathogen also was isolated from necrotic lesions on leaves and stems of native Rhododendron macrophyllum and Vaccinium ovatum growing beneath diseased tanoaks. In July 2001, the disease was located by an aerial survey conducted cooperatively by the USDA Forest Service and Oregon Department of Forestry. All lands within 1.6 km (1 mile) of the mortality centers are subject to Oregon quarantine, which bars the transport of any host plant materials. An eradication effort is currently underway. Symptomatic plants and all known host plants within 15 to 30 m of symptomatic plants are being cut and burned in the first phase of this operation. The total treated area is approximately 16 ha. Since 2001, Oregon nurseries, Christmas tree plantations, and other sites have been surveyed for the federally regulated pathogen Phytophthora ramorum. Host plants at each site were visually surveyed for disease symptoms and symptomatic tissues tested in the laboratory by isolation onto a selective medium and by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. In 2002 and 2003, we detected PCRpositive plants that later proved to be infected with another Phytophthora, suggesting there are limitations to the PCR assay tested. In 2003, P. ramorum was detected for the first time in Viburnum, Pieris, Rhododendron, and Camellia plants in six nurseries. All infected and neighboring plant materials were destroyed by incineration and the nurseries and surrounding environs subsequently surveyed for the pathogen. Phytophthora ramorum was not detected, indicating the pathogen was successfully eradicated. Accepted for publication 10 February 2004. Published 9 March 2004.

The article considers the problem of improving the range of confectionery from the standpoint of use plant materials of satisfaction by consumer demand in dieteticpreventive foods. The analysis of domestic and foreign scientific literature on promising directions of improving the range of dietetic-preventive confectionery is given. It is noted that in the recipes for flour confectionery introduced from non-traditional raw materials containing dietary fiber.

The Bio-efficacy of eleven plant extracts namely viz.Neem Kernel; Rhizome of Ginger; Leaves of Datura, Gajarghas, Harsingar, Oak and Latjeera; Bulb of Garlic and Onion; Flowers of Chrysenthemum and Fruits of Chilli in the concentration of 5 percent and imidacloprid @ 40 g ai/ha was tested against mustard aphid, Lipaphiserysimi and their effect on D. rapae and Coccinellid beetle were tested in the Department of Entomology, College of Agriculture, Gwalior (M.P.). All the tested plant materials and imidacloprid @ 40 g ai/ha were effective significanty in reducing the aphid population over control.The aphid population in treated plots ranged from 7.2 to 40.0 as against 85.4 aphid/twig in untreated control. Among the plant material, three sprays of Neem Kernel were found most effective followed by three sprays of chilli fruits.All the plant extracts were found significantly safer to D. rapae and coccinellid bettle in comparision to insecticide (imidacloprid).

The use of maize waste plant materials (stem, leaf, and husk cover) have high economic value to be processed become organic fertilizer for agricultural land fertilizer. Maize have several and quite high contents of macro and micro nutrients. This activity was hoped that the farmers can overcome the increasing price of inorganic fertilizer recently and furthermore farmers can reap higher income. Beside higher income the use of organic fertilizer can improve the nature and behaviourof land through improving of soil chemical, soil physical, and soil microorganism. Therefore, the appropriate technology for processing of maize become organic fertilizer is very important to be diffused or socialized to farmers.Keywords: fertilizer, maize waste

Abstrak Tumbuhan obat merupakan tumbuhan yang menghasilkan satu atau lebih komponen aktif yang dipercaya oleh penduduk berkhasiat obat sehingga dimanfaatkan dalam pengobatan tradisional. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengkaji spesies tumbuhan yang digunakan sebagai obat tradisional oleh Etnis Sangihe di Kepulauan Sangihe bagian Selatan, Sulawesi Utara. Pengambilan data dilakukan melalui wawancara terstruktur  yang diajukan kepada pengobat tradisional. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya 38 spesies dari 25 famili tumbuhan yang dimanfaatkan sebagai tumbuhan obat oleh Etnis Sangihe bagian Selatan. Herba merupakan habitus tumbuhan yang banyak dimanfaatkan untuk bahan pengobatan. Bagian tumbuhan yang paling banyak digunakan sebagai obat yaitu daun. Cara pengolahan yang paling banyak digunakan adalah direbus. Jenis penyakit yang dapat diobati dengan tumbuhan obat sebanyak 22 jenis penyakit. Kata kunci: tumbuhan obat, obat tradisional, habitus, Kepulauan Sangihe Bagian Selatan Abstract             Medicinal plants are plants that produce one or more active components that are believed by local people as medicinal plants for traditional medicine practices. This study aimed to identify and to assess the plant species that used as traditional medicine by the Sangihe Ethnic in the Southern Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi. Data collection was conducted by structured interviews to the indigenous medical practitioners. The results showed that 38 plant species from 25 plant families were used as medicinal plants by the Southern Sangihe Ethnic people. Herbs were plant habitus that were widely used for medicinal ingredients. The leaves were widely used as medicinal plant materials. Boiling was the most processing method for preparing medicinal herbs. There were 22 types of diseases that could be treated using medicinal plants.
