1-Hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrophosphinoline 1-oxide (2a) was converted via the corresponding acid chloride (2b) into the 1-vinylphosphine oxide (3) which underwent a Michael-like addition with dimethylamine to give 1-(2'-dimethylaminoethyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrophosphinoline 1-oxide (6). The successive reduction of (6) with trichlorosilane, and oxidation with sulphur afforded the phosphine sulphide (7). The reaction of 1-vinyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrophosphinoline 1-oxide (3) with N-bromosuccinimide followed by treatment with dimethylformamide gave 1-vinyl-1,2-dihydrophosphinoline 1-oxide which, under mild conditions, underwent Michael-like addition of amines to the vinyl group to give, for example, 1-(2'-propylaminoethy1)-1,2-dihydrophosphinoline 1-oxide. When heated in a sealed tube at 140-150° in water for 60 h this amine was converted into 4-propyl-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexa- hydro-1,5-methano-4,1-benzazaphosphocine 1-oxide. Several related tricyclic compounds including the corresponding phosphines and phosphine sulphides were synthesized. Several of the new aminophosphorus compounds were tested for analgesic activity.

Abstract Background: Malaria has been one of the major public health problems in Ethiopia for decades. Recent reports from different part of the country showed that the trend of malaria is declining. However, there is a need for periodic assessing the trend of malaria in different malaria endemic areas of the country as part of the planed malaria elimination strategies. Methods: Ten years retrospective data of blood film examination was collected from the laboratory registration book and monthly report of Ogolcho health center and analyzed to assess the trend of malaria prevalence in Ziway dugda distric, one of the malaria endemic areas in Arsi zone, Ethiopia. Result: From the total of 38,094 malaria suspected patients, 4,863(12.8%) patients were malaria positive microscopically, with 3,301(67.9%) P.vivax, 1545(31.8%) P.falciparum and 17(0.35%) mixed infection. There was a fluctuating trend of malaria within the last ten years, with annual total cases of malaria ranged from 1685 in 2013 to 103 in 2020 and there was successive reduction in malaria prevalence from 2013 onwards. Conclusion: Trend of malaria was declining in Ziway dugda district with shift in dominancy of the circulating species (P.vivax).

Classification of van der Pol-type equations with respect to admitted approximate transformation groups transforming a small parameter is given. It is shown that approximate symmetries transforming the small parameter as well as the usual approximate symmetries can be used for approximate integration (e.g., by method of successive reduction of order) of ordinary differential equations with a small parameter.

AbstractSynthesis of Au, Ag monometallic, and Au-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles have been synthesized by successive reduction of metal salts with ascorbic acid on prefabricated seeds in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16H33)N(CH3)3Br (CTAB), as a cationic surfactant, is presented in this paper. This coverage method for the prefabricated seeds is uniform, although in some cases deviations from a spherical shape are observed with the formation of nanorods or nanoprisms. Results using high-resolution STEM-XEDS elemental mapping suggest that the actual distribution of the two metals within the multilayer spheres may involve partial alloying of the metals.

5-oxo-4,5-secocholestan-4-oic acid methyl ester (XIIIb) was converted into the corresponding cyclic ethylene acetal (XIVb) which, upon successive reduction with lithium aluminium hydride and acid hydrolysis, gave 4-hydroxy-4,5-secochol-estan-5-one (XVa), converted into the tosyl ester (XVb). Base-catalysed intra-molecular alkylation of the latter gave mainly A-homo-4a-oxacholest-5-ene (XVII), together with 4,5-seco-4,6-cyclo-6β-cholestan-5-one (IIIc), reduced with lithium aluminium hydride to 4,5-seco--1,6-cyclo-6β-cholestan-5α-ol (IIb). This was identical with material previously prepared by transformation of 4,5-seco-4,6-cyclo-6β-cholestane-3β,5α-diol (IIa), obtained from reductive rearrangement of 6β-bromo-4β,5-epoxy-5,β-cholestan-3β-ol (I). Some other approaches to the synthesis of 4,5-seco-4,6-cyolo-6β- cholestane derivatives are described.
