First-hand cigarette smoking is known to result in adverse health effects in adults, influencing wellbeing physically and mentally. The most prevalent physical consequences are cardiovascular diseases, cancer of the throat and oral cavities, diseases of the bowel, eye, respiratory system, and reproductive system. Arguably, direct effects of tobacco smoking have been said to affect mental aspects of wellbeing such as depression, mood, and anxiety disorders. Undoubtedly smoking comes with many negative effects, but with implementation of smoking cessation strategies, it is possible to strengthen the overall health and wellbeing of smokers. As such, Health Canada recognizes the many health benefits associated with smoking cessation, by delivering health-promoting campaigns that strongly urge, it is not too late to quit.

The initial value problem of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations is explained. Leray’s classic study of it (using Picard iteration) is simplified and described in the language of physics. The ideas of Lebesgue and Sobolev norms are explained. The L2 norm being the energy, cannot increase. This gives sufficient control to establish existence, regularity and uniqueness in two-dimensional flow. The L3 norm is not guaranteed to decrease, so this strategy fails in three dimensions. Leray’s proof of regularity for a finite time is outlined. His attempts to construct a scale-invariant singular solution, and modern work showing this is impossible, are then explained. The physical consequences of a negative answer to the regularity of Navier–Stokes solutions are explained. This chapter is meant as an introduction, for physicists, to a difficult field of analysis.

Attempts to optimize monitoring of brace adherence prescribed to adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (IS) have generally relied on sensors. Sensors, however, are intrusive and do not allow the assessment of psychological and physical consequences of brace use that might underlie poor adherence. Mobile applications have emerged as alternatives to monitor brace compliance. However, the feasibility and utility of these app-based systems to assess key psychological and physical domains associated with non-adherence remain unexplored. This feasibility study aims to test the usability, acceptability, and clinical utility of an app-based system that monitors brace use and related psychological and physical factors. Forty adolescents with IS daily respond to the app for 90 days. The patient responses may generate clinical alarms (e.g., brace non-adherence, discomfort, or distress) that will be sent daily to the medical team. Primary outcomes will be app usability, acceptability, and response rates. Secondary outcomes will include brace adherence, the number of side effects reported, number and type of clinical alarms, stress, quality of life, perceived health status, and mood. If accepted by patients and clinicians, apps may allow rapid detection and response to undesired events in adolescents undergoing brace treatment.

Abstract We construct a generalisation of the three-dimensional Poincaré algebra that also includes a colour symmetry factor. This algebra can be used to define coloured Poincaré gravity in three space-time dimensions as well as to study generalisations of massive and massless free particle models. We present various such generalised particle models that differ in which orbits of the coloured Poincaré symmetry are described. Our approach can be seen as a stepping stone towards the description of particles interacting with a non-abelian background field or as a starting point for a worldline formulation of an associated quantum field theory.

Based on a non-Abelian generalization of electric–magnetic duality, the Dualized Standard Model (DSM) suggests a natural explanation for exactly three generations of fermions as the "dual colour" [Formula: see text] symmetry broken in a particular manner. The resulting scheme then offers on the one hand a fermion mass hierarchy and a perturbative method for calculating the mass and mixing parameters of the Standard Model fermions, and on the other hand testable predictions for new phenomena ranging from rare meson decays to ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Calculations to one-loop order gives, at the cost of adjusting only three real parameters, values for the following quantities all (except one) in very good agreement with experiment: the quark CKM matrix elements ‖Vrs‖, the lepton CKM matrix elements ‖Urs‖, and the second generation masses mc, ms, mμ. This means, in particular, that it gives near maximal mixing Uμ3 between νμ and ντ as observed by SuperKamiokande, Kamiokande and Soudan, while keeping small the corresponding quark angles Vcb, Vts. In addition, the scheme gives (i) rough order-of-magnitude estimates for the masses of the lowest generation, (ii) predictions for low energy FCNC effects such as KL→ eμ, and (iii) a possible explanation for the long-standing puzzle of air showers beyond the GZK cut-off. All these together, however, still represent but a portion of the possible physical consequences derivable from the DSM scheme, the majority of which are yet to be explored.

Abstract Background As the COronaVIrus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to unfold, drastic changes in daily life pose significant challenges on mental and clinical health. While public health interventions such as national lockdowns and social distancing are enforced to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the psychosocial and physical consequences have yet to be determined that may disproportionately affect people living with HIV (PLWH). Methods To evaluate the impact of COVID-related stress on mental and clinical health, we conducted a 20-minute questionnaire eliciting sociodemographic information, clinical and psychological factors from people living in Miami, Fl. All individuals >18 years with or without a history of COVID-19 were included. Participating PLWH were recruited from an existing HIV registry and HIV uninfected participants from community flyers and word of mouth. Results A total of 135 participants were recruited from 05/2020-06/2020. The mean age was 50 years old, 73/135 (54%) were female, and 102/135 (75%) were PLWH. Among participating PLWH, 60/102 (58.8%) self-identified as African American, and 9/102 (8.8%) were positive for COVID-19 by a commercially approved test. Among HIV-negative participants, 15/33 (45.5%) self-identified as White and 11/33 (33%) were positive for COVID-19. Both PLWH and HIV-negative participants described significant disruptions in health care access (47%), difficulty paying basic needs (41%), and feelings of anxiety and depression (48%); there was no statistically significant difference by HIV status. However, HIV negative participants were less likely to experience job loss and income disruption compared to PLWH during the pandemic (70% for HIV-negative vs 48% for PLWH; OR 0.40, p=0.03). Conclusion The impact of COVID-19 on emotional and clinical health is significant in both PLWH and HIV-negative groups. These findings highlight the need for providing mental and physical health care during the pandemic, especially for coping with stress and anxiety during these difficult times and ensuring adequate access to health care.
