Activists have exposed startling forms of labor exploitation and environmental degradation in global industries, leading many large retailers and brands to adopt standards for fairness and sustainability. This book is about the idea that transnational corporations can push these rules through their global supply chains, and in effect, pull factories, forests, and farms out of their local contexts and up to global best practices. For many scholars and practitioners, this kind of private regulation and global standard-setting can provide an alternative to regulation by territorially bound, gridlocked, or incapacitated nation states, potentially improving environments and working conditions around the world and protecting the rights of exploited workers, impoverished farmers, and marginalized communities. But can private, voluntary rules actually create meaningful forms of regulation? Are forests and factories around the world being made into sustainable ecosystems and decent workplaces? Can global norms remake local orders? This book provides striking new answers by comparing the private regulation of land and labor in democratic and authoritarian settings. Case studies of sustainable forestry and fair labor standards in Indonesia and China show not only how transnational standards are implemented “on the ground” but also how they are constrained and reconfigured by domestic governance. Combining rich multi-method analyses, a powerful comparative approach, and a new theory of private regulation, this book reveals the contours and contradictions of transnational governance.

Marginalized communities around the world are disproportionately impacted by the distribution of unjust infrastructure and environmental conditions. However, through distributive, procedural, and restorative frameworks, it is possible to teach spatial designers to challenge, inform, and reshape the world toward a more just and equitable future. This chapter delves into the various themes developed as part of the “Spatial Justice” professional elective at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, which offers an interdisciplinary perspective on urban studies, urban design, and the roles that social, environmental, and ecological justice play in designing a more just and equitable urbanity. In this course, students explore critical urban theory, justice, counter cartographies, design activism, participatory systems, and spatial agency using alternative mapping methodologies to render legible latent sociospatial asymmetries.

Belize has one of the highest homicide rates in the world; however, the gangs at the heart of this violence have rarely been studied. Using a masculinities lens and original empirical data, this article explores how Blood and Crip “gang transnationalism” from the United States of America flourished in Belize City. Gang transnationalism is understood as a “transnational masculinity” that makes cultural connections between local settings of urban exclusion. On one hand, social terrains in Belize City generated masculine vulnerabilities to the foreign gang as an identity package with the power to reconfigure positions of subordination; on the other, the establishment of male gang practices with a distinct hegemonic shape, galvanized violence and a patriarchy of the streets in already marginalized communities. This article adds a new body of work on gangs in Belize, and gang transnationalism, whilst contributing to theoretical discussions around the global to local dynamics of hegemonic masculinities discussed by Connell and Messerschmidt (2005) and Messerschmidt (2018).

When rich countries opened up access to information and communication technology (ICT) for all types of people and countries around the world several decades ago, it was not clear to developing nations that it could transform the cultural fabric of their fragile communities and impact the economic aspirations of young people in those countries. The imbalance in cash flows between users of ICT in industrialized regions and those in poor regions, especially marginalized communities and youth cannot be compared to the general frequency of the use of, particularly social media gadgets. However, it is thought that young people aged (many 18-35) in both regions rely on social media to communicate their raw emotions (rage, love, worries and sympathies) and their political views or share data on socio-politcal and economic flaws in their national governments . In poor countries, many young people now have access to Android phones. However, it is not clear whether their use of such technology is preventing them from following their local customs or advancing the drive to compete for opportunities in the world. The study seeks to know which one of the devices was more likely to promote their understanding of and participation in the globalization process, i-phones or the internet. It examined whether the ‘internal socialization,' ‘inter—extra personal socialization’ or ‘personal advancement’ is the primary reason for ownership of the devices. Some respondents in four communities (2 cities and two rural areas) in Cameroon and S. Africa will be randomly sampled using open and close-ended questions accessible in 6 internet cafes and on the streets, and cross-analyzed. The study is expected to show a heavier use of i-phones and reliance on ‘foreign news and entertainment content’ by rural residents compared to urban populations. The study expects that results might help non-profit organizations involved with strengthening indigenous communities and foreign businesses in packaging and disseminating messages tailored for the targeted group.

COVID-19 has shown the world that public policies tend to benefit the most privileged among us, and innovation policy is no exception. While the US government’s approach to innovation—research funding and patent policies and programs that value scientists’ and private sector freedoms—has been copied around the world due to its apparent success, I argue that it has hurt poor and marginalized communities. It has limited our understanding of health disparities and how to address them, and hampered access to essential technologies due to both lack of coordination and high cost. Fair and equal treatment of vulnerable citizens requires sensitive and dedicated policies that attend explicitly to the fact that the benefits of innovation do not simply trickle down.

The career of the English "creative" dancer, choreographer, teacher, and dance writer Penelope Spencer spanned the period between the World Wars. Spencer’s versatile training and career encompassed diverse British theater genres, including ballet, drama, mime, modern dance, musical comedy, opera, pantomime, and revue. She practiced consecutively as a freelance artist and under the auspices of enlightened cultural institutions, including the Arts Theatre Club, British Broadcasting Corporation, British National Opera Company, Camargo Society, Glastonbury Festival, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and Royal College of Music. Her published articles explored the relationship between dance and music, the importance of dance to actors and musicians, and dance as a collaborative art form, promoting the Wagnerian concept of Gesamtkunstwerk. During the interwar period, Spencer made significant and pioneering contributions to British theater dance and wider cultural heritage, while incorporating progressive philosophies into her choreography and teaching.


The article substantiates a prospect of studying the world modeled by the writer in the interdisciplinary plane, that is relevant taking into the account the possibility of objective, deeply, convincing exploring the world and the person in it, based on the peculiarities of the social communities development and the individual psychology as interdependent components. Accordingly, the purpose of the proposed study is to summarize the findings of sociology, psychology in the destructive processes study that occurs in society and provokes social instability, crises both on a general social scale, and stratification instability, narrower characterization. The key concept that is under consideration is the concept of "asocial behavior". The specificity of its origin: causes, consequences, reactivity (deviant and socium) are highlighted and commented on. Also relevant concepts are society, strata, stratification, marginality, deviance, each of them has been analyzed taking into account the multiplicity of existing definitions. The conclusion about the unified use of these concepts in the literary research has been made. In particular, society we understand as a holistic system that includes a set of human activity forms and an association of a certain type – execution; a stratification (differentiation) – it`s a process of stratification of the population, its division into layers, classes; a deviance – its deviations caused by individual, social influences, circumstances; deviant behavior is a special way of positioning oneself in a society that contradicts the established rules and entails negative consequences for the individual as well as for the whole society. Also marginal (people who are on the border of the opposite social groups) as a special stratum of society have been identified and characterized. Out of the marginalized communities, beggars, thieves, and murderers are singled out. The objective and subjective factors of the corresponding marginalization have been included and the environmental impact has been justified. Theoretical observations made using the review-theoretical methodology have become a necessary basis for the delineating the marginal space of some of Franko's epic works, for conclusion it is necessary to deepen the objectivity of studying such a space to use the achievements of the biographical method and scientific boundaries.

There is a large and growing literature on communal interpretive resources: the concepts, theories, narratives, and so on that a community draws on in interpreting its members and their world. (They're also called “hermeneutical resources” in some places and “epistemic resources” in others.) Several recent contributions to this literature have concerned dominant and resistant interpretive resources and how they affect concrete lived interactions. In this article, I note that “using” interpretive resources—applying them to parts of the world in conversation with others—is “a rule‐governed activity”; and I propose that in oppressive systems, these rules are influenced by the rules of oppression. Section I clarifies some rules governing the use of resources. Section II draws on work by Gaile Pohlhaus, Jr. and others to suggest that according to the present rules of our oppressive system, it is permissible for dominantly situated speakers to dismiss interpretive resources developed in marginalized communities. Section III appeals to Charles Mills's work on White ignorance to propose, further, that our system's rules make it impermissible and deserving of punishment to use resistant resources. The conclusion enumerates several further points about such rules governing the use of interpretive resources, their social effects, and some philosophical literatures.
