Noise generated by railway wagons in operation is produced by large numbers of noise sources. Although the railway transport is considered to be environmental friendly, especially in production of CO2 emissions, noise is one of problems that should be solved to keep the railway transport competitive and sustainable in future. In the EU, there is a strong permanent legislation pressure on interior and exterior noise reduction in railway transport. In the last years in Slovakia, besides modernization of existing passenger wagons fleet as a cheaper option of transport quality improvement, quite a number of coaches have been newly manufactured, too. The new design is usually aimed at increased speed, higher travel comfort, in which reduction of noise levels is expected. However, not always the new designs meet all expectations. Noise generation and propagation is a complex system and should be treated such from the beginning. There are possibilities to simulate the structural natural frequencies to predict vibrations and sound generated by these vibrations. However, the real picture about sound fields can be obtained only by practical measurements. Simulations of the wagon’s natural frequencies and mode shapes and measurements in real operation using a digital acoustic camera Soundcam have been done, which showed that for the calculated speeds the largest share of noise from the chassis was not radiated through the floor of the wagon, as was expected, but through the ceiling of the wagon. To improve the acoustic properties of the wagon at higher speed, it was proposed to use high-volume textile insulation in the ceiling of the wagon. The paper briefly presents modern research approaches in the search for ways to reduce internal noise in selected wagons used in normal operation on the Slovak railways.

This work describes the field testing process of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver under 220KV, 500KV UHV transmission line and standard calibration field. Analysis for GNSS data results shows that the radio interference generated by EHV transmission lines have no effect on GNSS receiver internal noise levels and valid GNSS observation rate. Within 50 meters of the EHV transmission lines, the multi-path effects (mp1 and mp2 value) significantly exceeded the normal range and becomes larger with the increase of the voltage .outside 50 meters of the EHV transmission line, the multi-path effects have almost no effect on the high-precision GNSS observations.

Aim: This study aimed to revisit previous findings of superior processing of motion direction in migraineurs with a more stringent direction discrimination task and to investigate whether increased internal noise can account for motion processing deficits in migraineurs. Methods: Groups of 13 migraineurs (4 with aura, 9 without aura) and 15 headache-free controls completed three psychophysical tasks: one detecting coherence in a motion stimulus, one discriminating the spiral angle in a glass pattern and another discriminating the spiral angle in a global-motion task. Internal noise estimates were obtained for all tasks using an N-pass method. Results: Consistent with previous research, migraineurs had higher motion coherence thresholds than controls. However, there were no significant performance differences on the spiral global-motion and global-form tasks. There was no significant group difference in internal noise estimates associated with any of the tasks. Conclusions: The results from this study suggest that variation in internal noise levels is not the mechanism driving motion coherence threshold differences in migraine. Rather, we argue that motion processing deficits may result from cortical changes leading to less efficient extraction of global-motion signals from noise.

Abstract This paper addresses the issue of quantifying the internal noise levels/wall pressure fluctuations in industrial gas pipelines. This quantification of internal noise levels/wall pressure fluctuations allows for external noise radiation from pipelines to be specified in absolute levels via appropriate noise prediction models. Semi-empirical prediction models based upon (i) estimated vibration levels and radiation ratios, (ii) semi-empirical transmission loss models, and (iii) statistical energy analysis models have already been reported on by Norton and Pruiti 1,3 and are not reported on here.

Maximising cross ventilation is a low energy method of naturally ventilating and providing heating and cooling to deep plan spaces. Significant reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases can be achieved through minimising the use of mechanical systems in regions with climatic conditions that support the use of natural ventilation. Arup has provided input into the design of a louvered facade for the control of external noise for Brisbane Domestic Airport. A full scale prototype facade was constructed and noise transmission loss measurements were undertaken. The results indicate that significant noise reduction can be achieved to enable compliance with the internal noise limits for airport terminals, whilst using natural ventilation. The findings from this research will directly benefit building designers and innovators in the pursuit of achieving sustainable building design.

The Bayesian model of confidence posits that confidence reflects the observer's posterior probability that the decision is correct. Hangya, Sanders, and Kepecs ( 2016 ) have proposed that researchers can test the Bayesian model by deriving qualitative signatures of Bayesian confidence (i.e., patterns that one would expect to see if an observer were Bayesian) and looking for those signatures in human or animal data. We examine two proposed signatures, showing that their derivations contain hidden assumptions that limit their applicability and that they are neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for Bayesian confidence. One signature is an average confidence of 0.75 on trials with neutral evidence. This signature holds only when class-conditioned stimulus distributions do not overlap and when internal noise is very low. Another signature is that as stimulus magnitude increases, confidence increases on correct trials but decreases on incorrect trials. This divergence signature holds only when stimulus distributions do not overlap or when noise is high. Navajas et al. ( 2017 ) have proposed an alternative form of this signature; we find no indication that this alternative form is expected under Bayesian confidence. Our observations give us pause about the usefulness of the qualitative signatures of Bayesian confidence. To determine the nature of the computations underlying confidence reports, there may be no shortcut to quantitative model comparison.
