The article presents the results of studies to identify possible intravital markers of bone metabolism in fast-growing meat crosses. As a result of the research it was determined that the introduction of mineral components containing calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and silicon into the feed of broiler chickens on the background of the diet balanced in biologically active substances helps to activate the processes of biological synthesis in bone tissue, normalize its mineral component with a high degree of silicon assimilation and also increases the stability of the bones of the lower limbs of broiler chickens. It has been proved that in order to monitor the prevention and treatment of dyschondroplasia in meat poultry, it is necessary to use in vivo biochemical markers of bone tissue metabolism, which allow carrying out early and accurate diagnosis of bone diseases in poultry.

The clinical usefulness of the urinary excretion of three bone resorption markers is compared in patients after renal transplantation and in tumour patients with and without bone metastases. The markers were the 3-hydroxypyridinium derivatives pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline (pyridinium cross-links; measured by a polyclonal enzyme immunoassay), the cross-linked N-telopeptid-to-helix domain of type I collagen and the destruction products of type I collagen metabolism cross-reacting with a peptide sequence of the α1-chain of the C-terminal telopeptide region of type I collagen (CrossLaps™). In patients receiving renal transplantation the discriminating power of N-telopeptides was superior to that of pyridinium cross-links and CrossLaps™, with Z scores (number of SDs from apparently healthy controls) of 6·61, 2·17 and 1·35, respectively. However, the pyridinium cross-links were the only markers for bone resorption which showed a significant increase with time ( P < 0·001). Receiver operating-characteristic analysis for discriminating patients with bone metastases from those without revealed that the accuracy was 0·81 for pyridinium cross-links, 0·76 for the N-telopeptides and 0·61 for CrossLaps™. The discriminating power for patients with bone metastases was higher for pyridinium cross-links and N-telopeptides than for CrossLaps™, with Z scores (number of SDs from patients without bone metastases) of 4·38, 3·00 and 1·24, respectively. Linear correlation coefficients for the different markers were between + 0·35 and + 0·65 in patients receiving renal transplants, and between + 0·58 and + 0·84 in patients with bone metastases. In conclusion, in patients with metabolic and malignant bone diseases there are marked differences in the diagnostic performance of different biochemical markers of bone resorption. It is suggested that this may reflect the different facets of bone resorption or the different metabolic fates of the marker substances examined.

A simple model for the study of bone calcium metabolism is proposed. It describes the kinetics of a radioactive tracer in terms of an open single compartment system with an expanding volume for a finite period of time. In addition to the simplicity of the hypotheses introduced, the model is able to give a good description of the biological processes which regulate calcium kinetics. Moreover the functional parameters can be easily calculated, even just graphically. 15 normal subjects and 22 patients affected by various bone diseases were studied. The results were compared with those obtained by using the model proposed by Burkinshaw et al. and the method described by Reeve et al.

The development of atherosclerosis is closely related to the calcification of the vessel intima and fibrous plaques, being a complex and multifactorial process, in which the markers of bone formation and resorption play an important role. Objective. To study the biochemical markers of bone metabolism in men with stable coronary heart disease (CHD). Material and methods. The study included 102 men with verified CHD. Data were evaluated by densitometry, coronary angiography, multispiral computed tomography, color duplex scanning of brachiocephalic arteries, serum lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides [TG], high-density [LHD] and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), concentrationsin the blood of osteocalcin (OC), bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), cathepsin K and C-telopeptides (CTx). Results. Concentrations of BAP, cathepsin K and CTx in patients with CHD were significantly higher than in men without CHD. The concentration of OC in men with normal bone mineral density was significantly lower than in patients with osteopenic syndrome. There was a direct correlation between OC and antiatherogenic HDL cholesterol and the inverse correlation between OC and TG, CTx and TG. There was no correlation between the level of bone remodeling markers and coronary artery (CA) lesion variant and the severity of coronary atherosclerosis on SYNTAX scale. The correlation analysis did not reveal the connection of biochemical markers of bone metabolism with the severity of coronary atherosclerosis and calcification and thickness of intima-media complex of carotid arteries. Absolute values of bone formation indices (BAP, OC) were significantly higher in patients with severe СA calcification than in patients without signs of calcification. Summary. Increased rates of osteogenesis and osteoresorption characterize the accelerated process of bone metabolism and indicate in favor of high rates of bone loss in men with CHD, which confirms the likelihood of common pathophysiological mechanisms of bone resorption and arterial calcification.
