A typhoon is a restrictive factor in the development of floating wind power in China. However, the influences of multistage typhoon wind and waves on offshore wind turbines have not yet been studied. Based on Typhoon Mangkhut, in this study, the characteristics of the motion response and structural loads of an offshore wind turbine are investigated during the travel process. For this purpose, a framework is established and verified for investigating the typhoon-induced effects of offshore wind turbines, including a multistage typhoon wave field and a coupled dynamic model of offshore wind turbines. On this basis, the motion response and structural loads of different stages are calculated and analyzed systematically. The results show that the maximum response does not exactly correspond to the maximum wave or wind stage. Considering only the maximum wave height or wind speed may underestimate the motion response during the traveling process of the typhoon, which has problems in guiding the anti-typhoon design of offshore wind turbines. In addition, the coupling motion between the floating foundation and turbine should be considered in the safety evaluation of the floating offshore wind turbine under typhoon conditions.

Abstract Air gap is pivotal to the hydrodynamic performance for the semi-submersible platform as a key characteristic for the strength assessment and safety evaluation. Considering the metocean conditions of the Norse Sea, the hydrodynamic performance of a semi-submersible platform has been analyzed. Based on the three-dimensional potential flow theory, and combined with the full QTF matrix and the second-order difference frequency loads, the nonlinear motion characteristics and the prediction for air gap have been simulated. The wave frequency motion response, the second-order nonlinear air gap response and nonlinear motion response of the platform have been analyzed. By comparing the simulation results, the air gap response of the platform considering the nonlinear motion is more intense than the results simulated by the first-order motion without considering the second-order difference frequency loads. Under the heavy metocean conditions, for the heave and pitch motion of the platform, the non-linear simulation values for some air gap points and areas are negative which means the wave slam has been occurred, but the calculation results of linear motion response indicate that the air gap above has not appeared the wave slamming areas. The simulation results present that the influence of the second-order wave loads is a critical part in the air gap prediction for the semi-submersible platform.

In 2007, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) started a technology development program called STLVAST (Small to Large Vessel At-Sea Transfer), in order to develop ‘enabling capabilities’ in the realm of logistic transfer (i.e. stores, equipment, vehicles) between a large transport vessel and a smaller T-craft ship, using a Deep Water Stable Crane (DWSC) spar between them. In this paper, the equation of motions of the single DWSC spar is initially expressed as the standard state-space model. Then the ODE solver of Matlab is directly employed to obtain the motion responses at each time step. Two levels of approximation of hydrodynamic coefficients are considered in this study. One is the Constant Coefficient Method (CCM), and the other one is the Impulse Response Function (IRF) method, with fluid memory effects considered. WAMIT software is used to calculate the hydrodynamic coefficients, including the added mass, radiation damping, IRF, the first order and second order waves loads transfer functions, etc. The motion response control is achieved by assuming the thrusters can provide the optimal feedback force derived from Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) method.

Abstract Tropospheric winds can be altered by vertical transfers of momentum due to orographic gravity waves and convection. Previous work showed that, in dry models, such zonally asymmetric torques produce a pattern of tropical ascent that is well described by linear dynamics, together with meridional shifts of the midlatitude jet. Here a series of idealized models is used to understand the effects of moisture on the tropospheric response to tropical and subtropical zonally asymmetric, upper-tropospheric torques. The vertical motion response to a torque is shown to be amplified by the reduction in effective static stability that occurs in moist convecting atmospheres. This amplification occurs only in precipitating regions, and the magnitude of subsidence in nonprecipitating regions saturates when clear-sky radiative cooling balances induced adiabatic warming. For basic states in which precipitation is concentrated in an intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), most of the vertical motion response is thus confined within the basic-state ITCZ, even when the torque is remote from the ITCZ. Tropical and subtropical torques perturb the extratropical baroclinic eddy field and the convectively coupled equatorial wave field. Resulting changes in momentum flux convergence by transient eddies induce secondary meridional overturning circulations that modify the zonal-mean response to a torque. The net effect allows tropical torques to merge a double ITCZ into a single equatorial ITCZ. The response of tropical transient eddies is highly sensitive to the representation of convection, so the zonal-mean response to a torque is similarly sensitive, even when the torque is located in the subtropics.

Tank sloshing is widely present in many engineering fields, especially in the field of marine. Due to the trend of large-scale liquid cargo ships, it is of great significance to study the coupled motion response of ships with tanks in beam waves. In this study, the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method and experiments are used to study the response of a ship with/without a tank in beam waves. All the computations are performed by an in-house CFD solver, which is used to solve RANS (Reynold Average Navier-Stokes) equations coupled with six degrees-of-freedom solid-body motion equations. The Level Set Method is used to solve the free surface. Verification work on the grid number and time step size has been conducted. The simulation results agree with the experimental results well, which shows that the numerical method is accurate enough. In this paper, several different working conditions are set up, and the effects of the liquid height in the tank, the size of the tank and the wavelength ratio of the incident wave on the ship’s motion are studied. The results show the effect of tank sloshing on the ship’s motion in different working conditions.

The LNG-FPSO concept is receiving much attention in recent years, due to its active usage to exploit oil and gas resources. The FPSO offloads LNG to an LNG carrier that is located close to the FPSO, and during this transfer process two large vessels are in close proximity to each other for daylong periods of time. Due to the presence of neighboring vessel, the motion response of both the vessels will be affected significantly. Hydrodynamic interactions related to wave effects may result in unfavorable responses or the risk of collisions in a multi-body floating system. Not only the motion behavior but also the second order drift forces are influenced by the neighboring structures due to interactions of the waves among the structures. A study is made on the time domain analysis to assess the behavior and the operational capability of the FPSO system moored in the sea having an LNG carrier alongside under environmental conditions such as waves, wind and currents. This paper presents an analysis tool to predict the dynamic motion response and non-linear connecting and mooring forces on a parallel-connected LNG-FPSO system due to non-linear exciting forces of wave, wind and current. Simulation for the mooring performance is also investigated. The three-dimensional source-sink technique has been applied to obtain the radiation forces and the transfer function of wave exciting forces on floating multi-bodies. The hydrodynamic interaction effect between the FPSO and the LNG carrier is included to calculate the hydrodynamic forces. For the simulation of a random sea and also for the generation of time depended wind velocity, a fully probabilistic simulation technique has been applied. Wind and current loads are estimated according to OCIMF. The effects of variations in wave, wind and current loads and direction on the slowly varying oscillations of the LNG and FPSO are also investigated in this paper. Finally, some conclusions are drawn based on the numerical results obtained from the present time domain simulations.
