Collected mechanical signals usually contain a number of noises, resulting in erroneous judgments of mechanical condition diagnosis. The mechanical signals, which are nonlinear or chaotic time series, have a high computational complexity and intrinsic broadband characteristic. This paper proposes a method of gear and bearing fault classification, based on the local subspace projection noise reduction and PE. A novel nonlinear projection noise reduction method, smooth orthogonal decomposition (SOD), is proposed to denoise the vibration signals of various operation conditions. SOD can decompose the reconstructed multiple strands to identify smooth local subspace. In the process of projection from a high dimension to a low dimension, a new weight matrix is put forward to achieve a better denoising effect. Afterwards, permutation entropy (PE) is applied in the detection of time sequence randomness and dynamic mutation behavior, which can effectively detect and amplify the variation of vibration signals. Hence PE can characterize the working conditions of gear and bearing under different conditions. The experimental results illustrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach. The theoretical derivations, numerical simulations and experimental studies, all confirm that the proposed approach based on the smooth local subspace projection method and PE, is promising in the field of the fault classification of rotary machinery.

Feature extraction is one of the most difficult aspects of mechanical fault diagnosis, and it is directly related to the accuracy of bearing fault diagnosis. In this study, improved permutation entropy (IPE) is defined as the feature for bearing fault diagnosis. In this method, ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), a self-adaptive time-frequency analysis method, is used to process the vibration signals, and a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) can thus be obtained. A feature extraction strategy based on statistical analysis is then presented for IPE, where the so-called optimal number of permutation entropy (PE) values used for an IPE is adaptively selected. The obtained IPE-based samples are then input to a support vector machine (SVM) model. Subsequently, a trained SVM can be constructed as the classifier for bearing fault diagnosis. Finally, experimental vibration signals are applied to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the results show that the proposed method can effectively and accurately diagnose bearing faults, such as inner race faults, outer race faults, and ball faults.

This paper presents an improved gearbox fault diagnosis approach by integrating complementary ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CEEMD) with permutation entropy (PE). The presented approach identifies faults appearing in a gearbox system based on PE values calculated from selected intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) of vibration signals decomposed by CEEMD. Specifically, CEEMD is first used to decompose vibration signals characterizing various defect severities into a series of IMFs. Then, filtered vibration signals are obtained from appropriate selection of IMFs, and correlation coefficients between the filtered signal and each IMF are used as the basis for useful IMFs selection. Subsequently, PE values of those selected IMFs are utilized as input features to a support vector machine (SVM) classifier for characterizing the defect severity of a gearbox. Case study conducted on a gearbox system indicates the effectiveness of the proposed approach for identifying the gearbox faults.

The rolling element bearings used in rotating machinery generally include multiple coexisting defects. However, individual defect–induced signals of bearings simultaneously arising from multiple defects are difficult to extract from measured vibration signals because the impulse-like fault signals are very weak, and the vibration signal is commonly affected by the transmission path and various sources of interference. This issue is addressed in this study by proposing a new compound fault feature extraction scheme. Vibration signals are first preprocessed using resonance-based signal sparse decomposition to obtain the low-resonance component of the signal, which contains the information related to the transient fault–induced impulse signals, and reduce the interference of discrete harmonic signal components and noise. The objective used for adaptively selecting the optimal resonance-based signal sparse decomposition parameters adopts the ratio of permutation entropy to the frequency domain kurtosis, as a new comprehensive index, and the optimization is conducted using the cuckoo search algorithm. Subsequently, we apply multipoint sparsity to the low-resonance component to automatically determine the possible number of impulse signals and their periods according to the peak multipoint sparsity values. This enables the targeted extraction and isolation of fault-induced impulse signal features by multipoint optimal minimum entropy deconvolution adjustment. Finally, the envelope spectrum of the filtered signal is used to identify the individual faults. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by its application to both simulated and experimental compound bearing fault vibration signals with strong interference, and its advantages are confirmed by comparisons of the results with those of an existing state-of-the-art method.

Aimed at distinguishing different fault categories of severity of rolling bearings, a novel method based on feature space reconstruction and multiscale permutation entropy is proposed in the study. Firstly, the ensemble empirical mode decomposition algorithm (EEMD) was employed to adaptively decompose the vibration signal into multiple intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), and the representative IMFs which contained rich fault information were selected to reconstruct a feature vector space. Secondly, the multiscale permutation entropy (MPE) was used to calculate the complexity of reconstructed feature space. Finally, the value of multiscale permutation entropy was presented to a support vector machine for fault classification. The proposed diagnostic algorithm was applied to three groups of rolling bearing experiments. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method has better classification performance and robustness than other traditional methods.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop an appropriate approach for detecting unbalanced fault in rotating machines using KNN and SVM classifiers. Design/methodology/approach – To fulfil this goal, a fault diagnosis approach based on signal processing, feature extraction and fault classification, was used. Vibration signals were acquired from a designed experimental system with three conditions, namely, no load, balanced load and unbalanced load. FFT technique was applied to transform the vibration signals from time-domain into frequency-domain. In total, 29 feature parameters were extracted from FFT amplitude of the signals. SVM and KNN were employed to classify the three different conditions. The performances of the two classifiers were obtained under different values of their parameter. Findings – The experimental results show the potential application of SVM for machine fault diagnosis. Practical implications – The results demonstrate that the proposed approach can be used effectively for detecting unbalanced condition in rotating machines. Originality/value – In this paper, an intelligent approach for unbalanced fault detection was proposed based on supervised learning method. Also, a performance comparison was made between KNN and SVM in fault classification. In addition, this approach gave a high level of classification accuracy. The proposed intelligent approach can be used for other mechanical faults.

This study presents a two-step fault diagnosis scheme combined with statistical classification and random forests-based classification for rolling element bearings. Considering the inequality of features sensitivity in different diagnosis steps, the proposed method utilizes permutation entropy and variational mode decomposition to depict vibration signals under single scale and multiscale. In the first step, the permutation entropy features on the single scale of original signals are extracted and the statistical classification model based on Chebyshev’s inequality is constructed to detect the faults with a preliminary acquaintance of the bearing condition. In the second step, vibration signals with fault conditions are firstly decomposed into a collection of intrinsic mode functions by using variational mode decomposition and then multiscale permutation entropy features derived from each mono-component are extracted to identify the specific fault types. In order to improve the classification ability of the characteristic data, the out-of-bag estimation of random forests is firstly employed to reelect and refine the original multiscale permutation entropy features. Then the refined features are considered as the input data to train the random forests-based classification model. Finally, the condition data of bearings with different fault conditions are employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results indicate that the proposed method can effectively identify the working conditions and fault types of rolling element bearings.
