ActiGraph is the most common accelerometer in physical activity research, but it has measurement errors due to restrictive frequency filtering. This study investigated biomechanically how different frequency filtering of accelerometer data affects assessment of activity intensity and age-group differences when measuring physical activity. Data from accelerometer at the hip and motion capture system was recorded during treadmill walking and running from 30 subjects in three different age groups: 10, 15, and >20 years old. Acceleration data was processed to ActiGraph counts with original band-pass filter at 1.66 Hz, to counts with wider filter at either 4 or 10 Hz, and to unfiltered acceleration according to “Euclidian norm minus one” (ENMO). Internal and external power, step frequency, and vertical displacement of center of mass (VD) were estimated from the motion capture data. Widening the frequency filter improved the relationship between higher locomotion speed and counts. It also removed age-group differences and decreased within-group variation. While ActiGraph counts were almost exclusively explained by VD, the counts from the 10 Hz filter were explained by VD and step frequency to an equal degree. In conclusion, a wider frequency filter improves assessment of physical activity intensity by more accurately capturing individual gait patterns.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this paper is to present the engagement of adult Poles in physical activity (PA) before and during the coronavirus pandemic, taking into consideration: frequency, duration and types of the activity depending on the gender and age of the participants. Methods: The study was conducted using an online survey questionnaire. 688 residents of Poland aged 18 to 58 (28.61±9.5) years old participated in the study. Results: A statistically significant decrease in the frequency of PA was noted in the group of men (p=0.0001) and in the age group of 39 to 58 years old. The analysis of the duration of a single PA before and during the pandemic has shown a statistically significant reduction in the workout time among both men and women and across all age groups (p=0.05). There was a statistically significant increase in the frequency of women undertaking flexibility exercises, e.g. yoga (p=0.000), as well as a decrease in marching and walks (p=0.003). Men significantly less frequently did strength exercises (p=0.002). Conclusions: During the pandemic, there was a statistically significant decrease in the frequency and duration of PA. The preferences of the participants as to the type of PA undertaken changed as well.

This study reports on age-group differences in leisure-time sport and physical activity involvement among a large sample of Canadians interviewed at 2 points during the 1980s. Comparisons are made for 5 age cohorts, for men and women, and without and with multivariate controls. The results contradict the usual finding of an inverse relationship between age and level of physical activity. On measures of (a) activity necessary to produce health benefits and (b) energy expenditure. Canadians over 65 were as active as, or more active than, their younger counterparts, and their activities did not decline over the 7 years between interviews. The extent of change varied by age and across women and men. Among women, increases in involvement were greatest in the middle-aged. Among men, the greatest increase was in the oldest age groups. For both genders, the youngest age cohort showed the smallest change over time, and there was evidence of slight declines in activity levels among young men.

Abstract Background Women living in rural areas face unique challenges in achieving a heart-healthy lifestyle that are related to multiple levels of the social-ecological framework. The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in diet and physical activity, which are secondary outcomes of a community-based, multilevel cardiovascular disease risk reduction intervention designed for women in rural communities. Methods Strong Hearts, Healthy Communities was a six-month, community-randomized trial conducted in 16 rural towns in Montana and New York, USA. Sedentary women aged 40 and older with overweight and obesity were recruited. Intervention participants (eight towns) attended twice weekly exercise and nutrition classes for 24 weeks (48 total). Individual-level components included aerobic exercise, progressive strength training, and healthy eating practices; a civic engagement component was designed to address social and built environment factors to support healthy lifestyles. The control group (eight towns) attended didactic healthy lifestyle classes monthly (six total). Dietary and physical activity data were collected at baseline and post-intervention. Dietary data were collected using automated self-administered 24-h dietary recalls, and physical activity data were collected by accelerometry and self-report. Data were analyzed using multilevel linear regression models with town as a random effect. Results At baseline, both groups fell short of meeting many recommendations for cardiovascular health. Compared to the control group, the intervention group realized significant improvements in intake of fruit and vegetables combined (difference: 0.6 cup equivalents per day, 95% CI 0.1 to 1.1, p = .026) and in vegetables alone (difference: 0.3 cup equivalents per day, 95% CI 0.1 to 0.6, p = .016). For physical activity, there were no statistically significant between-group differences based on accelerometry. By self-report, the intervention group experienced a greater increase in walking MET minutes per week (difference: 113.5 MET-minutes per week, 95% CI 12.8 to 214.2, p = .027). Conclusions Between-group differences in dietary and physical activity behaviors measured in this study were minimal. Future studies should consider how to bolster behavioral outcomes in rural settings and may also continue to explore the value of components designed to enact social and environmental change. AbstractObjectiveThe purpose of the present study was to analyse the lipid profile in men and women differentiated according to energy expenditure during sports participation (EESPORT), energy expenditure during active leisure time (EEALT) and overall energy expenditure (EETOTAL).DesignThe subjects were grouped by sex, age, EESPORT, EEALT and EETOTAL. Group differences were analysed using analyses of covariance with BMI and alcohol consumption as covariates.SettingPhysical activity was assessed using the Flemish Physical Activity Computerised Questionnaire. Fasting blood samples were taken to measure total cholesterol (TC), TAG, HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and the ratio TC:HDL-C.SubjectsThe study sample consisted of 1170 Flemish men and women between 18 and 75 years of age.ResultsDifferences in lipid profile were observed in the younger age group (<45 years), all in favour of the most active group. More specifically, when differentiating by EEALT and EETOTAL, men had a healthier lipid profile for TAG, HDL-C and TC:HDL-C. Differentiation according to EESPORT revealed the same significant results except for TAG. In women significant results for HDL-C, LDL-C and TC:HDL-C were found when differentiated by EESPORT.ConclusionsMen and women <45 years of age with higher levels of energy expenditure due to sport show a better lipid profile than their sedentary counterparts. When differentiating subjects according to energy expenditure during active leisure time or overall energy expenditure, only in men was a healthier lipid profile observed in favour of the most active subjects.

Cardiovascular disease is the most important health issue facing mankind and continues to be major cause of morbidity and mortality.Women are disproportionately affected by coronary artery disease(CAD) compared with men.There are different clinical presentations of heart disease and acute myocardial infarction in women than in men.Also different studies shows that there is difference in the major cardiovascular risk factors amongst men and women at younger age.The present study was undertaken with a view to understand the clinical prole of acute myocardial infarction in women and observe the variations in acute myocardial infarction between men and women. Materials and methods-This observational and analytical study includes 118 female cases of acute myocardial infarction admitted to ICCU and randomly selected 118 male cases of acute myocardial infarction admitted to ICCU during the same tenure.Various necessary th investigations were carried out and risk factors of acute myocardial infarction were determined.All the cases were followed up on the 7 day of admission and one month after discharge from the hospital for various complications.Data thus collected was analysed at the end of study. Results-Maximum number of female cases were in age group 60-69 years(45.6%)while maximum number of male cases were in age group 50- 59 years(33.05%).Anterior wall myocardial infarction was the commonest type of acute myocardial infarction in both groups.ST elevation myocardial infarction was more common in males(94.9%)as compared to females(83.89%) whereas non ST elevation myocardial infarction was common in females(10%) as compared to males (5%).Atypical chest pain was more common in female cases(50.8%)whereas typical chest pain was more common with male cases(52.4%).Also dyspnoea as presenting symptom was signicantly more in female cases(51.6%)as compared to male cases(20.3%).Among the risk factors as Diabetes mellitus,signicant difference was observed in female(45.7%) vs male cases(30.5%).Other risk factors like lack of physical activity was signicantly more in female cases(84.7%) as compared to male cases(50%).Central obesity and family history of CAD were more common in female cases . 42(35.6%) female cases had arrthymias during hospital stay as compared to 50(42.4%) male cases.Post MI angina was present in 21 (20.38%) female cases and 12(11.11%) male cases during one month follow up.Mortality was more common in female cases(12.7%) compared with the male cases(8.47%)but it was not statistically signicant. Females suffer from coronary artery disease slightly at older age Conclusions- as compared to males.Atypical chest pain and dyspnoea are more common presenting symptoms in females compared to males.Diabetes mellitus,central obesity, lack of physical activity and family history of CAD are most common risk factors in female cases for acute myocardial infarction.ST elevation myocardial infarction is less common in females as compared to males.Complications like congestive cardiac failure ,arrthymias are more common in females as compared to males.The overall mortality with acute myocardial infarction are common in females than males.
