Anthropogenic noise can negatively impact many taxa worldwide. It is possible that in noisy, high-disturbance environments, the range and severity of impacts could diminish over time, but the influence of previous disturbance remains untested in natural conditions. This study demonstrates the effects of motorboat noise on the physiology of an endemic cichlid fish in Lake Malawi. Exposure to motorboats (driven 20–100 m from fish) and loudspeaker playback of motorboat noise both elevated the oxygen-consumption rate at a single lower-disturbance site, characterized by low historic and current motorboat activity. Repeating this assay at further lower-disturbance sites revealed a consistent effect of elevated oxygen consumption in response to motorboat disturbance. However, when similar trials were repeated at four higher-disturbance sites, no effect of motorboat exposure was detected. These results demonstrate that disturbance history can affect local population responses to noise. Action regarding noise pollution should consider the past, as well as the present, when planning for the future.

Abstract The Mediterranean landscape has been rapidly changing over the past decades. Many regions saw a population decline, which resulted in changing land use, abandonment of marginal lands and colonisation by shrubs and tree species. Typical features like farming terraces, olive yards, and upland grasslands have been decreasing over the past 50 years. This results in a declining biodiversity and loss of traditional Mediterranean landscapes. In this paper we assess the landscape changes that took place in two areas, in Portofino, on the Italian Riviera, and Lesvos, a Greek island near the Turkish coast. We compared land use maps and aerial photographs over the past decades to quantify the land use changes in these two areas. Additional information was acquired from farmers’ interviews and literature. We found that changes are related to societal changes in the appraisal of agricultural land uses, and to the urban expansion, tourism and recreation. These diffuse processes are a result of policy measures and autonomous societal transformations. This is confirmed by the results of two interview surveys: between 1999 and 2012 agricultural land use in Portofino regional Park and buffer zone further marginalised, and the associated landscape changes are perceived as a substantial loss of character and identity. This problem is emblematic for large parts of the Mediterranean. Comparing different landscapes reveal similar processes of landscape change, which can be related to similar driving forces. Based on such comparisons, we learn about possible trajectories of change, and ask for a comprehensive approach to land use management.

1. During the period May 1948 to May 1952, a study was made of the influence of seasonal fluctuations in the nutritive value of the natural pastures in the Bankenveld region of the Transvaal, on the growth, reproduction and production of cattle. The paired method of investigation was adopted, each heifer maintained on grazing alone having a related counterpart of the same age which received supplementary feeding during the winter months. The former treatment was termed ‘Low plane’, and the latter referred to as the ‘High plane’. Four breeds were included in the investigation, viz. Friesians and Jerseys, and Shorthorns and Afrikaners, thus representative of both dairy and beef types. The latter breed also represented the stock indigenous to South Africa. Initially five pairs per breed were studied, but deaths and other causes depleted the numbers to twenty-eight head after 4 years of investigation.2. Since the investigation formed part of a series of studies which have been in progress at the University of Pretoria and Agricultural Research Institute during the past two decades, the results of which hitherto remained unpublished, a review is provided in the early chapters. To furnish some indication of the natural conditions ruling in the Bankenveld region, the agro-ecological background is discussed, particular attention being paid to physical and nutritional factors. It is shown that for at least 6 months of the year the climate tends to be subtropical, whilst the results of digestion trials on pasture samples, indicated serious nutritional depressions in the natural grazing during winter.

Abstract Based on the results of regular monitoring and remote sensing data the patterns of water temperature of the reservoirs cascade on the Dnipro River were identified. A characteristic feature of the thermal regime of the Dnipro Cascade has been the water temperature increase over the past decades. In the period 1977–2020 the water temperature in summer increased by 0.74 °C decade−1, and during May–October by 0.65 °C decade−1. An important factor influencing the thermal regime of the reservoirs is the influence of those ones, located upstream. Water from them is discharged from the lower layer, where the processes of heating and cooling are very slow. This has a significant influence on the water temperature of downstream reservoirs, especially on their upper part. The water temperature in this part during spring and summer seasons is lower compared to natural conditions. In autumn it is higher. The temperature of water also depends on the latitude: it rises in the reservoirs located both downstream and to the south. Another important factor influencing the water temperature is the wind, which can change the temperature in the surface layer by 5–6 °С. Water temperature also depends on the intensity of algae bloom – it is higher in the spots of a large bloom.

AbstractThe paper presents results of a long-term observation focused on the growth of two selected fir-beech stands in the area of the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, which were established in the past to investigate the effect of different management treatments on the growth and structure of the stands. Attention was paid to changes in the tree species proportion, vertical and horizontal structure, the quantitative production and dead wood. The results of the monitoring of approximately 60-year stands development suggested a reduction of the fir proportion and an increase proportion of beech and maple in the natural conditions. Production characteristics (wood stock, above ground biomass, carbon stock, and dead wood) have reached higher values on the control area. The results suggested that the close-to-nature management of these forest stands has a beneficial effect on their structure and overall development.

The paper evaluates landscape development, land-use changes, and transport infrastructure variations in the city of Martin and the town of Vrútky, Slovakia, over the past 70 years. It focuses on analyses of the landscape structures characterizing the study area in several time periods (1949, 1970, 1993, 2003); the past conditions are then compared with the relevant current structure (2018). Special attention is paid to the evolution of the landscape elements forming the transport infrastructure. The development and progressive changes in traffic intensities are presented in view of the resulting impact on the formation of the landscape structure. The research data confirm the importance of transport as a force determining landscape changes, and they indicate that while railroad accessibility embodied a crucial factor up to the 1970s, the more recent decades were characterized by a gradual shift to road transport.

Mineral nutrition represents the uptake, transport, metabolism and utilization of nutrients by the forest stand. These processes influence all physiological functions of trees. A specific minimum amount of all nutrients is necessary for the healthy development and growth of forest trees. The uptake of nutrients is influenced not only by natural conditions but also by anthropogenic activities. During the period of 2000–2005 the mineral nutrition of mountain Norway spruce stands was studied at the study site Bílý Kříž (Moravian-Silesian Beskids Mts., Czech Republic). Research was carried out in a spruce stand that was limed in the past years (in 1983, 1985 and 1987) and in a spruce stand that was not limed in order to compare the liming effect on the mineral nutrition of spruce stands. A positive liming effect was detected in the calcium, magnesium and phosphorus nutrition because their contents in current needles were higher on the limed plots. No liming effect was determined in the nitrogen, potassium and microelement (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Al) content in current needles. Sufficient nutrition of spruce stands only with calcium was recorded on all studied plots.

Abstract The Memphite ruin mounds around the modern town of Mit Rahina in northern Egypt form a part of a region around which the capital of Egypt mi grated through time. Some of these migrations were the responses to landscape changes and the area is one that is subject to a number of types of landscape change. The delta and river systems as well as the deserts that surround Memphis changed profoundly as global temperatures rose at theend of the last ice age. This paper summarises the main landscape processes that affected the area and pro poses a model for river migration and delta-head change in the Memphite floodplain.
