AbstractThis paper deals with the Saint-Venant torsion of elastic, cylindrically orthotropic bar whose cross section is a sector of a circular ring shaped bar. The cylindrically orthotropic homogeneous elastic wedge-shaped bar strengthened by on its curved boundary surfaces by thin isotropic elastic shells. An analytical method is presented to obtain the Prandtl’s stress function, torsion function, torsional rigidity and shearing stresses. A numerical example illustrates the application of the developed analytical method.

In this paper we derive bounds for the torsional rigidity of a cylindrical shaft with arbitrary transverse cross-section containing a number of cylindrically orthotropic fibres or coated fibres. The exact upper and lower bounds depend on the constituent shear rigidities, the area fractions, the locations of the reinforcements as well as the geometric shape of the cross-sections. Specific bounds are derived for circular shafts, elliptical shafts and cross-sections of equilateral triangle. Simplified expressions are also deduced for reinforcements with isotropic constituents. We verify that when additional constraints between the constituent properties of the phases are fulfilled, the upper and lower bounds will coincide. In the latter case, the fibres or coated fibres become neutral under torsion and the bounds recover the previously known exact torsional rigidity.

The twisting stiffness of a rectangular cross section consisting of a single row of solid circular cross-section fibers embedded in a matrix is analyzed. The problem is formulated as a Dirichlet torsion problem of a multielement region and solved by the boundary-point least-squares method. Numerical results for a single-fiber square cross section compare favorably with previous relaxation-method results. New numerical results for three and five-fiber composites suggest that the torsional rigidity of a multifiber composite can be approximated from the torsional rigidities of single and three-fiber models.

A relatively thin—thickness to radius ratio—circular ring with rectangular cross section has been investigated to numerically evaluate the effect of eccentricity on the in plane bending natural frequencies and mode shapes. The assumed boundary conditions correspond to a ring freely supported in space such that it is free to translate and rotate with rigid body motion. A truncated Fourier series solution is assumed in an energy formulation to obtain numerical approximations of the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors for different eccentricities. Extensional and inextensional models for both Flu¨gge and Love-Timoshenko ring models were considered with two thickness to radius ratios. Results show different rates of decrease in the magnitudes of the natural frequencies for different mode configurations. Existence of closely spaced frequencies along with modal coupling are noticeable at 50 percent eccentricity.

Obtained the analytical solution of two-dimensional layered pressure flow in the screw channel, allow to simulate the flow-dynamic pressure characteristics of rectangular channels screw presses taking into account the hydraulic resistance of the forming device and calculate the mass flow-dynamic pressure characteristics of the extruders in a wide range of the geometry of the coils, as in its cross section and along the length of the channel.

The cross-section area of straight fin is often considered to be equal in the thermal analyses of straight fin, but sometimes it is unequalin actual situation. Taking a straight fin with two unequal cross-sectional areas as an example,an analytical method of heat conduction for unequal section straight fin is presented. The analytical expressions of temperature field and heat dissipating capacity about the fin, which has a smaller cross-section area near the fin base and a larger one, is obtained respectively. The calculation results of the unequal cross-section are fully consistent with the equal area one, so the method is proved right. The results show that the larger the cross section areanear the base, the better is the heat transfer, and the temperature at the base with larger cross-section area is lower than that with smaller cross-section area when the amount of heat is fixed.
