MANY attempts have been made to utilise electrolysis in aneurysms, especially in those thoracic ones that are not amenable to ordinary surgical treatment; it has been hoped that the clotting which occurs around the poles might serve as a nucleus for further coagulation and deposits of fibrin, and that the aneurysm cavity might in this way become partially filled up. Such attempts have not met with much success hitherto, and the purpose of this research has been to endeavour to determine by experiments on blood serum outside the body what the actual effect of electrolysis is so far as regards clotting. Various methods of electrolysing the blood in an aneurysm have been used by surgeons. Ciniselli introduced needles connected with both poles, and reversed the direction of the current every five minutes; of 38 cases so treated, 27 were ameliorated, but none were cured. In the unipolar method one pole only was introduced, and the other was connected with an indifferent pad placed in the vicinity. The difficult question was which pole to introduce. The positive pole gave the firmest clot, but it was thought that it might be difficult to withdraw, and that hæmorrhage or even rupture of the vessel might follow.

This article examines a case in which the defendants had made unauthorized use of the plaintiff’s trademark but were nonetheless able to successfully defend themselves against the awarding of monetary damages. As it shows, to claim damages, trademark holders must demonstrate actual harm to their reputation or loss of potential profits. It describes the methods used by the author to determine the actual effect of the infringement, which included analyzing information regarding the defendants’ intentions and the parties’ industry and the findings of a consumer survey and of Internet search and social media analytic tools. The article argues for the importance of understanding the particularities of a given case and marketplace and the utility of readily available and inexpensive Internet analytic tools.

Abstract Study question Are embryo quality and day of vitrification (Day 5, 6 or 7) associated with live birth rates (LBR) following single blastocyst transfer (SBT) in frozen embryo transfer cycle (FET)? Summary answer Both blastocyst quality and day of vitrification are significantly associated with LBRs, with very low LBR when poor quality embryos are frozen on day 6. What is known already Evidence suggests that chromosomal status (ploidy) is strongly associated with blastocyst morphology and good quality embryos are more likely to be euploid. Furthermore, previous studies have shown a relationship between the time that embryos need to reach blastocyst stage and their euploidy rate with slowly developing blastocysts showing higher rate of aneuploidy. Nonetheless, despite all this evidence little is known about the actual effect of the combination of blastocyst quality and day of its vitrification. The scope of this study was to quantify the actual effect of the embryo quality and day of vitrification on live birth rates following FET. Study design, size, duration Retrospective analysis of 1546 FET cycles with SBT conducted between 2017 and 2019 in the university-affiliated private clinic. The embryos used for FET were obtained from IVF/ICSI: with PGT (FET-PGT) or without PGT (FET0) or from donated oocytes (FET-DON). Participants/materials, setting, methods FET with natural, natural-modified and completely medicated cycles to prepare endometrial lining were included. Blastocysts were classified according to Spanish Association for the Study of Reproductive Biology (ASEBIR) classification, ranging from A (the highest) to D (the lowest). The impact on LBR of different subgroups, formed within FET-PGT, FET0, FET-DON groups due to different day of vitrification and blastocyst quality, was assessed, using logistic regression after adjusting for age, day of vitrification and embryo quality. Main results and the role of chance We included 1546 FET cycles. Of those, 543 (35%) corresponded to FET-PGT; 648 (42%) to FET0 and 355 (23%) to FET-DON cycles. Overall, 1051 (68%) embryos were frozen on day 5(D5), 472 (30.5%) on day 6(D6) and 23 (1.5%) on day 7(D7). As far as embryo quality was concerned, 215 (13.9%) grade A; 957 (61.9%) B; 371(24%) C and 3(0.2%) D blastocysts were transferred. LBRs were significantly different between different embryos frozen on D5 44.3%; on D6 28.8% and on D7 8.7%, p < 0.001. When blastocyst quality was considered, LBR were 48.4% for grade A; 42.5% for B; 25.1% for C and 0% for D, p < 0.001. After applying logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio (OR) for transferring D6-blastocyst was 1.08, 95% CI[0.45; 2.62] and blastocyst with grade B and C; 0.71, 95% CI[0.51; 1.00]; 0.57,95% CI[0.36; 0.88] respectively. However, after transferring D6-blastocyst graded as C, the OR was 0.33, 95% CI[0.12; 0.90]. Our predictive model showed that the impact of the embryo quality on LBR was sustained across three groups. Transfer of D5/D6 grade A blastocyst resulted in the highest, while D6-C in the lowest LBR in all the groups. In the latter case vitrification on D6 impaired additionally the outcome. Limitations, reasons for caution The study should be interpreted with caution due to its retrospective character and the assessment of blastocyst quality on the day of vitrification and not on the day its transfer. Wider implications of the findings: Our robust findings could be considered a useful tool for counselling couples who seek advice regarding their expected success rates in the setting of FET with SBT. The very low livebirth rates in low quality (C) slow developing (D6) embryos should be communicated to patients prior to planning a FET. Trial registration number Not applicable

Objectives: In recent years, science and technology financial support industries are actively supporting the innovation and development of high-tech industries. In order to test the actual effect of S&T financial support industry support plan, a GARCH (Generalized AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity) model is designed by using K-means (K-means clustering) algorithm and GM (1,1) (grey prediction) algorithm, which can quantitatively display the development of S&T financial industry to promote high-tech. The GARCH model is used to quantify the degree of innovation and development of science and technology finance industry in the Internet of Things (loT) technology. Finally, according to the quantitative data obtained by GARCH (Generalized AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity) model, the actual effect of science and technology finance industry promoting innovation and development of high-tech is evaluated by FAHP (Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process) model. The results show that science and technology finance industry plays a positive role in promoting the innovation and development of loT technology.

Improving the cutting performance, especially the cutting quality of sugarcane harvesters is the most magnificent problem for popularizing the application of the havesters. Much research has been done on most effect factors but rare on the influence of rigidity enhancement of sugarcane cutter. Indeed, the rigidity of sugarcane cutter has notable influence on the quality of sugarcane cutting,as it effects its vibration and the vibration in turn brings great damage to the cutting quality. This paper analyzes how the rigidity of sugarcane cutter effects its working vibration by building up its mathematical model, then further investigates it by making a dynamical simulation analysis to compare two cutter structures with different rigidity based on ANSYS and ADAMS, and validate the actual effect of enhancing the cutter rigidity through a physical experiment. The result shows enhancing the rigidity of the cutter could lead to notable improvement of sugarcane cutting quality.

Opening ParagraphThe Zulu live on the south-east coast of South Africa, in a region of fertile soil, watered by fair summer rains which are occasionally interrupted by drought. Towards the end of the agricultural season they hold a great tribal ceremony, which Sir James Frazer cites as a typical first fruits sacrament, though the ceremony itself has many different rites. I hope in this paper to show that these, and the taboos on the early eating of the first fruits, together with the ritual approach to them, guard against socially disruptive forces. To the natives the importance of the ceremony is that it protects them against mystical powers; their actual effect must be sought by the anthropologist.

ABSTRACT Most integral endpoints of the antimicrobial effect are determined over an arbitrarily chosen time period, such as the dosing interval (τ), regardless of the actual effect duration. Unlike the τ-related endpoints, the intensity of the antimicrobial effect (I E) does consider its duration—from time zero to the time when bacterial counts on the regrowth curve achieve the same maximal numbers as in the absence of the antimicrobial. To examine the possible impact of this fundamental difference on the relationships of the antimicrobial effect to the ratio of the area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) to the MIC, a clinical isolate ofStaphylococcus aureus was exposed to simulated gemifloxacin pharmacokinetics over a 40-fold range of AUC/MIC ratios, from 11 to 466 h. In each run, I E and four τ-related endpoints, including the area under the time-kill curve (AUBC), the area above the curve (AAC), the area between the control growth and time-kill curves (ABBC), and the ABBC related to the area under the control growth curve (AUGC), were calculated for τ = 24 h. Unlike the I E, which displayed pseudolinear relationships with the AUC/MIC ratio; each τ-related endpoint showed a distinct saturation at potentially therapeutic AUC/MIC ratios (116 to 466 h) when the antimicrobial effect persisted longer than τ. This saturation results from the underestimation of the true effect and may be eliminated if ABBC, AAC, and AUBC (but not AUGC) are modified and determined in the same manner as the I E to consider the actual effect duration. These data suggest a marginal value of the τ-related endpoints as indices of the total antimicrobial effect. Since all of them respond to AUC/MIC ratio changes less than theI E, the latter is preferable in comparative pharmacodynamic studies.
