e13589 Background: The epidemiology of cancer among adolescents and young adults (AYA) has been a relatively neglected topic, particularly in the developing countries. The main objective of this study was to present the epidemiology of cancer among this subpopulation in Haiti’s largest cancer program. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients aged 15 to 39 years old with pathological and/or clinical diagnosis of cancer at the cancer clinic of Innovating Health International (IHI) in Port-au-Prince, Haiti from January 2016 to December 2019. The chart review collected variables such as age, gender, date of diagnosis, cancer type and outcome to present this epidemiological profile of AYA cancers. Results: Among the two thousand two hundred and ninety-eight (2298) cancer cases managed during this study period, 20.1% (n = 461) were adolescents and young adults. 82% of these patients were female and 18% male. 25.2% (n = 116) were less than 30 years old. Breast cancer was the most common type (n = 222, 48.2%%), followed by gynecological cancers (n = 70, 15.1%) with cervical cancer representing 61.4% of the cases (n = 43), hematological malignancies (n = 44, 9.5%) with lymphomas (n = 31) as the most common type, sarcomas (n = 43, 9.3%), head and neck cancers (n = 24, 5.2%), gastrointestinal cancers (n = 22, 4.8%), cutaneous cancers (n = 10, 2.2%), urological cancers (n = 5, 1.1%), thyroid cancer (n = 5, 1.1%) and CNS tumors (n = 2, 0.4%). 3.0% of the AYA patients (n = 14) presented with a cancer of unknown primary (CUP). In the < 30 y/o subgroup blood cancers, breast cancer, sarcomas, and head and neck malignancies were respectively the most common types, while in the ≥ 30 y/o subgroup, breast and gynecological cancers were the most common, followed by sarcomas, GI and blood cancers. No case of lung cancer was received for the AYA population. The overall mortality rate was 30.6% and 12.8% of the patients were lost to follow-up. Conclusions: Cancers among AYA patients represented 20.1% of the cancer population, with a different epidemiological profile for the < 30 y/o and ≥ 30 y/o subgroups. The CNS tumors, leukemias and urological cancers were most likely under-represented due to low referral, misdiagnosis or early mortality.

CNS tumors are one of the most common causes of cancer-related death in the 15- to 39-year-old age group. The management of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) who are diagnosed with brain tumors presents unique endocrine, developmental, and psychosocial issues. AYAs are frequently diagnosed late, after a prolonged period of misdiagnosis. The epidemiology, biology, prognosis, and overall management of these tumors differ from those of both older and younger age groups. AYAs are usually in a transitional phase in their lives, and brain tumors in this age group carry a better prognosis than in older adults; thus, special attention should be paid to survivorship care. Fertility and other treatment-related sequelae that affect the quality of life, as well as the increased risk of secondary malignancies in long-term survivors, are such examples. Although most AYAs are managed by adult or, to a lesser extent pediatric, oncologists, a multidisciplinary approach in the setting of specialized centers with increased participation in clinical trials is preferable. End-of-life and palliative care remain an unmet need for these patients, because most physicians lack the training to discuss such issues with young patients.

Abstract.Narcissism is seen as a multidimensional construct that consists of two manifestations: grandiose and vulnerable narcissism. In order to define these two manifestations, their relationship to personality factors has increasingly become of interest. However, so far no studies have considered the relationship between different phenotypes of narcissism and personality factors in adolescents. Method: In a cross-sectional study, we examine a group of adolescents (n = 98; average age 16.77 years; 23.5 % female) with regard to the relationship between Big Five personality factors and pathological narcissism using self-report instruments. This group is compared to a group of young adults (n = 38; average age 19.69 years; 25.6 % female). Results: Grandiose narcissism is primarily related to low Agreeableness and Extraversion, vulnerable narcissism to Neuroticism. We do not find differences between adolescents and young adults concerning the relationship between grandiose and vulnerable narcissism and personality traits. Discussion: Vulnerable and grandiose narcissism can be well differentiated in adolescents, and the pattern does not show substantial differences compared to young adults.

Background: Notwithstanding the epidemiological studies indicating an increased risk of attempted suicide among adolescents and young adults, there is a scarcity of international studies that examine long-term epidemiological trends in rates and characteristics of this vulnerable group. Aims: This article describes the results of a 9-year monitoring study of suicide attempts in adolescents and young adults referred to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Gent University Hospital (Belgium). Methods: Between January 1996 and December 2004, trends, sociodemographic, and methodrelated characteristics of suicide attempts were assessed by a psychiatrist on data sheets. Results: Attempted suicide rates declined from 1996 to 2001 and then rose until 2004, but did not exceed previous rates. During the 9 years of monitoring, there was a preponderance of female suicide attempters, except for 1997. Rates of attempts and of fatal suicide were negatively correlated. Significantly more males than females deliberately injured themselves. Younger attempters, especially females, significantly more often poisoned themselves with analgesics. In nearly one in five attempts, alcohol was used in combination with other methods, and alcohol intake was more commonly observed in older suicide attempters. Nearly half of the adolescents were identified as repeaters. Conclusions: The results of this study warrant further monitoring of trends and characteristics of young suicide attempters.

Abstract. One of the most common personality disorders among adolescents and young adults is the Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The objective of current study was to assess three questionnaires that can reliably screen for BPD in adolescents and young adults (N = 53): the McLean Screening Instrument for BPD (MSI-BPD; Zanarini et al., 2003 ), the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire 4th edition – BPD scale (PDQ-4 BPD; Hyler, 1994 ), and the SCID-II Patient Questionnaire – BPD scale (SCID-II-PQ BPD). The nine criteria of BPD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV; APA, 1994 ) were measured with the Structural Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II disorders – BPD scale (SCID-II; First, Spitzer, Gibbon, Williams, & Benjamin, 1995 ). Correlations between the questionnaires and the SCID-II were calculated. In addition, the sensitivity and specificity of the questionnaires were tested. All instruments predicted the BPD diagnosis equally well.
