Sustainable structural materials with light weight, great thermal dimensional stability, and superb mechanical properties are vitally important for engineering application, but the intrinsic conflict among some material properties (e.g., strength and toughness) makes it challenging to realize these performance indexes at the same time under wide service conditions. Here, we report a robust and feasible strategy to process cellulose nanofiber (CNF) into a high-performance sustainable bulk structural material with low density, excellent strength and toughness, and great thermal dimensional stability. The obtained cellulose nanofiber plate (CNFP) has high specific strength [~198 MPa/(Mg m−3)], high specific impact toughness [~67 kJ m−2/(Mg m−3)], and low thermal expansion coefficient (<5 × 10−6 K−1), which shows distinct and superior properties to typical polymers, metals, and ceramics, making it a low-cost, high-performance, and environmental-friendly alternative for engineering requirement, especially for aerospace applications.

The glass-ceramics of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system were prepared by sintering technology. The crystallization process of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramics was investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and other techniques; the discussion of breaking strength, thermal expansion coefficient and relevant properties at different sintering temperatures was also presented. The results show that: (1) The main crystalline phase isα-cordierite at different sintering temperatures, and the samples show high flexural strength and low thermal expansion coefficient; (2) with the increase of sintering temperature, the content of crystal phase increases, while the thermal expansion coefficient decreases evidently, the flexural strength and tightness density rise up first, then go down.

The low-thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) of cement paste and concrete are designed and prepared with fly ash in this study. The thermal expansion property and pore structure of cement/concrete are tested by Thermal Dilatometer, MIP, and SEM. The test results show that the addition of fly ash lowers the thermal expansion rate and coefficient of hardened paste. The increase of addition level is accompanied by the decrease of the thermal expansion coefficient. The introduction of fly ash could improve the pore structure of concrete, thus improve the thermal expansion property of cement concrete.

Composites are special material which can provide individual properties such as high strength with low density or good thermal conductivity with low thermal expansion coefficient. Composites conform to the constantly evolving and more complex expectations. In order to make a product with good quality, it is important to choose suitable materials and technology. In this research powder metallurgy (PM), as one of the most common composite manufacturing technology, was examined -which factors and mechanisms influence mostly the properties of the product. Ishikawa method was used to reveal these correlations.

In this paper, negative thermal expansion coefficient eucryptite powders were prepared by sol-gel method using silica-sol as starting material. The raw blocks were obtained by dry pressing process after the powder was synthesized, and then the raw blocks were heat-treated at 600º, 1150º, 1280º, 1380º, 1420º and 1450°C, respectively. Variations of density, porosity and thermal expansion coefficient at different heat treatment temperatures were investigated. Phase transformation and fracture surface morphology of eucryptite heat-treated at different temperatures, respectively, were observed by XRD and SEM. The results indicate that, with the increasing heat- treatment temperature, the grain size and the bending strength increased, porosity decreased, thermal expansion coefficient decreased continuously. Negative thermal expansion coefficient of -5.3162×10-6~-7.4413×10-6 (0~800°C) was obtained. But when the heat-treatment temperature was more than 1420°C, porosity began to increase, bending strength began to decrease, which were the symbols of over-burning, while the main crystal phase didn’t change.
