AbstractAuckland experienced phenomenal expansion since 1841. This study assesses the pace of urban sprawl and its control over the natural environment and housing affordability. After the urban built-up area was mapped, its change over time was detected, and correlated with population. From 1842 to 2014 built-up area in Auckland grew from 48 ha to 50,531 ha. The pace of growth was 151 ha/year during 1842–1945 but jumped to 989 ha per annum during 1975–2001. It dropped to only 249 ha per annum in this century. This unchecked sprawl is a direct response to population growth and facilitated by improved transportation. Since the late 1990s urban built-up areas experienced a subdued expansion despite continued population growth. This curtailed sprawl is attributed to the contentious planning regulations implemented to curtail sprawl. Consequently, population density rose to 28 persons/ha, the highest since a century ago. Urban growth has reduced biomass and green fields with mean vegetation index dropped from 129.5 to 118.7 during 2002–2014 with a smaller standard deviation, suggesting the landscape is increasingly homogenized. House prices rose slowly when the growth potential decreased slowly and vice versa (r = − 0.925) while the number of vacant sections suitable for single dwellings declined. Thus, controlled urban sprawl is largely responsible for the skyrocketed price of sections and declined housing affordability.

Urban sprawl refers to the urbanization extent, which is mainly caused by population growth and large scale migration and it is a global phenomenon. In developing countries like Nepal, where the population growth and internal migration rate in urban area is high, it has posed serious implication on the resources of the region. Effective and efficient infrastructure planning of an urban environment require information related to the rate of urban growth along with its trend, pattern and extent of urban sprawl. The pattern and extent of urban sprawl is identified and modeled using remotely sensed data along with collateral data. RS and GIS are used to analyze and interpret the urban land use changes. The urban areas of developing countries are densely populated and need the use of sophisticated monitoring systems, such as remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS). The urban sprawl of a city is best understood by studying the dynamics of LULC change which can be easily generated by using sequential satellite images, required for the prediction of urban growth. Multivariate statistical techniques and regression models have been used to establish the relationship between the urban growth and its causative factors and for forecast of the population growth and urban expansion. In Srinagar city, one of the fastest growing metropolitan cities situated in Jammu and Kashmir State of India, sprawl is taking its toll on the natural resources at an alarming pace. The present study was carried over a period of 40 years (1971–2011), to understand the dynamics of spatial and temporal variability of urban sprawl. The results reveal that built-up area has increased by 585.08 % while as the population has increased by 214.75 %. The forecast showed an increase of 246.84 km<sup>2</sup> in built-up area which exceeds the overall carrying capacity of the city. The most common conversions were also evaluated.

The uncontrolled spread of cities into their surrounding rural and natural land is an issue of high popular interest and has been the topic of considerable research. Urban sprawl remains controversial, even though among scholars there are still no unambiguous definitions of sprawled zones--their spatial form and their causative factors--nor about the urban processes and dynamics involved. In order to create such a definition, the authors describe the spatio-temporal patterns of urban form in a study area noted for sprawl, focusing on measures that can detect the degree of urban spatial dispersion over time (Batty 2002). The data used is a fusion of archived thematic maps, classified satellite imagery, census data, and forecast maps of future urban scenarios. The area investigated was the northeastern province of Pordenone in Italy, which is particularly relevant and curious because despite being a small city, it was assessed in 2002 as one of the most explicative examples of sprawl in Europe by the European Environment Agency. The authors analyzed urban growth mainly through the evolution of urban patterns over time, hence sprawl is considered as a specific case of growth that drives urban expansion from denser and compact extent to an unorganized and fragmented pattern. How the spatio-temporal dynamics of urban growth are quantified is crucial for urban planners, as knowledge of amounts and rates allows more efficient selection and application of policy and could help researchers to better understand urban sprawl’s etiology.

California needs a new guiding narrative for shared understanding and for directing public decisions about threats and opportunities in the state. Misleading and counterproductive guidance is provided by narratives that are no longer supported by recent trends. Ongoing changes related to two specific guiding narratives are described. In the first, support for Proposition 13 was founded on explosive increases of house prices in the 1970s, along with assumptions of continued migration of newcomers willing to pay higher prices and the higher taxes needed to offset discounts for oldtimers. A second narrative of demographic change reacts negatively to rapid population growth, soaring immigration and racial change. Remarkably, virtually all the premises in these two narratives have been overturned by events. Instead, a different set of urgent problems and opportunities have emerged that require a new guiding vision. In place of exploding house prices, tax assessments have collapsed and we struggle to revive the housing market. Young buyers are asked to pay the highest taxes, but today it is the young not the old who are vulnerable and threatened. While before it was a struggle to keep up with migration from outside California, immigration has declined and today the growth is homegrown. Meanwhile, the aging baby boomers are about to create a crisis of replacement workers, taxpayers and home buyers. Cultivating the new homegrown generation is our paramount need. Today the story of California is completely reversed, yet adherence to the old narratives blocks recognition of the path to a brighter future.

Na região Nordeste do Brasil existe uma gama de aglomerações urbanas, dentre as quais se destaca a conurbação urbana, conhecida como Crajubar, localizada na Região Metropolitana do Cariri (RMC), no sul do Ceará, onde existe uma percepção de ausência de limites urbanos entre os três municípios: Crato, Juazeiro do Norte e Barbalha. Assim, este trabalho busca compreender a dinâmica da expansão do Crajubar, por meio de técnicas de Geoprocessamento. Para tanto, utilizou-se arquivos vetoriais da delimitação territorial com mancha urbana do ano de 2005 e imagens orbitais dos satélites GeoEye do ano de 2018. Para o processamento dos dados foi utilizado o software QGIS. O Google Earth foi usado para identificar estabelecimentos responsáveis por atraírem crescimento urbano para o seu entorno, ainda foram utilizadas informações oficiais de crescimento populacional e informações econômicas geradas pelos órgãos oficiais. Como resultados, geraram-se arquivos vetoriais com duas manchas urbanas da região, sendo uma de 2005 e outra de 2018, as quais apresentam a conurbação dos três municípios para as duas situações. A partir do mapa gerado, construiu-se o entendimento dos fatores que impulsionam a expansão espacial urbana do Crajubar, tais como serviços públicos nas áreas de infraestrutura, saúde e educação. Evaluation of expansion of Crajubar urban agglomerate using geomatics A B S T R A C TIn the Northeast region of Brazil there is a range of urban agglomerations, among which the urban conurbation known as Crajubar. It is located in the metropolitan area of Cariri (MAC), in the south of Ceará, where there is a perception of the absence of urban boundaries between the three towns: Crato, Juazeiro do Norte and Barbalha. This work tries to understand the dynamics of the expansion of Crajubar, using Geoprocessing techniques. It was used shapefiles of the territorial delimitation with urban area of the year of 2005 and GeoEye satellites images of the year of 2018. The QGIS software was used for data processing. The Google Earth was used to identify companies and institutions responsible for attracting urban growth for the around their area, official information on population growth and economic information generated by government institutions was also used. As a result, shapefiles were generated with two urban areas in the region, one of area in 2005 and another area in 2018, where each one presents the conurbation of the three towns for both situations. From the generated map, the understanding of the factors that have influenced the urban spatial expansion of Crajubar was constructed, such as public services of infrastructure, health and education.Keywords: Urbanization, Population Growth, Geoprocessing.

<p>Whangarei City has a dying Commercial Centre. This has resulted from population shifts that have occurred over time. Significant issues have driven movement of people toward much larger cities (seeking better economic, cultural and social outcomes) and more spacious urban fringes (seeking improved environmental outcomes). The Whangarei CBD incorporates both the dying Commercial Centre and a thriving Town Basin which is the centre for Arts and Recreation within the city. The two areas are a juxtaposition. The investigation reveals reasons why two such contrasting areas exist and defines a design solution that seeks to resolve this and leverages the success of the Town Basin to revive the Commercial Centre. The aim of this thesis is to investigate ways that architecture can be used to invigorate Whangarei’s dying Commercial Centre by creating a place of activity, engagement and informal learning and by re-establishing the important connection Whangarei has with its river as well as other positives within the city.   Thesis objectives:  • Identify the reasons for the decline of the Commercial Centre and the success of the Town Basin and how a connection can be established between the two.  • Establish a beating heart within the dying Commercial Centre and provide a life source in the form of people movement into the centre from all parts of the city.  • Provide dynamic spaces which encourage informal learning, social interaction, playfulness and creativity that will engage the people of Whangarei including youth and children.  • Use the natural environment as a means of engaging people of all ages by weaving together water, a restored ecology and architecture.</p>

The majority of the world's population will live in cities in the next few years and the pace of urbanization worldwide will continue to accelerate over the coming decades. While the number of megacities is projected to increase, the largest population growth is expected to be in cities of less than one million people. Such a dramatic demographic shift can be expected to have an impact on population health. Although there has been historic interest in how city living affects health, a cogent framework that enables systematic study of urban health across time and place has yet to emerge. Four alternate but complementary approaches to the study of urban health today are presented (urban health penalty, urban health advantage, urban sprawl, and an integrative urban conditions model) followed by three key questions that may help guide the study and practice of urban health in coming decades.

Urban sprawl is a global phenomenon in the contemporary era. It is mostly taking place in the less developed countries due to natural increase and consistent movement of people into the mega cities and large urban centers. The phenomenon has globally gained attention from diverse researchers in the field of urban geography, environmental studies, city and region planning in view of its significant influence on the urban environment. However, the effect of sprawl on urban livability and economy in Nigerian cities is scarcely investigated especially in Northern Nigeria. This research explores the social and economic effects of urban sprawl in Kaduna metropolis. Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) Technologies were applied for the analysis. The study found that Kaduna metropolis has experienced a progressive increase in the built-up area; in 2006 it had an aerial coverage of 13,980 hectares, a rise of 107.91% from 2001 aerial coverage of 6724 hectares. In 2012, the city had an aerial coverage of 15,808 hectares, an increase of 13.08% from 2006. Conversely, there has been a remarkable decrease in percentage of vegetation (1,458 hectares) and agricultural (11,739 hectares) land areas. In turn, such changes has adversely affected urban facilities or utilities such as pipe-borne water, electricity, health facilities, schools, security, transportation, wastewater infrastructures and fire safety services, which has become overstressed. Economic crisis has manifested in the rise of unemployment and escalating number of urban poor. Residential land use has encroached into open spaces while commercial activities overrun residential areas. Increase in distance and journey time make travel cost unbearable to the common man. These and social fragmentation retard livability in the city. Thus calls for a balance sustainable development in Kaduna metropolis and effective management of urban growth by the Kaduna Capital Development Board Authority. In due course, smart growth policy, growth management, urban containment, effective land use planning and public facility adequacy have been recommended to foster viable urban growth in Kaduna city and elsewhere.

Dhaka city is with its unplanned urban growth, creating shortage of land in comparison to the ever-increasing population, and uneven distribution of residential lands among different income groups. Moreover, factories are flourishing in Dhaka city, but no attempt has yet been made so far, to provide adequate to the workers with low-income either by the government or the factory owner. A housing unit demands the qualities of comfort, conveniences, and amenities; however, this demand requires considerable chunk of land and renters or owners need to have financial solvency to dwell in. Here come the premises on housing affordability. The paper aims at understanding the pulse of low-Income peoples ‘housing' that include settlement pattern, house forms, space allocations, group accommodations, breathing spaces and sharing of facilities and utilities and consequently provide them a viable environment where life and living turn into a delight.
