Samples of duplex stainless steel were plasma nitrided at different atmosphere proportion and nitriding time. The hardness and the corrosion resistance of the untreated and various plasma treated samples were characterised by a variety of analytical techniques. The results show that plasma nutriding at low temperature can improve hardness of duplex stainless steel and its corrosion properties at the same time. Declining the atmosphere proportion of ammonia and argon can effectively prevent the nonuniformity of hardness of nitriding layers and extension of nitriding time is conducive to enhance the hardness and thickness of nitriding layer. In addition, the corrosion peoporties of duplex stainless steel nitrided increase when the nitriding time improves, but its corrosion resistance rises slowly after nitriding for 9h.

The effects of morphology of ferrite and non-metallic inclusions on corrosion resistance of as-cast 304 stainless steel (304 SS) were investigated. With the decrease in quenching temperature from 1723 K to 1648 K, the different microstructures of the as-cast 304 SS were obtained as the following series: austenitic-lathy δ ferrite, austenitic-colony δ ferrite and austenitic-blocky δ ferrite, and the average inclusion size increased. The electrochemical results show that the sample with the microstructure of austenitic- lathy δ ferrite and smaller size inclusions had a higher corrosion tendency and the lower pitting resistance. Furthermore, the effect of morphology and content of ferrite on corrosion resistance was greater than that of inclusion size under the current experimental conditions. Therefore, a promising method was developed to improve the corrosion resistance of as-cast 304 SS by changing the solidification process.

Abstract Martensitic stainless steels are used in a large number of various industrial applications, e.g. molds for plastic injections and glass moldings, automotive components, cutting tools, surgical and dental instruments. The improvement of their tribological and corrosion properties is a problem of high interest especially in medical applications, where patient safety becomes a priority. The paper covers findings from plasma nitrided AISI 440B (PN-EN or DIN X90CrMoV18) stainless steel corrosion resistance studies. Conventionally heat treated and plasma nitrided in N2:H2 reaction gas mixture (50:50, 65:35 and 80:20, respectively) in two different temperature ranges (380 or 450°C) specimens groups were examined. Microscopic observations and electrochemical corrosion tests were performed using a variety of analytical techniques. As obtained findings show, plasma nitriding of AISI 440B stainless steel, regardless of the process temperature, results in reduction of corrosion current density. Nevertheless, applying thermo-chemical process which requires exceeding temperature of about 400°C is not recommended due to increased risk of steel sensitization to intergranular and stress corrosion. According to the results, material ion nitrided in 450°C underwent leaching corrosion processes, which led to significant disproportion in chemical composition of the corroded and corrosion-free areas. The authors suggest further research into corrosion process of plasma nitrided materials and its degradation products.

In this study, salt bath nitriding was carried out at 565℃ for various times for 304 stainless steel (304SS). The effect of salt bath nitriding time on the microstructure, micro-hardness and wear resistance was investigated systematically. The results showed a nitriding layer was formed during salt bath nitriding, and the thickness of effective hardening layer is duration dependant. The maximum microhardness value of 1200HV0.01 was obtained at optimal duration of 150min, which was five times higher than that of the untreated sample. And the wear resistance could be significantly improved by salt bath nitriding, the lowest weight loss after wear resistance was obtained while nitriding for 150min, which was one tenth of that of untreated sample.

Nowadays, welding of dissimilar metals has become significant. In this process, a number of parameters including but not limited to type of electrode, amount of current, preheating temperature, and welding rate, that are essential to be taken into account. For welding of dissimilar metals, various methods are exploited including shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The stimulus for studying welding of 304L stainless steel to pure copper originates from difficulties in joining copper parts of           water-circulating molds to their steel part. In this study, the welding is performed on plates of steel and copper using SMAW, GTAW and combined SMAW+GTAW welding methods with    EL-CuMn2, ENiCrMo-6 and ER70S-4 electrodes. In order to investigate the microstructure and corrosion resistance behavior of welds, the samples were characterized using microstructural study and polarization test. It was observed that among all four welding methods, only combined SMAW+GTAW welding process resulted in successful joint between 304L stainless steel and copper. Both obtained joints possess suitable microstructure and corrosion resistance.
