This report focuses on the potential for using waste carpets as part of cover and liner systems at municipal solid waste landfills. Five different carpet materials were tested for their characteristics before and after incorporation with solid wastes in simulated landfill bioreactors. Selected analyses are presented on heavy metals and volatile organic compounds from TCLP extracts, and on leachate and gas samples during operation with and without leachate recycle. Biological clogging tests indicated no alteration in carpet integrity o2r significant reduction in permeability. Solid waste stabilization, indicated by gas and leachate parameters, proceeded without adverse impact from the codisposed carpets. Volatile organic compounds and heavy metals were present in trace amounts and below regulatory limits. These results supported post-consumer use of carpets as filter and separation layers for municipal solid waste landfill cover and liner systems.

The incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), which causes heart disease and stroke, has increased significantly worldwide. Although many studies have revealed the relationship between heavy metals (cadmium, mercury, and lead), the sum of metabolites of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and MetS, the results remain inconsistent. No study has reported the association between various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phthalate metabolites with MetS. This cross-sectional study of a representative sample of adult South Koreans aimed to evaluate the relationship between heavy metals, VOC metabolites, phthalate metabolites, bisphenol A and MetS after adjusting for demographic variables. Data from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey II (2012–2014) (n = 5251) were used in the analysis. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed for MetS with log-transformed hazardous material quartiles after covariate adjustment. Urine muconic acid (MuA) and mono- (2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHHP) levels were significantly associated with MetS after adjusting for confounders (odds ratio: 1.34 and 1.39, respectively). Urine MuA and MEHHP levels were significantly associated with MetS. Because of the rarity of this study, which investigated the relationship between each VOC and phthalate metabolite with MetS and the strict definition of all indirect measures of MetS components, further research is needed.

The current study was designed to demonstrate the efficiency of selected zeolites in the immobilization of heavy metals and volatile organic compounds from water in the industrial area of Tito Scalo (Basilicata Region in Southern Italy). The efficiency of zeolite materials has been evaluated by analyzing real water samples, by a multi-technique approach. Gas chromatography (GC) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) were selected for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals respectively, and then by thermal analysis (TG, DTA) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) to verify the presence of contaminants in the structural channels of the adsorbents. ZSM-5 zeolite (MFI topology) was suitable for volatile organic compounds, showing removal efficiencies 87%. 13X (FAU topology) was more selective for in situ abatements of heavy metals, with efficiencies up to 100%. After VOCs and heavy metals removal, structure refinements of loaded zeolites highlighted variations of both lattice parameters and extraframework content confirming the pollutants immobilization in the framework microporosities. The occurrence of these species was also confirmed by DTA curves showing different phenomena explained on the basis of the nature and number of extraframework species hosted in the zeolite micropores.

Biochar has caused great interest due to its sequestrating carbon and improving soil fertilities. It has been increasing attracted and applied to agriculture systems. However, many toxic compounds (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs),heavy metals) are likely to be formed during biochar production. These compounds may be existed in biochar matrix and even bioavailable to exposed organisms. Therefore, the formation and impact factors as well as the concentrations and bioavailability of these compounds are reviewed.

This research is a study and development of environmentally friendly products from rice stumps for community economy. The study was done by testing the coatings for heavy metals and volatile organic compounds to match with material choices with low environmental impacts. The author therefore chose 9 types of popular coatings which the community can easily obtain from the market. Testing was done in two parts: the first part was to find 7 heavy metals by using Thailand’s green label standard and standard criteria set by the European Union while the second part was to test for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and evaluate the environmental impacts in order to list materials and energy used by the products for their entire lifetime. Lastly, a survey was conducted using environmentally friendly products from rice stumps as models in order to investigate the perceptions in relation to manufacturing factors consistent with the manufacturers, the designers, as well as the perceptions of consumers. The study has found that rice stump coatings that passed the standard criteria are white shellac, gloss lacquer, wood preservatives, varnish and polyurethane respectively. It was found that manufacturers and designers had differing opinions in using low-impact materials and avoiding harmful materials while manufacturers, designers and consumers had statistically significant differing opinions in terms of the appropriate sizes and colors of products. In terms of product aesthetics, convenience of use, promotion of environmental friendliness, indication of natural manufacturing process and ease of elimination after the end of product lifetime, there were no differing opinions which were at a good level.
