The paper adopts a descriptive case study method to examine the impact of juristic views on the operations of two Malaysian takaful companies. In order to achieve this objective, the annual financial reports of both companies were analysed. Interviews with each company’s finance managers and with a member of the Malaysian Shariah Advisory Council were undertaken for a more in-depth coverage. Also a written correspondence with a senior official of the central bank was accomplished. Similarities and differences between the two companies were identified and it is concluded that the differences are serious enough to warrant interventions from the regulators in the form of mandatory disclosures in the annual reports.

Purpose: The main objective of this study was to investigate the impact of fund transfer agencies to liquidity management of KPLC.Methodology: A descriptive case study research design was used. The population for the study included all the 82employees in the KPLC Mombasa Branch. A sample of 57 respondents was selected from the population using a stratified random sampling technique. A questionnaire was the preferred data collection instrument. The data was analyzed by use of descriptive statistics such as mean, mode and median. Results: The study findings showed that there was a gradual decline in the average collection period. This implied an improvement in the average collection period of KPLC Mombasa over the year 2002 to 2010. In addition, the number of fund transfer transaction increased over the study period. This implied that the fund transfer transactions may have impacted on the average collection period. Further, according to this study it was possible to infer that there was a gradual increase in the acid test ratio. This implied an improvement in the acid test ratio of KPLC Mombasa over the year 2002 to 2010. In addition, the number of fund transfer transaction increased over the study period. This implied that the fund transfer transactions may have impacted on the acid test ratio.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study recommended that KPLC should engage more fund transfer agents in facilitating bill payments. Specifically, KPLC should engage more banks, Saccos, western unions and mobile operators. This is because such an approach would improve the average collection period and acid test ratio further. The study was purely descriptive; it therefore lacks the statistical rigor that would establish causation between fund transfer agencies and average collection period as well as the acid test ratio. Therefore, the study recommends a regression analysis to establish causation between dependent and independent variables.

This preliminary research aimed at portraying the impact of Digital Learning System (DLS) implementation on student empowerment. This work used qualitative descriptive case study. First semester English students of a state university in Medan, Indonesia, negotiated to participate in the study. Grounded in dialogic interview, the results suggest that the enactment of DLS gives attractive lesson for the students. The students felt the instruction made them borderless between the students and the lecturers. Overall implementation of DLS enables students to reach minimum standardized criteria in their listening skills. Limitation and further recommendation for next research are also presented

In the context of the hype, promise and perils of Big Data and the currently dominant paradigm of data-driven decision-making, it is important to critically engage with the potential of Big Data for higher education. We do not question the potential of Big Data, but we do raise a number of issues, and present a number of theses to be seriously considered in realising this potential.

The University of South Africa (Unisa) is one of the mega ODL institutions in the world with more than 360,000 students and a range of courses and programmes. Unisa already has access to a staggering amount of student data, hosted in disparate sources, and governed by different processes. As the university moves to mainstreaming online learning, the amount of and need for analyses of data are increasing, raising important questions regarding our assumptions, understanding, data sources, systems and processes.

This article presents a descriptive case study of the current state of student data at Unisa, as well as explores the impact of existing data sources and analytic approaches. From the analysis it is clear that in order for big(ger) data to be better data, a number of issues need to be addressed. The article concludes by presenting a number of theses that should form the basis for the imperative to optimise the harvesting, analysis and use of student data.

This study analyzes the possible intended and unintended impact of statewide exit exams as a governance tool used by education authorities. In a descriptive case study based on quantitative empirical research, three German states (Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia) with differing exit exam traditions (statewide versus school-based) are compared. Consistent with other recent research findings, the potential influences of statewide exit exams on teaching and learning processes can be detected for mathematics, but not for German or biology. In particular, these influences show in the fact that teachers whose students have to take a statewide exit exam are less responsive to students’ interests regarding the choice of topics in the classroom, perceive a tendency to narrow the delivered curriculum and increase cooperation with other teachers. In addition, both teachers and students feel a higher pressure to perform and perceive their roles to be different −they see themselves as allies preparing for an externally set exam. Teachers also tend to feel “de-professionalized”. In those areas where statewide exams do seem to affect schooling, most of the results are consistent with what was intended by the authorities when they introduced the exams, and there are only few unintended side-effects. From a governance perspective, however, a general capacity of statewide exit exams to move schooling in a desired direction remains rather doubtful, particularly considering the fact that the exam procedures that have recently been implemented in the German states are very heterogeneous and only partly standardized.
