This paper reports on an experimental and numerical investigation aimed at understanding the mechanisms of rotating instabilities in a low speed axial flow compressor. The phenomena of rotating instabilities in the current compressor were first identified with an experimental study. Then, an unsteady numerical method was applied to confirm the phenomena and to interrogate the physical mechanisms behind them. The experimental study was conducted with high-resolution pressure measurements at different clearances, employing a double phase-averaging technique. The numerical investigation was performed with an unsteady 3-D Navier-Stokes method that solves for the entire blade row. The current study reveals that a vortex structure forms near the leading edge plane. This vortex is the result of interactions among the classical tip-clearance flow, axially reversed endwall flow, and the incoming flow. The vortex travels from the suction side to the pressure side of the passage at roughly half of the rotor speed. The formation and movement of this vortex seem to be the main causes of unsteadiness when rotating instability develops. Due to the nature of this vortex, the classical tip-clearance flow does not spill over into the following blade passage. This behavior of the tip-clearance flow is why the compressor operates in a stable mode even with the rotating instability, unlike traditional rotating stall phenomena.

A numerical investigation has been conducted to determine the effects of self-excited tip-leakage flow unsteadiness, upstream stator wakes, and downstream blade row interactions on the performance prediction of a low speed research compressor rotor. Calculations included a single blade-row rotor configuration as well as two multi-blade row configurations: one where the rotor was modeled with an upstream stator and a second where the rotor was modeled with a downstream stator. Steady-state and time accurate calculations were performed using a RANS solver and the results were compared with detailed experimental data at operating conditions corresponding to the compressor design point, near stall and a mid-point between the two. Differences in the performance predictions between the three configurations were then used to determine the effect of the upstream stator wakes and the downstream blade row interactions. Results obtained show that for this compressor with rather large tip clearance, time-accurate calculations are a vast improvement over steady-state calculations, but the upstream stator wakes and the downstream blade row interactions have only a small effect on the numerical solution. In this paper, changes in the rotor flow field due to the upstream and downstream stators are investigated and discussed to explain the limited impact of the stator wakes and downstream blade row interactions on this tip dominated flow. In addition, the unsteady nature of the rotor tip vortex at near stall conditions is discussed to explain the improvement of time accurate analysis over steady state computations.

Experimental and numerical analyses were performed on a low-speed axial compressor rotor to investigate the aerodynamic and acoustic effects of axial skewed slots casing treatment on the rotating instability. The experimental results showed that the stall margin could be improved by 8.0% and the frequency broadband hump owing to the rotating instability was suppressed effectively. In the noise spectra, the two dominant broadband humps on both sides of the blade-passing frequency also reduced in amplitude. Full-annulus unsteady computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed near the design condition. Time- and frequency-domain analyses as well as a proper orthogonal decomposition method were applied to obtain the oscillation, frequency, energy and flow characteristics of the rotating instability. Axial skewed slots casing treatment causes a distinct reduction in the amplitude of the pressure fluctuations and frequency spectra with a decrease in the energy of the rotating instability modes. The slots alleviated the tip flow blockage by the periodic injection and removal of the fluid from the passage, which enabled a high tip clearance flow downstream with little impingement on the neighbouring blade tip.

Solidity in compressors is defined as the ratio of the aerodynamic chord over the peripheral distance between two adjacent blades, the pitch. This parameter is simply the inverse of the pitch-to-chord ratio generally used in turbines. Solidity must be selected at the earliest design phase, i.e. at the level of the meridional design and represents a crucial step in the whole design process. Most of the existing studies on this topic rely on low-speed compressor cascade correlations from Carter or Lieblein. The aim of this work is to update those correlations for state-of-the-art controlled diffusion blades, and extend their application to high Mach number flow regimes more typical of modern compressors. Another objective is also to improve the physical understanding of the solidity effect on compressor performance and stability. A numerical investigation has been performed using the commercial software FINE/Turbo. Two different blade profiles were selected and investigated in the compressible flow regime as an extension to the low-speed data on which the correlations are based. The first cascade uses a standard double circular arc profile, extensively referenced in the literature, while the second configuration uses a state-of-the-art CDB, representative of low pressure compressor stator mid-span profile. Both profiles have been designed with the same inlet and outlet metal angles and the same maximum thickness but the camber and thickness distributions, the stagger angle and the leading edge geometry of the CDB have been optimized. The determination of minimum loss, optimum incidence and deviation is addressed and compared with existing correlations for both configurations and various Mach numbers that have been selected in order to match typical booster stall and choke operating conditions. The emphasis is set on the minimum loss performance at mid-span. The impact of the solidity on the operating range and the stability of the cascade are also studied.

As turbine manufacturers strive to develop machines that are more efficient, one area of focus has been the control of secondary flows. To a large extent these methods have been developed through the use of computational fluid dynamics and detailed measurements in linear and annular cascades and proven in full scale engine tests. This study utilises 5-hole probe measurements in a low speed, model turbine in conjunction with computational fluid dynamics to gain a more detailed understanding of the influence of a generic endwall design on the structure of secondary flows within the rotor. This work is aimed at understanding the influence of such endwalls on the structure of secondary flows in the presence of inlet skew, unsteadiness and rotational forces. Results indicate a 0.4% improvement in rotor efficiency as a result of the application of the generic non-axisymmetric endwall contouring. CFD results indicate a clear weakening of the cross passage pressure gradient, but there are also indications that custom endwalls could further improve the gains. Evidence of the influence of endwall contouring on tip clearance flows is also presented.

Rotating instability (RI) occurs at off-design conditions in axial compressors, predominantly in rotor configurations with large tip clearances. Characteristic spectral signatures with side-by-side peaks below the blade passing frequency (BPF) are typically referred to RI located in the clearance region next to the leading edge (LE). Each peak can be assigned to a dominant circumferential mode. RI is the source of the clearance noise (CN) and an indicator for critical operating conditions. Earlier studies at an annular cascade pointed out that RI modes of different circumferential orders occur stochastically distributed in time and independently from each other, which is contradictory to existing explanations of RI. Purpose of the present study is to verify this generally with regard to axial rotor configurations. Experiments were conducted on a laboratory axial fan stage mainly using unsteady pressure measurements in a sensor ring near the rotor LE. A mode decomposition based on cross spectral matrices was used to analyze the spectral and modal RI patterns upstream of the rotor. Additionally, a time-resolved analysis based on a spatial discrete-Fourier-transform (DFT) was applied to clarify the temporal characteristics of the RI modes and their potential interrelations. The results and a comparison with the previous findings on the annular cascade corroborate a new hypothesis about the basic RI mechanism. This hypothesis implies that instability waves of different wavelengths are generated stochastically in a shear layer resulting from a backflow in the tip clearance region.

The demand of increasing pressure ratios for modern high pressure compressors leads to decreasing blade heights in the last stages. As tip clearances cannot be reduced to any amount and minimum values might be necessary for safety reasons, the tip clearance ratios of the last stages can reach values notably higher than current norms. This can be intensified by a compressor running in transient operations where thermal differences can lead to further growing clearances. For decades, the detrimental effects of large clearances on an axial compressor’s operating range and efficiency are known and investigated. The ability of circumferential casing grooves in the rotor casing to improve the compressor’s operating range has also been in the focus of research for many years. Their simplicity and ease of installation are one reason for their continuing popularity nowadays, where advanced methods to increase the operating range of an axial compressor are known. In a previous paper [1], three different circumferential groove casing treatments were investigated in a single stage environment in the Low Speed Axial Research Compressor at TU Dresden. One of these grooves was able to notably improve the operating range and the efficiency of the single stage compressor at very large rotor tip clearances (5% of chord length). In this paper, the results of tests with this particular groove type in a three stage environment in the Low Speed Axial Research Compressor are presented. Two different rotor tip clearance sizes of 1.2% and 5% of tip chord length were investigated. At the small tip clearance, the grooves are almost neutral. Only small reductions in total pressure ratio and efficiency compared to the solid wall can be observed. If the compressor runs with large tip clearances it notably benefits from the casing grooves. Both, total pressure and efficiency can be improved by the grooves in a similar extent as in single stage tests. Five-hole probe measurements and unsteady wall pressure measurements show the influence of the groove on the flow field. With the help of numerical investigations the different behavior of the grooves at the two tip clearance sizes will be discussed.
