In order to master and improve the quality and properties of the final products, the major industrial challenge lies in the possibility of controlling the morphology, size of microstructures that reside within the molded pieces, as well as their defects; this is the fundamental reason according to which we are more and more interested in mastering the growth and germination of such alloys, as well as the developing structures, at the time of solidification process. The modeling reveals as a valuable aid in the mastery of the formation of such heterogeneousness: segregation cells that are incompatible with industrial requirements. The whole work focuses upon the modeling of the segregation phenomenon of the four hypoeutectic alloys, Al1%Sn, Al2%Sn, Al3%Sn and Al4%Sn, as well as the tin effect upon certain mechanical properties of aluminum. Usually, the microstructure and mechanical  behavior of such alloys as Al-Sn are directly influenced by some parameters such as composition, cooling velocity and homogenization process.

Most gas barrier films produce cracks that lead to a significant loss of gas barrier integrity when strain is applied. In order to fabricate stretchable gas barrier films with low water permeability and high endurance after stretching, we used polydiallydimethylammonium (PDDA) mixed with graphene oxide (GO) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) mixed with montmorillonite (MMT). These films were manufactured by layer-by-layer assembly on an Ecoflex/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate with pre-strain applied. A total of 30 layers of PDDA (GO)/PVA (MMT) coated on the substrate exhibited a low water vapor transmission rate of 2.5 × 10−2 g/m2 day after 100 cycles of stretching (30% strain). In addition, they exhibited a high light transmittance of 86.54%. Thus, the prepared stretchable gas barrier film has potential applications as a barrier film in transparent and stretchable electronic devices.

Chitin nanofibers were prepared from commercially available dried chitin powders by different simple mechanical methods under acid conditions after removal of minerals and proteins. The fibrillated chitin samples were observed by FE-SEM and there was a fine network structure formed by chitin nanofibes with a width of approximately 10-50 nm and high aspect ratio. The mechanical treatment under acid conditions was crucial to facilitate the fibrillation of chitin fibers into nanofibers. The high pressure homogenization in combination with grinding was used to obtain the most transparent chitin nanofibers sheet with a transmittance of 88.5% and tensile strength of 82.34MPa, and the sheet even had a Young’s modulus of 6.17GPa. Thus, chitin nanofibers provide excellent potential as reinforcement of transparent flexible composites to improve the properties of nanocomposites.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative adhesion is still a consequence of intra-abdominal surgeries, which results in bowel obstruction and abdominopelvic pain. Bowel anastomosis as a common abdominal surgery has the incidence of leakage in up to 30% of patients that increase morbidity and mortality. Due to similar pathways of adhesion formation and wound healing, it is important to find a way to reduce adhesions and anastomosis leakage. AIM: This study was designed to compare antiadhesive as well as anastomosis healing improvement effect of honey and polylactide anti-adhesive barrier film. METHODS: Forty-five rabbits divided into three groups of honey, adhesion barrier film, and control group in an animal study. Under a similar condition, rabbits underwent resection and anastomosis of cecum under general anaesthesia. In the first group, honey was used at the anastomosis site, in the second one polylactide adhesion barrier film utilised, and the third one was the control group. Adhesion, as well as anastomosis leakage, was assessed after 21 days. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) for Windows version 25. RESULTS: Three groups of 15 rabbits were studied. The results showed that mean peritoneal adhesion score (PAS) was lower in the honey group (1.67) in comparison to the adhesion barrier film group (3.40) and the control group (6.33). CONCLUSION: Bio-absorbable polylactide barrier has an anti-adhesion effect but is not suitable for intestinal anastomosis in rabbits. Further studies needed to evaluate these effects on human beings.
