We report here on the utilization of variable band gap conjugated polymers for optoelectronic redox applications comprising organic photovoltaics, color tunable light emitting diodes, and electrochromics. For the evaluation of morphology in photovoltaicdevices, atomic force microscopy, and optical microscopy provided direct visualization of the blend film structure. The evolution of the morphology in two and three component blends incorporating poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenlenevinylene] (MEH-PPV), poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA), and [6, 6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) was investigated. It was found that while insulating PMMA can be used to modulate the phase separation in these blends, a bicontinuous network of donor and acceptor was required to achieve the best device results. Similarily, a MEH-PPVcopolymer with a decreased conjugation length has been used for investigating inter- and intramolecular photoinduced charge transfer in the presence of PMMA and PCBM.We fabricated MEH-PPV/PCBM solar cells that have power conversion efficiencies up to 1.5% with a range of 0.7–1.5%, dependent on the nature of the MEH-PPV used. This further indicates that in addition to blend morphology, polymer structure is critical for optimizing device performance. To this end, the concept of an ideal donor for photovoltaic devices based on poly[2,5-di(3,7-dialkoxy)-cyanoterephthalylidene] is described and two donor-acceptor polymers based on cyanovinylene (CNV) and dioxythiophene are discussed as representative examples of soluble narrow band gap polymers synthesized in our group. For light emitting applications, utilization of two blue emitting conjugated polymers poly (9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) and poly[(9,9-dihexylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(9,ethyl-3,6-carbazole)] (PFH-PEtCz)is presented for a color tunable polymer light emitting diode that emits orange, green, and blue light with a voltage range of 7–10 V as a function of the total conjugated polymer content in PMMA and is attributed to the phase separation between the conjugated polymers. Finally, the narrow band gap conjugated polymer, poly[bis(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene-dihexyl)]-cyanovinylene has been characterized for its electrochromic properties, illustrating the multifunctional nature of variable band gap conjugated polymers.

Ca8Mg7Si9N22 crystallizes in a tetragonal space group P42/nmc (No. 137) with a unit cell of a = 7.3271(11) Å and c = 10.336(2) Å. Ca8Mg7Si9N22:Eu2+ shows a narrow-band blue emission peaking at 400 nm with an intriguing bandwidth ∼34 nm and shows remarkably high thermal quenching resistance, maintaining 92% photoluminescence emission intensity at 420 K and 75% at 700 K of that measured at room temperature.

Recent years, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have attracted tremendous attentions for their unique characteristics for solid-state lighting (SSL) and thin-film display applications. The pure and tunable spectra of QDs make it possible to simultaneously achieve excellent color-rendering properties and high luminous efficiency (LE) when combining colloidal QDs with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Due to its solution-based synthetic route, QDs are impractical for fabrication of LED. QDs have to be incorporated into polymer matrix, and the mixture is dispensed into the LED mold or placed onto the LED to fabricate the QD–LEDs, which is known as the packaging process. In this process, the compatibility of QDs' surface ligands with the polymer matrix should be ensured, otherwise the poor compatibility can lead to agglomeration or surface damage of QDs. Besides, combination of QDs–polymer with LED chip is a key step that converts part of blue light into other wavelengths (WLs) of light, so as to generate white light in the end. Since QD-LEDs consist of three or more kinds of QDs, the spectra distribution should be optimized to achieve a high color-rendering ability. This requires both theoretical spectra optimization and experimental validation. In addition, to prolong the reliability and lifetime of QD-LEDs, QDs have to be protected from oxygen and moisture penetration. And the heat generation inside the package should be well controlled because high temperature results in QDs' thermal quenching, consequently deteriorates QD-LEDs' performance greatly. Overall, QD-LEDs' packaging and applications present the above-mentioned technical challenges. A profound and comprehensive understanding of these problems enables the advancements of QD-LEDs' packaging processes and designs. In this review, we summarized the recent progress in the packaging of QD-LEDs. The wide applications of QD-LEDs in lighting and display were overviewed, followed by the challenges and the corresponding progresses for the QD-LEDs' packaging. This is a domain in which significant progress has been achieved in the last decade, and reporting on these advances will facilitate state-of-the-art QD-LEDs' packaging and application technologies.
