In this study, we prepared cobalt (Co) ion-modified ZnO nanowires using hydrothermal synthesis with zinc acetate dehydrate and Co (II) acetate hydrate precursors in ethanol solutions. Their morphological and optical properties were investigated with varying Co precursor concentration. The morphological changes of the ZnO nanowires depended positively on the concentration of the Co precursor. The ZnO nanowires showed modified crystal orientations and nanostructure shapes depending on the Co concentration in the solutions. Variations in the optical properties of the Co ion-modified ZnO nanowires could be explained by the interaction of the Co ions with the band electrons, oxygen vacancies, and zinc interstitials. The overall growth and characteristics of ZnO nanowires synthesized in solutions containing low levels of Co ions were related to Co doping into the ZnO bulks. In solutions containing high levels of Co ions, these were additionally related to the Co oxide cluster.

Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) is one of the ceramic materials with high potential in many areas of modern technologies. ZrO2 doped with 8 wt.% (~4.5 mol%) Y2O3 is a commercial powder used for obtaining stabilized zirconia materials (8 wt.% YSZ) with high temperature resistance and good ionic conductivity. During recent years it was reported the co-doping with multiple rare earth elements has a significant influence on the thermal, mechanical and ionic conductivity of zirconia, due complex grain size segregation and enhanced oxygen vacancies mobility. Different methods have been proposed to synthesize these materials. Here, we present the hydrothermal synthesis of 8 wt.% (~4.5 mol%) YSZ co-doped with 4, 6 and 8 wt.% La2O3, Nd2O3, Sm2O3 and Gd2O3 respectively. The crystalline phases formed during their thermal treatment in a large temperature range were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The evolution of phase composition vs. thermal treatment temperatures shows as a major trend the formation at temperatures >1000 °C of a cubic solid solutions enriched in the rare earth oxide used for co-doping as major phase. The first results on the thermal conductivities and impedance measurements on sintered pellets obtained from powders co-doped with 8 wt.% Y and 6% Ln (Ln = La, Nd, Sm and Gd) and the corresponding activation energies are presented and discussed. The lowest thermal conductivity was obtained for La co-doped 8 wt.% YSZ while the lowest activation energy for ionic conduction for Gd co-doped 8 wt.% YSZ materials.

Pure and Cobalt-doped ZnO nanostructures have been synthesized by a hydrothermal process. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis diffusion reflectance spectra (DRS) and X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS). The structure and morphology analyses show that Co doping can influence the nanostructures morphology, but cannot change the crystal structures of ZnO samples. The DRS spectra showed that Co dopant enhanced the ability of visible light absorption of the ZnO samples

Natural biological hard tissues are nanocomposites of proteins and calcium hydroxyapatite (HAp) with superior strength and bioresorbabilities. Nanometer scale hyroxyapatite is the key material to manufacture bioresorbable bone substitute. An attempt was conducted to synthesis nano-crystalline hydroxyapatite with a hydrothermal chemical method. The prepared nano-crystalline HAp was characterized for its phase purity and nanoscale morphological structure by XRD, TEM and FTIR. The obtained results indicated that hydrothermal synthesized nano-crystalline HAp was pure single phased HAp with a diameter of 20 to 50nm and length range between 50 to 200nm and each HAp particle was observed to be a monocrystal of HAp. It’s suggested that hydrothermal treatment may be an effective method to get pure and nice crystallized nano-sized stoichiometric hydroxyapatite.
