Wheel–rail contact creates high stresses in both rails and wheels, which can lead to different damage, such as plastic deformation, wear and rolling contact fatigue (RCF). It is important to use high-quality steels that are resistant to these damages. Mechanical properties and failure of steels are determined by various microstructural features, such as grain size, phase fraction, as well as spatial distribution and morphology of these phases in the microstructure. To quantify the mechanical behavior of bainitic rail steels, uniaxial tensile experiments and hardness measurements were performed. In order to characterize the influence of microstructure on the mechanical behavior, various microscopy techniques, such as light optical microscopy (LOM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), were used. Three bainitic grades industrially known as B360, B1400 plus and Cr-Bainitic together with commonly used R350HT pearlitic grade were studied. Influence of isothermal bainitic heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the bainitic grades was investigated and compared with B360, B1400 plus, Cr-Bainitic and R350HT in as-received (AR) condition from the industry. The results show that the carbide-free bainitic steel (B360) after an isothermal heat treatment offers the best mechanical performance among these steels due to a very fine, carbide-free bainitic microstructure consisting of bainitic ferrite and retained austenite laths.

The effect of austenitizing temperature and aging treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of two new cold-rolled automotive steel plates (20Mn2Cr and 20Mn2CrNb) was investigated by using isothermal heat treatment, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, microhardness tester, and tensile testing machine. The results show that as the austenitizing temperature increased, the original austenite grain sizes of both steels increased. The original austenite grain size of 20Mn2CrNb was smaller than that of 20Mn2Cr. The microhardness of 20Mn2CrNb gradually decreased with increasing aging temperature, while the hardness of 20Mn2Cr varied irregularly. The mechanical properties of 20Mn2Cr were better than those of 20Mn2CrNb under the same heat-treatment process. The effect of heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties was related to the martensite content, dislocation density, and precipitation of second-phase particles.

Abstract The aim of the work was to produce a nanobainitic structure in the commercial bearing steel - 100CrMnSi6-4 and to characterize its structure and mechanical properties. In order to produce this structure the austempering heat treatment was performed, with parameters that have been selected on the basis of dilatometric measurements of phase transformation kinetics in steel. The heat treatment process was performed in laboratory as well as in industrial furnaces. The obtained structure was characterized using transmission electron microscopy. In order to investigate the effect of the microstructure parameters on the material’s mechanical properties, the hardness, impact strength and static tensile tests have been conducted.

The semi-solid slurries of the CoCrCuFeNi high entropy alloy (HEA) were fabricated through the recrystallization and partial melting (RAP) process by cold-rolling and partial remelting. The temperature range of the semi-solid region and the relationship between the liquid fraction and the temperature were determined by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve. The effect of isothermal temperature and holding time on the evolution of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the rolled samples was analyzed. The results show that the microstructure was significantly deformed, and the tensile strength has been increased by 107% after 63% rolling deformation of the CoCrCuFeNi high entropy alloy (HEA). The high-entropy alloy after cold rolling was maintained at 1150 and 1300 ° C for 20, 30, 60, and 120 minutes respectively, the plasticity has been improved compared with the rolled high entropy alloy. The optimal plasticity was reached 13.7% and 7.9% at 1150 ℃ and 1300℃ for 30 minutes, respectively. After semi-solid isothermal heat treatment, the grain morphology changed from dendritic of as-cast or rolled to spherulite and the grain size increased significantly with time and the holding temperature increased.

The features of microstructure and mechanical properties of the aerospace high strength steel were studied after the implementation of various heat treatment modes: conventional oil quenching and tempering, quenching-partitioning, austempering. The dependence of the mechanical properties on the tempering temperature was determined. The basic patterns of the formation of mechanical properties during the implementation of isothermal heat treatment were considered. The optimal heat treatment conditions for the studied steel were established.
