Sufficient experience has been gained during the past five years to suggest an extended application of microreplication and scanning electron microscopy to problems of forensic science. The author's research was originally initiated with a view to develop a non-destructive method for identification of materials that went into objects of art, notably ivory and ivories. This was followed by a very specific application to the identification and duplication of the kinds of materials from animal teeth and tusks which two centuries ago went into the fabrication of the ivory dentures of George Washington. Subsequently it became apparent that a similar method of microreplication and SEM examination offered promise for a whole series of problems pertinent to art, technology and science. Furthermore, what began primarily as an application to solid substances has turned out to be similarly applicable to soft tissue surfaces such as mucous membranes and skin, even in cases of acute, chronic and precancerous epithelial surface changes, and to post-mortem identification of specific structures pertinent to forensic science.

Ultrastructural changes have been shown to occur in the urinary bladder epithelium (urothelium) during the life span of humans. With increasing age, the luminal surface becomes more flexible and develops simple microvilli-like processes. Furthermore, the specialised asymmetric structure of the luminal plasma membrane is relatively more prominent in the young than in the elderly. The nature of the changes at the luminal surface is now explored by lectin-mediated adsorption visualised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Samples of young adult (21-31 y old) and elderly (58-82 y old) urothelia were fixed in buffered 2% glutaraldehyde for 10 m and washed with phosphate buffered saline (PBS) containing Ca++ and Mg++ at room temperature. They were incubated overnight at 4°C in 0.1 M ammonium chloride in PBS to block any remaining aldehyde groups. The samples were then allowed to stand in PBS at 37°C for 2 h before incubation at 37°C for 30 m with lectins. The lectins used were concanavalin A (Con A), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and pokeweed mitogen (PWM) at a concentration of 500 mg/ml in PBS at pH 7.A.

Almost all orthodontic wires suffer from corrosion as they are intra-orally engaged. This chemical structure alteration appears on the surface of these wires, surface topography can be easily visualised with scanning electron microscope method. The aim of our study was to assess the intraoral corrosion of the retrieved orthodontic Ni-Ti archwires. Archwire retrieval procedure yielded approximately 30 retrieved wires, placed intra-orally for 1-5 months. SEM analysis was performed and surface changes were interpreted. Our SEM results showed, that surface corrosion and pitting can be seen on the surface of retrieved Ni-Ti wires, the depth of corrosion depends on the time wires have been engaged in the oral cavity. With regards of metal liberation consequently surface corrosion, practitioners should be avare of these chemical changes which can affect the resistence of the orthodontic appliance and patient health.

Rosacea is a facial inflammatory dermatosis that is linked with various systemic illnesses. With regards to the eye, rosacea patients have been described to manifest ocular surface changes, such as blepharitis and conjunctivitis. However, studies that examine the association of rosacea with a wider array of ocular diseases are limited. Thus, our aim was to identify the range of ocular comorbidities in the Korean patient population and create a reference data set. A multi-institutional, case-control study was conducted, where 12,936 rosacea patients and an equal number of sex- and age-matched control subjects were extracted over a 12-year period. We were able to discover a notable association between rosacea and blepharitis (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 3.44; 95% confidence interval, 2.71–4.36, p < 0.001), conjunctivitis (aOR 1.65; 95% CI, 1.50–1.82, p < 0.001), glaucoma (aOR 1.93; 95% CI, 1.70–2.20, p < 0.001), dry eye syndrome (aOR 1.89; 95% CI, 1.70–2.09, p < 0.001), and chalazion (aOR 3.26; 95% CI, 1.41–7.57, p = 0.006) from logistic regression analysis. Female subjects and individuals younger than 50 exclusively showed higher odds for chalazion. Our study suggests that ocular comorbidities (i.e., glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, and chalazion as well as blepharitis and conjunctivitis) are more prevalent among Koreans with rosacea. Clinicians should proactively check ocular symptoms in rosacea and employ joint care with an ophthalmologist in cases of need.

The Mg-1wt.%Ca alloy was fabricated using powder metallurgy method. The anodizing process were done by using different voltage (5V, 15V, 25V) and concentration of KOH (0.1M, 0.5M, 1.0M). The surface changes on PM Mg/1wt.%Ca resulted by anodizing was analyzed using SEM-EDX and XRD pattern. Meanwhile, surface hardness was measured by micro-Vickers hardness machine. The experiment found different XRD pattern between all non-anodized and anodized samples. The study found that increasing the voltage will increase the hardness while increasing KOH concentration reduced the hardness. The relation of the hardness and oxide film formation can be analyzed using SEM-EDX and XRD pattern. The optimum value for voltage, KOH concentration and hardness are 25V, 0.1M and 27.2 HV. The XRD detect the changes in PM Mg/1wt.% Ca indicates the oxide film formation.
