Dyslexia is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in learning to read despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence and a balanced sociocultural background.  Dyslexia is the most common type of learning disorder.  Reading difficulties affect a child’s academic achievement.  As primary eye care practitioners, optometrists have a role in attending to patients who may present with symptoms indicative of dyslexia, therefore an understanding of dyslexia will be beneficial to the optometrist.  This paper presents an overview of dyslexia and discusses its prevalence, aetiology, classifications, neural pathways involved in reading, theories, neuro-imaging techniques and management options. The role of optometry in the multidisciplinary management of dyslexia is discussed.  (S Afr Optom 2011 70(2) 89-98)

Deep brain stimulation therapy is an effective therapy for selected patients with movement disorders. The procedure is relatively safe, but complications related to the surgical procedure or implanted hardware can occur. The common complications include hemorrhage, infarct, infection, and confusion. Noninfectious cyst formation around the DBS lead is a rare but potential complication of this procedure, which can occur several weeks to months after DBS lead implantation. This chapter describes a case of noninfectious cyst formation at the tip of DBS lead in a patient with essential tremor. Clinical presentation, role of imaging, and the management options for this rare complication are discussed. This case also illustrates the importance of post-DBS imaging in suspected cases with new or unexplained symptoms.

Systemic cancers produce substantial neurological morbidity when they spread to the spinal epidural space, producing epidural spinal cord compression—a neurological emergency. Less often, metastases spread directly to spinal cord parenchyma to manifest as intramedullary spinal cord metastasis or result in peripheral nerve dysfunction via compression of the brachial, lumbosacral, or, rarely, the cervical plexus. This chapter reviews the clinical manifestations and risk factors for development of these entities, the diagnostic approach, management options including the role of surgery, radiation (including stereotactic body radiation therapy), and chemotherapy, as well as the neurological prognosis.

This workshop was convened to address common issues and concerns associated with risk management of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The talks described the tools and policies for key Japanese, Australian, German, and U.S. regulatory agencies. The agencies participating in the workshop were responsible for the regulation of various substances including: chemicals, pesticides, environmental contamination, pharmaceuticals, and food additives. The panel also described the role of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in standardizing the tools and validation of testing and screening methods. The panel also included nongovernmental organizations presenting the views of the World Wildlife Fund, and the chemical industry from industrialized nations; each organization described its concerns and proposed approaches to risk management of EDCs. This summary highlights the most important areas of common points of view of government, industry, and environmentalists. We also try to identify issues upon which viewpoints diverge.

AbstractMalignant pleural effusion (MPE) represents advanced metastatic malignancy and is associated with poor median survival. Incidence remains high and continues to rise, in part due to changing population demographics. This therefore represents a significant health care burden. Management is predominantly palliative in nature and multiple interventions are available within conventional treatment paradigms, all of which are proven to result in statistically significant patient benefit. This article further explores the methods available in the management of MPE along with the pitfalls, complications, and alternatives. Recent advances within the field are discussed with an exploration of likely future directions, including the role of ultrasound as a prospective predictor and the role of intrapleural fibrinolytic therapy.
