Successful verification and validation is crucial to build confidence in the application of coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics - Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM). Model verification includes ensuring a mesh-independent solution, which poses a major difficulty in CFD-DEM due to the complicated solution relationship with computational cell size. In this paper, we investigate the theoretical relationship between the solution and computational cell size by tracing the effects of a change in cell size through the mathematical model. The porosity profile for simulations of fixed-particle beds is determined to be Gaussian, and the average and standard deviation of the representative distribution are reported against cell size. We find the standard deviation of bed porosity increases exponentially as the cell size is reduced, and the drag calculations are very sensitive to changes in the porosity standard deviation, resulting in an exponential change in expected drag when the cell size is small relative to the particle diameter. The divided volume fraction method of porosity calculation is shown to be superior to the centred volume fraction method, as it reduces the porosity standard deviation. The sensitivity of five popular drag laws to changes in the porosity profile is presented, and the Ergun and Beetstra drag laws are shown to be the least sensitive to changes in the cell size.

The particle circulation rate and gas–solid contacting efficiency are important parameters for the project of spouted beds, applied in many industrial processes. Due to the restrictions found in the identification of flow regimes through visual observation, new techniques have been developed to obtain a better gas and particle dynamics description, necessary for the evaluation of these parameters. One of these techniques has been the CFD simulation. In this work the pattern of solids and gas flows in a spouted bed was numerically simulated using a 3D Eulerian multiphase model. Soybean particles had been used in the attainment of data of pressure drop fluctuation and power spectrum as a function of gas velocity in an experimental apparatus. The 3D simulated solids volume fraction profiles allow the identification of the flow regimes showing a good agreement with the experimental data.

In nature bio-composites such as nacre show remarkable mechanical properties due to their complex hierarchical structure and high-volume fraction of its hard component. These composites are highly interesting for structural applications in different branches of industries for mechanical engineering and process technology. The aim of this work was to provide a scalable method for the production of highly filled composites by mimicking the structure of bio-composites. Therefore, composites from iron oxide (Fe2O3) and SBC-polymer (styrene-butadiene block copolymer) were fabricated by using a miniaturized spouted bed with an innovative fluidization gap design. Small iron oxide particles (25–45 μm) were fluidized in the spouted bed and coated with a polymer solution via a bottom spray nozzle. Afterwards the coated granules were hot-pressed and the mechanical properties of the obtained composites were tested. By this method composites with a bending strength of up to 6 MPa were fabricated. Although the mechanical properties of these artificial composites are still lower than those of the natural role models, it was shown that the spouted bed is a suitable technique for the fabrication of highly filled composites. For further optimization of the mechanical properties more complex and tailor-made starting materials will be used in following studies.

Abstract In this work, a comparative study of Euler-Euler and Euler-Lagrange approaches for modeling gas-solid flows in the multiple-spouted bed has been carried out to investigate the hydrodynamics of gas-solid flows. The influence of inlet gas velocity on the hydrodynamics of gas-solid flows in the multiple-spouted bed is investigated as well. Hydrodynamic characteristics of gas-solid flows such as flow behaviors, solid volume fraction, particle velocity and particle trajectory are analyzed and discussed in detail, providing some basic mechanism analysis of the gas-solids in the multiple-spouted bed. It is found that the central spout gas jet is a little confined by the auxiliary gas jets, and the hole-to-hole synergy is quite obvious when the auxiliary spout gas velocity is higher than the central spout gas velocity. When central/auxiliary gas velocity is 10/20 m/s, the maximum vertical particle velocities predicted by Euler-Euler and Euler-Lagrange approaches are 452 mm/s and 721 mm/s at the height of 10 mm respectively. A typical cycle period of a single particle is about 1.25 s, and the residence time in the spout regions is about 0.14 s in one cycle period in auxiliary dominant pattern. The curves of bed expansion height versus time calculated by Euler-Lagrange approach rise and fall periodically, while the curves calculated by Euler-Euler approach keep steady with little change. It is much easier for particles to be blew in the multiple-spouted bed using the Euler-Lagrange approach. The simulation results obtained from two models can provide some guidance for modifying the multiple-spouted bed to optimize physical operations such as drying and coating in the multiple-spouted bed.
