Social media is a valuable tool in the practice of medicine, but it can also be an area of ‘treacherous waters’ for medical students. Those in their upper years of study are off-site and scattered broadly, undertaking clinical rotations; thus, in-house (university lecture) sessions are impractical. Nonetheless, during these clinical years students are generally high users of social media technology, putting them at risk of harm if they lack appropriate ethical awareness. We created a compulsory session in social media ethics (Doctoring and Social Media) offered in two online modes (narrated PowerPoint file or YouTube video) to fourth- and fifth-year undergraduate medical students. The novelty of our work was the use of SurveyMonkey® to deliver the file links, as well as to take attendance and deliver a post-session performance assessment. All 167 students completed the course and provided feedback. Overall, 73% Agreed or Strongly Agreed the course session would aid their professionalism skills and behaviours, and 95% supported delivery of the curriculum online. The most frequent areas of learning occurred in the following topics: email correspondence with patients, medical photography, and awareness of medical apps. SurveyMonkey® is a valuable and efficient tool for curriculum delivery, attendance taking, and assessment activities.

This chapter demonstrates the potential of Robin Collingwood’s understanding of sharing thoughts in terms of reenactment for an understanding of reenactment in dance as a rethinking of artistic thought. Reenacting these thoughts is not a matter of (an attempt at) redoing the thinking process of the choreographers who created these dances, but of grasping the logic of thought embodied in the dance. Furthermore, this chapter shows how Collingwood’s understanding of reenactment is relevant to transformations in modes of engaging with information made possible by new media technology. These developments highlight aspects of corporeal performance that previously went unnoticed. Reenactments in dance provide a perspective on what is involved in performing these modes of engaging with information provided by media, while also gesturing toward implications in relation to the understanding of what it means to share thoughts, to grasp an idea, and to transmit knowledge.

Around every new media technology debates circle about whether the technology is bringing people socially closer or pushing us further apart. According to popular press accounts, Pokémon GO players are absorbed into a game world on their phone with no attention or interest in the “real” world around them. But coupled with these accounts are stories of people exploring their neighborhoods and of marriage proposals in the midst of Pokémon hunting. This article puts Pokémon GO into a longer context of mobile technologies and sociospatial practice to explore the kinds of social interactions that can emerge around and through the use of Pokémon GO. In particular, the article explores how people can use the platform as both an involvement shield and social catalyst.
