There has been an increase in the incidence of complete edentulism among the elder patients. Complete dentures are the most common and preferred treatment of choice. Complete dentures help in masticatory function and restore the facial shape of the edentulous patients. Fabrication of the complete dentures is, therefore, a very important task for the clinician to ensure patient satisfaction. Errors may occur during the denture fabrication and these are called processing errors. It is a multifactorial process. The aim of the survey is to study the errors that occur during processing of a complete denture. It is a questionnaire based study conducted with a batch of 100 dental students. The questionnaire consisted of 16 questions focused on different fabrication techniques, timing, materials used, etc. by various students. The data collected was represented statistically and discussed. Dough technique was the most preferred method adopted by 39% of the students. Shorter curing cycles produced less defects, but majority of the students used longer cycles (41%). Most of them reported fractures (16%) and microporosities (11%) as defects. We can conclude that there are a few areas of error during the processing of dentures by the dental students. The incidence of these errors, however appears to be low. There is a scope for CAD/CAM complete dentures in the future to eliminate the possibilities of errors.

Edentulism has been a severe public health problem in industrialized countries due to aging and poor oral care. Design and fabrication of the complete dentures are mainly using conventional methods involving an enormous series of clinical and laboratory procedures. Edentulous patients have to make several visits to the clinic for the traditional fabrication of denture. Now the unceasing developments occur over several years. Present-day technological innovations allow the use of various systems with computer‑aided design/computer‑aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) technology to produce complete dentures has seen exponential growth. There are different manufacturing techniques of CAD-CAM complete denture like AvaDent, Wieland digital denture, Baltic denture, DENTC system. CAD-CAM technology requires only two appointments for the patient to get their complete removable denture. A reduction in clinical chair time also shortens the cost of care. The improved fit of the denture was because of fewer processing errors. It simplifies the re-manufacturing of lost/broken prostheses due to the digital storage of denture data. The pre-polymerized acrylic resin used by manufacturers for the fabrication of a denture base delivers excellent fit and strength when compared to conventionally processed bases. It doesnt show any polymerization shrinkage as there is a less residual monomer. Hence, it reduces the potential infections as fewer candida albicans attach to the denture bases. The motive of this article is to highlights the benefits of CAD-CAM technology over conventional denture fabrication.

ABSTRACTBackground: Impression making is one of the critical factors in determining success or failure of complete denture therapy. The precise reproduction of edentulous foundation is essential for retention, stability, and support of the removable prosthesis. Evidence suggests that there is variability in materials and techniques regarding impressions making for complete dentures. There is little published information on studies conducted among Nepalese Prosthodontists. The purpose of this study was to evaluate current materials andmethods for impressions for complete denture prosthodontics in Nepal. Materials & Methods: A questionnaire based survey was conducted among Nepalese Prosthodontists. Ethical approval for the beginning of the study was obtained via Institutional Review Committee, Nepal Medical College. A self-administered anonymous questionnaire was distributed to the participants. Data were analyzed by using frequency distribution.Results: Majority of responses indicated use of irreversible hydrocolloid in stock metal tray for making the preliminary impression. The selective pressure was the predominantly used impression philosophy (78.3%). The most common material for the fabrication of custom trays was autopolymerizing acrylic resin (96.7%). All respondents border molded the custom tray prior to making the final impression. The final impression materials used were zinc oxide eugenol impression paste (73.3%), polyvinylsiloxane (11.7%), polyether (11.7%) and polysulphide (3.3%). Conclusion: Although there is variability in impression materials andtechniques used by Prosthodontists in Nepal for the fabrication of complete dentures, the results showed interesting trends. Most practitioners followed the traditional techniques of complete denture impression procedures.Keywords: complete denture; custom tray; edentulism; impression.

The CAD/CAM technology has been successfully integrated in clinical and laboratory aspects of dental medicine. The present in vitro study focuses on the biochemical interactions between saliva and three types of polymeric resins for occlusal splints. Dental material samples were produced from 3D printed, milled and self-cured resins and were incubated with saliva samples from 20 healthy volunteers. The results showed that the 3D printed and milled polymeric resins did not produce any significant changes in oxidative stress parameters (uric acid, TAC, GGT, OXSR-1) or inflammatory markers (IL-2, IL-6). On the other hand, the self-cured acrylic resin produced a significant decrease in the salivary TAC and uric acid, the most important antioxidants in saliva, affecting the capacity of saliva to protect the oral environment against oxidative stress.

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study is to estimate the fatigue life of five polycrystalline zirconia CAD/CAM ceramic materials used for posterior restoration. This study presents the first time methodology to translate raw data obtained from laboratory test into useful data to predict the clinical life of dental restoration. Methods A typical model for the first molar restored crown is built and transferred into finite element software ANSYS 18.1 flor execution FEA. The materials are: two Y-TZP zirconia (LAVA (LVs), and EVEREST (KVs); IPS e.max CAD; Suprinity PC; and Celtra Duo. Two types of loads are applied, axial load and axial load followed by the sliding motion of lower jaw. The fatigue resistance of various restorative materials is determined. Results Experimental findings show that all the samples have fractured between cusps at the same location, which is slightly off the symmetry fissure plane. For crowns made of LAVA and EVEREST, the life is longer than 10 years under an axial load of 1000 N, while the lives for IPS e.max CAD; Suprinity PC; and Celtra Duo were longer than 10 years under an axial load of 185 N. The life of all-ceramic crown materials was predicted by FEA and found to conform to previous experimental and clinical observations. Conclusion Crowns made of Y-TZP zirconia has superior fatigue resistance compared to other ceramic CAD/CAM materials.

Abstract Background Contemporary dentistry is advancing toward computer-aided design/ computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. But the budding dentists are unaware about the advancement. This survey aims at detecting the level of awareness among the undergraduate students and then correlating those results to modify the future curriculum. Objective The study aims (1) to assess the awareness among the dental undergraduate students and (2) to correlate the level of awareness among the third years, final years, and interns. Sample Selection Study sample consist of 300 students (third year students, final year students, and interns) of A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, Karnataka, India. The information of the survey was collected with the help of a questionnaire. Results More than 70% of the students were aware about the basic functioning of CAD/CAM unit and approximately 74% of the students were unaware about the materials used to fabricate the prosthesis using CAD/CAM technology.

The aim of this study was to assess the displacement of posterior teeth in maxillary complete dentures stored in water at 37°C. Twenty acrylic resin-based maxillary complete dentures were constructed with the anterior teeth arranged in normal overlap and the posterior teeth in Angle class I. Metallic pins were placed on the labial cusp of the first premolars (PM), and on the mesiolabial cusp of the second molars (M). The final acrylic resin pressing was made in a metallic flask with aid of the RS tension system, and polymerized in a moist-hot cycle at 74°C for 9 hours. The dentures were deflasked after cooling in their own polymerizing water or after cooling in polymerizing water plus bench storage for 3 hours, and stored in water at 37°C for periods of 7, 30, and 90 days. Following deflasking and after each storage period tested, the PM-PM (premolar to premolar), M-M (molar to molar), LPM-LM (left premolar to left molar), and RPM-RM (right premolar to right molar) distances were measured with an STM Olympus microscope, with an accuracy of 0.0005 mm. Collected data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%). There was no statistically significant difference for the PM-PM, M-M, and LPM-LM distances after all storage periods when the flask cooling methods were considered. With exception of the RPM-RM distance after the 30-days water plus bench storage period, the other distances remained statistically stable.

BACKGROUND: A gap still exists between in vitro and clinical studies concerning the biocompatibility of the material in the oral environment and their potential to cause immunological undesirable side effects. The uses of glass fibres to improve the mechanical properties of acrylic resin denture base polymers are well documented in vitro. AIM: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of denture base reinforcement using light-cured E- glass fibres mesh on the level of salivary immunoglobulin A (S-IgA) in patients wearing complete dentures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen completely edentulous patients, in need of complete dentures, participated in the study. The patients were divided into two groups (n = 7) according to the treatment protocol. In the first group, patients received conventional heat-cured acrylic resin dentures. In the second group, the mandibular dentures were reinforced using light cured resin impregnated E glass fibres mesh. In both groups, salivary samples were collected using passive drool technique. The level IgA was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique at different time intervals. Statistical analysis was carried out using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey`s post-hoc test and independent t-test. The significant level was set at P ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: Acrylic resin dentures and reinforced ones demonstrated an increase in the mean values of IgA level at the end of the follow-up intervals. And this increase was statistically significant (P ≤ 0.05). Although, the reinforced dentures revealed higher mean values, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05) CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of the present study, the following could be concluded: (1) the insertion of complete dentures induced changes in the level of IgA; and (2) denture base reinforcement using light cured resin impregnated E-glass fibres mesh had a similar effect to that of heat cured acrylic resin on the level of IgA.
