Current research highlights the need to critically examine the factors that can reduce the relationship between work stress and burnout to improve employee health and well-being, as well as to create healthier workplaces. The objective of this study was to enhance insight into the association between stress and job burnout by testing the moderated moderating effect of off-job physical activity (PA) and intrinsic motivation for off-job PA on this association. A total of 369 university staff (70% females) completed a web survey comprising measures of perceived stress, job burnout, PA, and intrinsic motivation for PA. A three-way conditional process model revealed that the “Stress × PA” interaction was significant for cognitive weariness, and that the three-way interaction between “Stress × PA × Intrinsic Motivation for PA” was significantly related to job burnout, and to cognitive weariness. The results highlight (a) that stress was associated with higher levels of job burnout; (b) that under a high stress condition, PA was negatively linked to cognitive weariness; and (c) that intrinsic motivation for PA reinforced the positive moderating effect of PA on the stress–burnout relationship, especially when stress is high.

This study examined the relationships among identified regulation, physical self-concept, global self-concept, and leisure-time physical activity with a sample of middle and high school girls (N = 319) enrolled in physical education. Based on Marsh’s theory of self-concept, it was hypothesized that a) physical self-concept would mediate the relationship between identified regulation and global self-concept and b) physical self-concept would mediate the relationship between identified regulation and leisure-time physical activity. Data analysis revealed a structural model in which physical self-concept mediated the relationship between identified regulation and global self-concept as well as the relationship between identified regulation and leisure-time physical activity. Findings provide support for examining self-concept from a hierarchical and domain-specific perspective. Results also offer greater understanding about one possible mechanism that links physical education to increases in global self-concept and leisure-time physical activity, which are considered important outcomes of quality education.

Abstract Background: Problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) and psychopathological symptoms are great public health concerns in adolescents. Previous studies have shown the associations between PMPU and emotional symptoms, but few studies to explore physical activity (PA) and the neural structures correlated with PA which moderate the relationship between PMPU and emotional symptoms. The aim of current study is to examine the moderating effect of PA and neural basis of such moderating effect on the relation between PMPU and emotional symptoms.Methods: A total of 251 college students underwent magnetic resonance imaging scanning. PMPU, PA and emotional symptom were assessed by self-rating questionnaire for adolescent problematic mobile phone use (SQAPMPU), international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ-C), and depression anxiety stress scale-21 (DASS-21), respectively. A multiple regression model was performed to detect brain structure-gray matter volume associated with PA by voxel-based morphometry method. Moderating analysis was conducted using PROCESS macro in the SPSS software.Results: PA has significantly moderate effect on the association between PMPU with depressive (β = 0.301, p < 0.05), anxiety (β = 0.328, p < 0.05) and stress (β = 0.343, p < 0.05) symptoms. PA was correlated to the GMV of the right fusiform gyrus, the left precuneus, the left insula, and the left triangular part of inferior frontal gyrus. The relation between PMPU and depressive symptom was moderated by greater GMV of left insula.Conclusions: The findings indicate that high levels of PA can reducing the association between PMPU and emotional symptoms, and further find the GMV of left insula which correlated with PA may play a key role on the relationship between PMPU and depressive symptom. The intervention programs of emotional symptoms and insula-based deep brain stimulation is discussed as future study.

Este artículo analizó la relación entre actividad física, condición física y autoconcepto. Un total de 103 escolares (8-12 años) participaron en la evaluación de dichas variables. La condición física se valoró mediante diversas pruebas de la Batería ALPHA-Fitness, el nivel de actividad física se calculó a través del cuestionario PACE y el autoconcepto se midió utilizando la Escala de Autoconcepto de Piers-Harris. Las pruebas estadísticas fueron: T-student, U de Mann-Whitney y Krustal-Wallis. Aquellos físicamente activos tuvieron mejores registros en las dimensiones conductual, intelectual, falta de ansiedad y global. Aquellos con mayor condición física mostraron un mejor autoconcepto físico (p = .013), social (p = .003) y global (p = .085). Aquellos físicamente activos y con mayor condición física tuvieron un mejor autoconcepto intelectual (p = .007), social (p = .010) y global (p = .010). Ser físicamente activo y tener un mayor nivel de condición física podría predecir un autoconcepto más positivo en escolares de la Región de Murcia.Abstract. Physical fitness was assessed through various tests from the ALPHA-Fitness Battery, level of physical activity was calculated through the PACE questionnaire, and self-concept was measured using the Piers-Harris Self-concept Scale. T-student, Mann-Whitney U, and Krustal-Wallis were employed for statistical analysis. Those who were physically active had better values in behavioral and intellectual domains of self-concept, as well as in lack of anxiety, and global self-concept. Those with greater physical fitness showed a better physical (p = .013), social (p = .003) and global (p = .085) self-concept. Those physically active with greater physical fitness had a better intellectual (p = .007), social (p = .010) and global (p = .010) self-concept. Being physically active and having a higher level of fitness could predict a more positive self-concept in schoolchildren of Murcia (Spain).

 Los factores que influyen en los niveles de actividad física son muchos, sin embargo, es necesario identificar aquellos que pueden ser modificables, entre ellos están las variables sociocognitivas. El objetivo general de esta investigación fue analizar la relación entre el autoconcepto físico, motivación, autoeficacia y percepción de barreras para la actividad física, y el bienestar subjetivo con el nivel de actividad física en estudiantes universitarios. Se utilizó un diseño predictivo transversal y participaron 362 estudiantes de Educación Superior de una región del centro sur de Chile. Para responder a los objetivos se utilizó un Modelo de Ecuaciones Estructurales, específicamente el modelo Probit adecuado para regresiones ordinales. Los resultados mostraron que: (1) la autoeficacia para la práctica de actividad física, la falta de tiempo, falta de voluntad, falta de habilidad, el autoconcepto de condición física y el autoconcepto físico de fuerza predijeron significativamente el nivel de práctica de actividad física; (2) el nivel de actividad física media la relación entre las variables sociocognitivas y la afectividad positiva. Es posible concluir que las variables sociocognitivas influyen en los niveles de actividad física de estudiantes universitarios y esta última influye en su bienestar. Abstract: The factors that influence physical activity levels are many, however, it is necessary to identify those that can be modified, among them are the sociocognitive variables. The general objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between physical self-concept, motivation, self-efficacy and perception of barriers to physical activity, and subjective well-being with the level of physical activity in university students. A cross-sectional predictive design was used and 362 students of Higher Education from a region of southern central Chile participated. To respond to the objectives, a Model of Structural Equations was used, specifically the Probit model suitable for ordinal regressions. The results showed that: (1) self-efficacy for the practice of physical activity, lack of time, lack of will, lack of ability, self-concept of physical condition and physical self-concept of strength significantly predicted the level of practice of physical activity; (2) the level of physical activity mediates the relationship between sociocognitive variables and positive affectivity. It is possible to conclude that sociocognitive variables influence the levels of physical activity of university students and the latter influences their well-being.

Empirical evidence has shown a positive relationship between physical training and selected mental health variables. In nonclinical studies the most significant effects of physical exercise have been on self-concept and body image. Two affective variables, depression and anxiety, also seem to be influenced by physical activity but to a lesser degree in this population than with clinical populations. Certain clinical populations appear to benefit cognitively and socially from exercise even though the activity may not be aerobically stressful. Theories that attempt to explain the relationship between fitness and mental health are discussed.
