FeAl20Si20 (wt.%) powders prepared by mechanical alloying from different initial feedstock materials (Fe, Al, Si, FeAl27) were investigated in this study. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nanoindentation techniques were used to analyze microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties (hardness and Young’s modulus). Finite element model was developed to account for the decrease in measured values of mechanical properties of powder particles with increasing penetration depth caused by surrounding soft resin used for embedding powder particles. Progressive homogenization of the powders’ microstructure and an increase of hardness and Young’s modulus with milling time were observed and the time for complete homogenization was estimated.

An Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was prepared with Fe-Fe2O3-Al2O3 powder by a hot press sintering method. The mass ratio was 6:1:2, sintering pressure was 30 MPa, and holding time was 120 min. The raw materials for the powder particles were respectively 1 µm (Fe), 0.5 µm (Fe2O3), and 1 µm (Al2O3) in diameter. The effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was studied. The results showed that Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was formed by in situ reaction at 1300 °C–1500 °C. With the increased sintering temperature, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe/FeAl2O4 composite showed a change law that initially became better and then became worse. The best microstructure and optimal mechanical properties were obtained at 1400 °C. At this temperature, the grain size of Fe and FeAl2O4 phases in Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was uniform, the relative density was 96.7%, and the Vickers hardness and bending strength were 1.88 GPa and 280.0 MPa, respectively. The wettability between Fe and FeAl2O4 was enhanced with increased sintering temperature. And then the densification process was accelerated. Finally, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe/FeAl2O4 composite were improved.

The aim of this study is to present a novel, lower sintering temperature preparation, processing, structural, mechanical, and tribological testing of the AlN-Al2O3 ceramics. The precursor powder of AlN was subjected to oxidation in ambient environment at 900 °C for 3, 10, and 20 h, respectively. These oxidized powders were characterized by SEM and XRD to reveal their morphology, phase, and crystal structure. The SEM results showed coarse powder particles and the presence of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) phase at the surface of aluminum nitride (AlN). The XRD analysis has shown increasing aluminum-oxy-nitride conversion of aluminum nitride as the holding time of oxidation increased. The highest percentage of conversion of AlN powder to AlN-Al2O3 was observed after 10 h. Simultaneously the powders were compacted and sintered using the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) under inert environment (N2 gas) at 1700 °C, 20 MPa for 5 h. This led to the compaction and increase in density of the final samples. Mechanical tests, such as bending test and tribology tests, were carried out on the samples. The mechanical properties of the samples were observed to improve in the oxidized samples compared to the precursor AlN. Moreover, applying longer oxidation time, the mechanical properties of the sintered samples enhanced significantly. Optimum qualitative (microstructure, oxide percentage) and quantitative (tribology, hardness, and bending tests) properties were observed in samples with 10-h oxidation time.

A mixture of the commercially available cubic silicon powder, hexagonal boron nitride powder and graphite powder was mechanically alloyed to prepare amorphous 2Si-B-3C-N composite powder. The amorphous powder was heated up to 1900°C in nitrogen, with a heating rate of 20°C/min and under a pressure of 80 MPa. Careful investigation was carried out on the densification curve, the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the prepared ceramics. Results show that the amorphous 2Si-B-3C-N powder mainly consists of near-spherical agglomerates, with an average size of 3.5±2.4 micrometers. When the amorphous powder was hot pressed, the densification process mainly included three stages, the denser packing of powder particles with the help of axial pressure, the initial sintering at about 1500-1800°C, and the rapid sintering at temperatures approximately higher than 1830°C. When the 2Si-B-3C-N ceramic was hot pressed at 1900°C for 10-30 mins, it exhibited large volume shrinkage, noticeable reduction of pores, and significantly improvement of density and mechanical properties. The applied high temperature and large pressure may give rise to severe plastic deformation, viscous flow and creep of powder particles, which greatly contribute to the rapid densification of the amorphous 2Si-B-3C-N powder.

This paper gives some insights into the fabrication process of a heterogeneous structured β-metastable type Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn alloy, and the associated mechanical properties optimization of this biocompatible and low elastic modulus material. The powder metallurgy processing route includes both low energy mechanical ball milling (BM) of spherical and pre-alloyed powder particles and their densification by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). It results in a heterogeneous microstructure which is composed of a homogeneous 3D network of β coarse grain regions called “core” and α/β dual phase ultra-fine grain regions called “shell.” However, it is possible to significantly modify the microstructural features of the alloy—including α phase and shell volume fractions—by playing with the main fabrication parameters. A focus on the role of the ball milling time is first presented and discussed. Then, the mechanical behavior via shear tests performed on selected microstructures is described and discussed in relation to the microstructure and the probable underlying deformation mechanism(s).

3Y-TZP powder has been successfully synthesized by gel solid-state method. The structural phases of powder particles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and the morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The average size of grains was 230 nm. The sintering behavior, mechanical properties and microstructure of 3Y-TZP ceramics sintered by this powder were investigated. The experiment results showed that the mechanical properties of ceramics were excellent.

The effect of processing conditions on microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe-Al-Si powders was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nanoindentation. Fe-Al-Si alloy powder was prepared from pure elemental powders by mechanical alloying. Microstructure and mechanical properties of powders were characterized after various durations of mechanical alloying. Special sample preparation technique was developed allowing to characterize the properties of individual powder particles after each step of processing in a planetary ball mill. This step-by-step characterization allowed to find the optimum conditions for subsequent spark plasma sintering.

The surface layer of an obstacle made of U8 steel is investigated after high-speed exposure to a flow of powder particles. After analyzing the frames of high-speed photography, the average velocities of movement of particles of tungsten and titanium carbide powders were determined. It is shown that the shock-wave loading of the barrier material and the effect of particles accelerated by the explosion energy provide a change in the physical and mechanical properties of the surface and the volume of the steel barrier material.
