Background: Skin is the largest organ of the body and helps to regulate several physiological functions. It acts as a barrier that protects the body against UV-radiation, toxic substances, infections, etc. The abnormal growth of the skin cells is called skin cancer. Different types of skin cancer can be classified as Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC); which mainly occur due to chronic exposure to UV- sunlight and pollution. Methods: The conventional topical treatments of skin cancer such as cream, gel, ointment, etc., are more occlusive and thus they do not penetrate deep into the skin (dermal layer) and remain at the upper part of the skin (epidermal layer). The stratum corneum acts as a physiological barrier for the drug-loaded in the conventional formulation. The novel carrier systems have the potential to facilitate the penetration of the drug deep into the skin (dermal layer) because these have less size and higher flexibility than conventional treatment. Conclusion: In the present review, we have discussed various novel carrier systems being investigated for the topical application of chemotherapeutic agents for efficient skin targeting and better dermatological as well as therapeutic benefits with minimal systemic exposure and toxicity.

High living standards and a comfortable modern way of life are related to an increased usage of various plastic products, yielding eventually the generation of an increased amount of plastic debris in the environment. A special concern is on microplastics (MPs), recently classified as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). This review focuses on MPs’ adverse effects on the environment based on their bioactivity. Hence, the main topic covered is MPs’ ecotoxicity on various aquatic (micro)organisms such as bacteria, algae, daphnids, and fish. The cumulative toxic effects caused by MPs and adsorbed organic/inorganic pollutants are presented and critically discussed. Since MPs’ bioactivity, including ecotoxicity, is strongly influenced by their properties (e.g., types, size, shapes), the most common classification of MPs types present in freshwater are provided, along with their main characteristics. The review includes also the sources of MPs discharge in the environment and the currently available characterization methods for monitoring MPs, including identification and quantification, to obtain a broader insight into the complex problem caused by the presence of MPs in the environment.

Concentrations of a range of industrial organic chemicals (xylene, styrene, chlorobenzene and five phthalate esters) have been determined in surface waters near the Humber, Mersey, Tamar, Tees and Tyne estuaries. Analyses were conducted using GC/MS in the multiple ion detection mode. In general, the highest concentrations (in the ng to µg dm−3 range) for all determinands were found at sites within the estuaries. Selected samples were also analysed by scanning GC/MS and other compounds tentatively identified. There was only minor overlap between the compounds found at each of the estuaries, presumably a reflection of the industrial activities in the area. A preliminary ecotoxicological assessment was made of both datasets.

We consider the problem of drug diffusion in the dermal layer of human body. Two existing mathematical models of the drug diffusion problem are recalled. We obtain that the existing models lead to inconsistent equations for the steady state condition. We also obtain that solutions to the existing models are unrealistic for some cases of the unsteady state condition, because negative drug concentrations occur due to the inappropriate assumption of the model. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a modified mathematical model, so that the model is consistent, and the solution is nonnegative for both steady and unsteady state conditions of the drug diffusion problem in the dermal layer of human body. For the steady state condition, the exact solution to the proposed model is given. For unsteady state condition, we use a finite difference method for solving the models numerically, where the discretisation is centred in space and forward in time. Simulation results confirm that our proposed model and method preserve the non-negativity of the solution to the problem, so the solution is more realistic than that of the old model.
