The soybean rust caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi is considered the main soybean disease and consequently the appropriate selection and the use of spraying equipment are vital for its control. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of aerial application equipment for soybean rust control. It was used: Micronair AU 5000 at 10 L ha-1 (with oil) and at 20 L ha-1 (without oil); Stol ARD atomizer at 10 and 20 L ha-1 (both with oil) and Spectrum (electrostatic) at 10 L ha-1 (without oil). The adjuvant was cotton oil (1.0 L ha-1) with emulsifier (BR 455) at 0.025 L ha-1. The field trial was set up at the 3rd fungicide application, when f four replications of each treatment. There were no statistical differences among treatments related to fungicide deposits by at a Confidence Interval of 95%. It was observed that the best results were obtained with Micronair (10 L ha-1 with oil), Stol (20 L ha-1 with oil) and electrostatic system at 10 L ha-1 with the lowest relative humidity (64%).

This study focused on designing a training kit for learning design of experiment (DoE). A model has been established to provide a platform and facilities to conduct design of experiment. A system of ball rolling on a designated track has been made to fulfill this objective. Several factors could be set up to conduct real experiments repetitively. To verify the feasibility of this training kit, four different kind of experiments have been used to test the reliability of the factors levels and their response quality characteristics. Taguchi L8 and L9 matrices are used to find the optimum response time for a ball to complete the full travelling cycle, with quality objective of smaller the better, the conducted experiments achieved some results between Taguchi and Factorial designs that were used to confirm the experiments. The corresponded travelling time for Taguchi experiment and experimental solution of 24 factorial designs are 11.25 s and 11.43 s respectively, both falls within 90% confidence interval.

Objective This study aimed to use real-time safety audits to establish whether preparation of the equipment required for the stabilization and resuscitation of newborns in the delivery room areas is adequate. Study Design This was a descriptive, multicenter study performed at five-level III-A neonatal units in Madrid, Spain. For 1 year, one researcher from each center performed random real-time safety audits (RRTSAs), on different days and during different shifts, of at least three neonatal stabilization areas, either in the delivery room or in the operating room used for caesarean sections. Three factors in each area were reviewed: the set-up of the radiant warmer, the materials, and medication available. The global audit was considered without defect when no errors were detected in any of the audited factors. Possible differences in the results were analyzed as a function of the study month, day of the week, or shift during which the audit had been performed. Results A total of 852 audits were performed. No defects were detected in any of the three factors analyzed in the 534 (62.7%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 59.3–65.9) cases. Slight defects were detected in 98 (11.5%, 95% CI: 9.4–13.8) cases and serious defects capable of producing adverse events in the newborn during resuscitation were found in 220 (25.8%, 95% CI: 22.9–28.9) cases. No statistically significant differences in the results were found according to the day of the week or time during which the audits were performed. However, the percentage of RRTSAs without defect increased as the study period progressed (first quarter 38.1% vs. the last quarter 84.2%; p < 0.001). Conclusion The percentage of adequately prepared resuscitation areas was low. RRTSAs made it possible to detect errors in the correct availability of the neonatal stabilization areas and improved their preparation by preventing errors from being perpetuated over time. ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine the required sample size for estimation of the Pearson coefficient of correlation between cherry tomato variables. Two uniformity tests were set up in a protected environment in the spring/summer of 2014. The observed variables in each plant were mean fruit length, mean fruit width, mean fruit weight, number of bunches, number of fruits per bunch, number of fruits, and total weight of fruits, with calculation of the Pearson correlation matrix between them. Sixty eight sample sizes were planned for one greenhouse and 48 for another, with the initial sample size of 10 plants, and the others were obtained by adding five plants. For each planned sample size, 3000 estimates of the Pearson correlation coefficient were obtained through bootstrap re-samplings with replacement. The sample size for each correlation coefficient was determined when the 95% confidence interval amplitude value was less than or equal to 0.4. Obtaining estimates of the Pearson correlation coefficient with high precision is difficult for parameters with a weak linear relation. Accordingly, a larger sample size is necessary to estimate them. Linear relations involving variables dealing with size and number of fruits per plant have less precision. To estimate the coefficient of correlation between productivity variables of cherry tomato, with a confidence interval of 95% equal to 0.4, it is necessary to sample 275 plants in a 250m² greenhouse, and 200 plants in a 200m² greenhouse.

SummaryThe effect on the bleeding time of heparin, followed by an infusion with desmopressin (DDAVP) 0.3 Μg/kg or placebo in a randomized, double-blind set-up, was investigated in 20 patients treated for acute venous thromboembolism. The bleeding time was on the average prolonged by 90% (95% confidence interval 46% -134%) after at least 1 day of treatment with heparin. At that point DDAVP shortened the bleeding time by 23% with a confidence interval of −35% to −11% whereas the effect of placebo was −2% with a confidence interval of −23% to +20%. There was also a shortening of the APTT after DDAVP but not after placebo. It is concluded that DDAVP induces a partial reversal of the effect of heparin on the bleeding time, and that DDAVP should be tried in case of hemorrhagic problems.

Three techniques were incorporated for drying clay-rich specimens: air-drying, freeze-drying and critical point drying. In air-drying, the specimens were set out for several days to dry or were placed in an oven (80°F) for several hours. The freeze-dried specimens were frozen by immersion in liquid nitrogen or in isopentane at near liquid nitrogen temperature and then were immediately placed in the freeze-dry vacuum chamber. The critical point specimens were molded in agar immediately after sampling. When the agar had set up the dehydration series, water-alcohol-amyl acetate-CO2 was carried out. The objectives were to compare the fabric plasmas (clays and precipitates), fabricskeletons (quartz grains) and the relationship between them for each drying technique. The three drying methods are not only applicable to the study of treated soils, but can be incorporated into all SEM clay soil studies.

Freeze-etching electron microscopy is currently one of the best methods for studying molecular organization of biological materials. Its application, however, is still limited by our imprecise knowledge about the perturbations of the original organization which may occur during quenching and fracturing of the samples and during the replication of fractured surfaces. Although it is well known that the preservation of the molecular organization of biological materials is critically dependent on the rate of freezing of the samples, little information is presently available concerning the nature and the extent of freezing-rate dependent perturbations of the original organizations. In order to obtain this information, we have developed a method based on the comparison of x-ray diffraction patterns of samples before and after freezing, prior to fracturing and replication.Our experimental set-up is shown in Fig. 1. The sample to be quenched is placed on its holder which is then mounted on a small metal holder (O) fixed on a glass capillary (p), whose position is controlled by a micromanipulator.

Groups of 12 fathead minnows were exposed for 129 days to Lake Superior water acidified (pH 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 or 6.5) with reagent grade H2SO4 by means of a multichannel toxicant system for flow-through bioassays. Untreated water (pH 7.5) had the following properties: hardness 45.3 ± 0.3 (95% confidence interval) mg/1 as CaCO3; alkalinity 42.6 ± 0.2 mg/1; Cl- 0.03 meq/1; Na+ 0.05 meq/1; K+ 0.01 meq/1; Ca2+ 0.68 meq/1; Mg2+ 0.26 meq/1; dissolved O2 5.8 ± 0.3 mg/1; free CO2 3.2 ± 0.4 mg/1; T= 24.3 ± 0.1°C. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd gills were subsequently processed for LM (methacrylate), TEM and SEM respectively.Three changes involving chloride cells were correlated with increasing acidity: 1) the appearance of apical pits (figs. 2,5 as compared to figs. 1, 3,4) in chloride cells (about 22% of the chloride cells had pits at pH 5.0); 2) increases in their numbers and 3) increases in the % of these cells in the epithelium of the secondary lamellae.

It is well known that a standing electron wavefield can be set up in a crystal such that its intensity peaks at the atomic sites or between the sites or in the case of more complex crystal, at one or another type of a site. The effect is usually referred to as channelling but this term is not entirely appropriate; by analogy with the more established particle channelling, electrons would have to be described as channelling either through the channels or through the channel walls, depending on the diffraction conditions.

High-resolution images of the surface topography of solid specimens can be obtained using the low-loss technique of Wells. If the specimen is placed inside a lens of the condenser/objective type, then it has been shown that the lens itself can be used to collect and filter the low-loss electrons. Since the probeforming lenses in TEM instruments fitted with scanning attachments are of this type, low-loss imaging should be possible.High-resolution, low-loss images have been obtained in a JEOL JEM 100B fitted with a scanning attachment and a thermal, fieldemission gun. No modifications were made to the instrument, but a wedge-shaped, specimen holder was made to fit the side-entry, goniometer stage. Thus the specimen is oriented initially at a glancing angle of about 30° to the beam direction. The instrument is set up in the conventional manner for STEM operation with all the lenses, including the projector, excited.
